I'm so glad you've posted this. I'm into collecting mainly Lepidoptera but I have a box for pretty much every other family. As far as I'm aware, this is pretty much the only video on KZbin that explicitly shows the raw details of a professional collector collecting lepidoptera and I think it is an absolute masterpiece. Some good examples of other collectors on youtube are "The Daily Entomologist" and "Troy Wells", but by far the specific video is my favorite. Also, I have always been wanting to catch a sonoran blue since the first time I have seen this video, and when I found out you guys were collecting in Los Angeles County, I was optimistic. After doing some research and looking for the location from hints in the video, I found out I live only about 45 minutes from the general area you guys were collecting from, which is just insane. So, I'll definitely try to head up there and see what I can find in late february/early march of 2022. It's sad to see you stop posting, but anyways, THANKS for sharing. :)

THANK you for sharing and good on you. I'm amazed Lycaenidae (or any Leps) are out and about in February, even in Southern California. I'm live Downunder (Brisbane) -- whilst collecting is still permitted here it is almost impossible to do so unless you own a farm or have private property. Collecting is losing popularity. The amount of serious collectors here are very few. Pity because there are still un-described species in rural Australia. The irony is if an entomologist is seen and reported they will be arrested/ prosecuted and at the same time real-estate developers are clearing thousands of acres of virgin coastal forests and nobody blinks an eyelid at that. As for all the haters they should realize collecting a handful of adult insects does not upset the species in any way whatsoever.

Does anyone know if bug collectors kill them or just take care of them until they pass away? It’s nice that they seemed to take care of them here and had them lay eggs

The insects are killed to collect them. In this case it is for a scientific collection and the informations can be used to protect the species.

Some are killed as specimens for collection and study but is this case the let the females lay eggs so they can raise them either to study of release to assist in repopulating.

I don't have the heart to kill them I would rather capture them with photos.

taking a picture is good, but theres something different with collecting it. they do studies after collecting and its better to have the specimen. also, they dont live that long (about 2 weeks) and easily preproduce

I hate butterfly collecting. If you’re not planning to eat them, just take a photo or something. Don’t kill them just to hang their corpse up as a decoration.

I agree, there is no need to collect any life forms just for decoration or entertainment, it is much better to enjoy them flying and take photos instead! However, there are entomologists who are collecting for scientific/research purposes which provides important data that cannot be achieved by photographs. But everything must be done in a sustainable way 🙏🏻🌍🌿☘️
