I'm the 2nd collector. I grew up in a time where video games were physical, box PC games, cartridges, discs. I love to discover games & try out new games seeing if I like them or not. The ones I do I keep & plan on sharing with others (when my time comes/if I can't play them anymore). I don't need any figures, or other items, I just want the games. I also collect Switch & PS4 games, trying new games on Switch & if I like them (& they have a PS4 version), I'll post gameplays of the PS4 version on my channel. I used to collect & use strategy guides. I don't anymore, but it was fun. I even got one for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 from Half Price Books, & someone left some pages of story, possibly a fan fiction, in it. It was the strangest thing. I always thought the people who ran that store would check every page of the guides to make sure nothing like that would happen & that it wasn't dirty or torn up.

I’ve been collecting for about 10 years. I’m all about the game being in pristine shape and complete, manuals box and in near mint shape. I do have a few games I’ve paid a lot of money for that are quite rare and sealed. People must also be aware that there are a lot of scams and re-prints across all the platforms. Nintendo DS is infamous for this and there’s a lot of fake cartridges on the market. PS2 and PS3 also had a lot of reprints done for them…. making them not as valuable as the originals. Mine is strictly an investment to sell anymore…. and that day is coming very soon because I don’t purchase games of late at all anymore. I pray your eye problems clear up soon. Take care and I enjoyed your video.

A good way to get into collecting in this current age is first testing the waters with your interest. More specifically, purchase a the digital copy on sale of a game you are interested in, but not quite sure you want to collect. If you enjoy your experience with said game, then go ahead with the purchase of a physical copy. If it is a series/franchise, do essentially the same thing. But by that point, if you have already done what I suggested, then you will likely know if you are willing to invest however much money into said line of games in the series/franchise. This method of caution allowed me in the recent decade to determine where my collecting priorities take precedent.

Such a nice video to find! It is certainly a harder hobby than most assume. I have spent many a days searching or trying to find certain items only to never come to pass either because of price or my location. I really am missing a network of fellow collectors, it sounds like this would be a big boon. If anyone is in the Chicagoland area we should connect! I have gone through many a collection phases and have settled on video games. I have a collection of Amiibo figurines that I have moved on from.

I love your collector classifications. I’ve always had a hard time classifying myself as a collector because I sometimes compare myself to people who go to conventions and snatch up a plethora of valuable games or who go for complete collections of a particular console. Personally I like to curate games for myself that I absolutely love or are part of a series I enjoy, or games I read about that sound like something I’d like to play. For example, I’m a newcomer to JRPGs and in 2019, I went to a convention and picked up a whole bunch of classic JRPGs that sounded interesting. I’m slowly working through them and I’m glad I picked them up at the time because some of them are too rich for me at this point. Haha! Side note, I thought that Cyri figure looked like you (I’m viewing this video on my phone) and didn’t realize it was Cyri until you highlighted it. I’m looking forward to more videos in this series. I hope you are doing well.

As someone who has gotten into game collecting and has become a part of game collecting communities, I feel like I've come to understand why the appeal exists. There's just the joy about realising that all these games you've been interested in for years that you thought you'd never experience first-hand are closer than they seem. I always tremendously enjoy your videos, especially the ones about collecting! I mainly collect Xbox games/merch as well as all things Star Trek related but I also still have all of my old Nintendo consoles and games from my childhood. Collecting in general is a great hobby, I definitely enjoy all of my stuff. 😄 Also, I debate with friends all the time about the pros of physical copies, I have one particular friend that doesn’t except that I buy games on disc when available, she’s hellbent on digital content and Ubisoft’s recent moves to remove whole games from stores have proven me right. If you get a physical copy you actually own it, it’s not infallible of course but still superior in many ways I think. I use the game pass a lot on both pc and Xbox but that’s a subscription service, so that’s different but I think if you buy 60€ for a game digitally and there’s a chance it will be completely unplayable one day, that’s really bad.

I just think it's great to see people of all ages enjoy video games. I have personally collected so much over the years. It all started with a Nintendo Entertainment System and I played with my parents and siblings, afterwards the system kinda became my own and I collected so much for it. With older games going up in prices I found out it is not as pricey to collect japanese games and one of the things I just love about collecting them is all the art printed in manuals and box art. I got almost all Dragon Quest games and the cover art for each box are just magical. Same can be said about Final Fantasy, the seventh game in the series is what made me love JRPGs.

Recently I've really wanted to start collecting for the Nintendo DS/3DS and PS2. I think what halts me in my tracks is that I don't know where to start. I still have my collection from when I was a teenager/young adult and the games I've been able to find that always interested me and I couldn't get my hands on at the time (like Corpse Party and Fatal Frame games), so I have my "favorites" for the most part. Anything I'd be collecting moving forward I would also be experiencing for the first time, which makes choosing a starting point difficult, especially with a system like the (3)DS that has so many titles I find it hard to research. This video really helped me get some confidence! I think collecting my genre is a very good tactic. I am a big horror fan but also love cute casual games like Cooking Mama. And of course since I've started following you, I've gotten interested in JRPGs in a way I haven't been since FF10. Also I ADORE strategy guides and might start keeping an eye out for those, as well. In the future of this series I would really love to hear suggestions for websites that are good for researching games, which it sounds like you are already planning to get to. Obviously you can find list after list on wikipedia, but scrolling through a ton of titles where a big portion are not so great "shovel-ware" like the (3)DS had can make one feel like their eyes will glaze over, and sometimes I feel like I might be missing some great gems because the title doesn't conjure an idea of what the game may be. I know I got to this video a bit late (I've been in the process of moving for the last month) but I'm so excited to watch these videos!
@Food4Dogs2 жыл бұрын
Hi Marie, thank you, and I'm glad you found my video helpful. I'm sorry I haven't so far got around to doing any more in the series (due to some protracted health issue), but I really want to carry on. Websites for researching games ... that's a difficult one. As you say, many are huge lists which are important for *reference*, but not so good for the practical side of collecting. I would say the most helpful medium is probably ... KZbin! Yea, sounds weird, but there are really good collectors out there who are serious about what they do and present thoughtful info and personal insights. For example, SuperDerek RPG is a great collector and presenter (probably not exactly the specific area in games you're looking for, but always worth checking his reviews for his Game Collection). Another one is Pete Dorr - I always learn a lot from watching him talk about games. I think you've made already a great decision narrowing down your collecting by genre/type of games and platforms. The rest is often ... just following your nose. 😎 Not being afraid to take the plunge. Being a collector means learning to live with 'bad' decisions. Which might, in years to come, turn out not so "bad" after all! Good luck!

Nice, I'm looking forward to watching this series! Not really something for the beginning collector, but one important thing I've had to do throughout my years of collecting is periodically reassess and cull my collection as needed. Sometimes you will find bulk lots that are good deals but come with extra games you might not necessarily be as interested in or sometimes you just find that you lose interest in having some games in the collection over the course of however many years. It can be a tough thought to let games go from your collection, but I think it helps keep that library of games cleaner and more tailored exactly to the individual that it belongs to. Plus you can recoup some of the costs to add more important games in the future.
@Food4Dogs2 жыл бұрын

Due to low budget I started my collection with my favourite series: Pokemon, nearly 6 years ago. I've usually bought used copies, sometimes just cardridges, cause I love these games so much I just wanted to play everything which appeared on the main series. But I just could afford a game from time to time, if my paycheck allowed me to. Now I'm older, I have better job, more consoles and my collection is growing, but still these cardriges in little special box are my most beloved treasures 😊

Oh, that is a story I can relate to so much! I also started collecting Pokémon games from the DS and 3DS era, from about 9 years ago. I also bought pre-owned, and also clearance deals in shops. That was a lovely video! As a slight addition, I would also add looking into how to take care of ones collection. This is especially important for older products such as the Gameboy/DS line of products. Whether it's older game cartridges, plush toys or figures that have seen a few years of dust, or even strategy guides who's pages might be starting to yellow with age. Taking care of one's collection can remind oneself of the journey they've been on in collecting said collection, and make one think of the next piece to add to the hoard!

Amazing introduction! I’m a bit late to it (been on a true crime binge). Definitely have come close to the fomo as well, it’s certainly a thing that heightens with social media.

Watching this was a delight, but the part on strategy guides hit me extra hard. I happen to love guides like this, and honestly I think my start for love of these came from the old SNES game, Earthbound. It came with the guide when it released in stores and it was wonderfully colorful, with "fake" news paper articles and travel guides. The fandom made a guide in the same vein for Mother 3. Thank you for not only the video, but for getting me to revisit those wonderful memories

Have you been able to get a PS5 yet or is that a system that isn't on the table to buy? Another amazing share of the growth of your collection. Have a wonderful time until the next time we see you! Almost done binging your videos. Haha.

Omg sorry it's off topic but I just noticed the watchmen comic in the background!! Didn't know you're a fan (I hope you're a fan at least!) I don't think I qualify as a collector but if I ever do, I'm sure I'll be the beach-comb collector you described after the investment collector! Looking forward to the rest of this series

I'm utterly thrilled to see you start this series. Given how passionate you are about the topic, I'm positive that even non-collectors like myself will be as captivated as I already am. I'm personally excited to learn about it regardless, even if I never put it to use myself! Thank you for sharing your wisdom and excitement, as always, Miss Britta ❤

yes to the FOMO. i struggle to keep myself in check. i'm not really a collector, i just buy games to play them BUT... i get heavily discouraged whenever i purchase a game and find that it's not the entire package, and now i have to sift through 900+ different dlc's ( looking at you koei tecmo ). so, i already know that if i decide to start an actual collection, i'd go insane from all of the little stuff. i will go and buy little plushes and stuff of my favorite games though!

this is absolutely incredible, i've been a subscriber since you've only had around 700 subscribers with one of your first viral videos, and to now see that you've literally grown to having exactly a QUARTER OF A MILLION subscribers!!!! Like congratulations!!!! you have done what the majority of youtubers have not been able to do, which is growing your channel past 100k subs, which only the very small minority manage to actually accomplish!! you've found your niche, and you now have a very powerful "voice" as your reach/influence is quite large, i'm so excited to see what you'll be doing with such a large audience, you've been so inspiring to see grow as you upload each new video and seeing you reach all these milestones in subscribers and view count!! i really hope that you've come to realize how amazing all of this is, and hope that you'll be able to take advantage of these oppertunities because there are so many things you can do now and also the support from you hundreds of thousands of subscribers!! consider monitizing your channel even further with options like patreon and other outlets to recieve donations and those types of things, because us, your fans, will gladly support you!!! that'll be extra money to purcahse even more awesome games, being able to get systems, rare/limited editions that youv'e always dreamed of, and also rare games that you've always wanted!! also just any crazy awesome things that you'd love to have haha. this is WAY better than someone like you collecting boring things like coins, stamps, etc, you being able to find the treasure trove that is game collecting is so much more fulfilling (getting to experience experiences in story with each game is a gift like watching movies and reading books, people that choose to collect stamps and little action figures miss out big time lol) anyways, just wanted to leave my comment of support and appreciation as i am excited to see where you'll go from here =)

Thank you Dom, especially for being around since the "tiny channel" days - I do appreciate the support. I shall carry on doing exactly what I have always done. 😊 My channel is not monetized and that will remain so. It's about the enjoyment that gaming brings us. I very very occasionally accept a special item/collectible from trusted sources, where I feel it will fit into my video approach; that's all.

I can’t wait for the next video in this series. What’s stopping me from collecting more is space. But I have a bit of a collection from just buying games as a hobby.
@Food4Dogs2 жыл бұрын
Space is indeed a huge issue - I'm now coming up against that. It was something I had never thought about when I started collecting! Maybe something I should mention in a future video. 😃 The bad news is: I have now had 3 video shoots for a new Collecting video (PS3) .. and ... frustratingly, they all turned out not what I had hoped and I decided to can them. 😒 I'll have one more go, please keep fingers crossed! Thank you for your patience.

The first video game I ever played was an arcade version of Pong when I was ten and on holiday in Spain with my mum & dad. Then came Space Invaders. I've been into gaming ever since. I'm not a collector by any means but I still have my old Sega Mega Drive and PS1 and all the games dumped in my loft. My fave games were Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid. I've comm'd to you before Foodie that I just play Star Trek Online now. Be happy. Stay happy. 😄

That was a great video! Personally, I've such an ambivalent feeling about my collection. Sometimes I feel ashamed of the money I spent on all of those games, but they do bring me joy just to look at them. I don't have a huge collection with rare things or anything like that. Just a compilation of games I want to play that I haven't got around to them yet. It's a very odd reunion of titles really. I even have some "trash" GBC games that really remind me of my childhood. My biggest one must be the DS/3ds. this year I'm slowing down on buying new games. I'm trying to finish some of the ones I already have before getting a new addition, but it's difficult. Some sales are hard to resist and some new games are definitely day one purchases like Xenoblade 3. I've also a growing online collection with an external drive for the ps4 and some SD cards for the switch and 3ds. They came with a constant fear that someday I might want to play one of them but they'll not work.
