I spent a lot of time in China 20 years ago when there was open conversations that China could never catch up with western car makers on ICE so they would focus on electric and push that as their access to the export market. They also planned that if they owned all the battery value chain like lithium and graphite processing - European manufacturers would always be beholden to them if they tried to go electric. Bottom line, this capture of the car market was mapped out decades ago and without the EU reversing its “emissions’ regulations - the battle has been won already.

I have also worked in China for VAG, much like the Chinese housing market collapse being self inflicted by uncontrolled expansion. The car market in china is the same, the actual Chinese EV production numbers are not higher over the past 5 years, no one in China is buying them either, 7% last time I looked. They are exporting them as there is no demand locally either. Yes the EU have over stepped their target and strangled their own market, but China has no response if the UK/Europeans say it has to be built locally as there is no way that China can deal with outside competitors without state manipulation. You can see it with many other areas within China of the proverbial 3 men digging a ditch and 2 men are filling it in, so 5 men are working! If you think this is the start of something big why not buy Polestar shares at the moment?

I agree with Chris, the W124 Mercedes is the best looking Mercedes ever. I had the 300E and loved every minute of it and the 100k miles we did together. It was my forever car and put into storage, where my father in-law had a fire in his workshop and burnt it to the ground. One day I will find another and yes the 500E would be a dream. I must start looking ! .

I listened to this on headphones whilst cleaning my Model Y after a 1000 mile Scotland road trip 😂. They’re actually really good cars to drive. I see Richard Porter from EVO has just leased one and in the same magazine there’s an article about Jez Coates who also runs one. We’re still petrol heads - not just people who want to get from A to B 😅…..in fact my other vehicles are a V8 Mustang and 3 bikes including one for the track, but sometimes electric is perfect. Wafting silently around those peaceful Scottish roads with 400hp and loads of torque is a great driving experience, just a different one from bouncing a V8 sound attack around the mountains!

2 car garage: You have finally reached the dizzy heights of Formula 1, 1 of your cars must be from the team's engine/chassis supplier's current range (you choose the team), your 2nd car can be anything you like as long as there's some link to the team, budget is unlimited. Have at it!

At risk of getting lynched, I'm pro my model 3. It suits my use case for it, warm each morning and unlike my last c63 that spent 97% of it's time changing gear. Modern turbo auto awd cars just don't float my boat as they've been ruined by emissions. Weekend drives are for my GT4, Caterham or M3. However for many EV just don't work, but less than most claim.

Same - I love my Model Y. Most people that actually drive them think the same. Richard Porter from EVO has just bought one and he was surprised by how well they drive. As a daily, and if you can charge at home, they are unbeatable, but still love my Mustang and bikes for the weekend 👍

I haven't driven the Teslas, but I bet the are amazing to drive. I got to drive an early proto from another company a few years ago for a week, and the EV aspects were super cool. One of the things we hear a lot now (aside from access to charging points) is that these cars will face very large battery replacement expenses and that they will have almost no resale value. I am not arguing those points, just saying it is something "we hear/read". Are these legit concerns?

I suggest Neil and Chris to come in Italy and do the Stella Alpina Historic Rally. They have a non-competitive class as well. This year is in September to avoid the massive traffic you have in the mountain passes during summer. It takes place around the Dolomites. The entry fee it's relatively affordable compared to other events (around 1500 euros). They just opened bookings. It's a very laid back race as there is time to eat in the various locations around the course. The places are amazing and most of the time you get access to the pedestrian areas in these small mountain villages. It's beautiful.

Hi Giovanni - thanks for this interesting comment. What vehicle are they driving? Is the event providing cars? Driving through Italy is wonderful - try doing it with an F1 World Champion as I did (we were guests of Ferrari). I encourage everyone to visit Italy - so beautiful and such a rich culture.

@@eastbaystreet1242 Hello! Look for Stella Alpina Storica 2024 on google. It’s the 39 edition this year. The categories are: Legend for cars built up to 1955 Celebration up to 1974. There is anything from 1920 Bugattis to 1939 Fiat Balilla , plenty of Porsche 356 for the official Porsche Classics. This year if from 6 to 8 September

I get what Chris is saying about the latest F1 cars being mighty now and rose tinted spectacles but 20 years ago the cars moved around more in the corner due to less downforce which if comparing I think was more exciting and a greater spectacle. Thinking maggots/becketts.

Go even further back, before F1 had wings, then the drivers were real racers. Your balls were the only thing regulating corner speed, not levels of downforce. Wingless F1 for the future.

I’ve listened to every single collecting addicts podcast, but never actually watched their heads on KZbin. Everyone knows what Mr Harris looks like; and I’m pleased to say everyone else looks pretty much like they sound (although querying Mr Clifford’s headgear). In terms of the battle of the popular vehicles being won by electricity mobiles, I think they should just be in a separate category called “devices”. That sorts everything out so we can focus on cars separately.

They should mention next week that the Alpina B5/D5 is no longer in production, and who knows if BMW will do another. And the BMW 520d is no longer on sale in the U.K. If you look at what Rivian released with the R2 and R3, some old car companies look like they’ve been half-asleep. Musk uses his private jet nearly as much as most people use a car.

Idea for 2 car garage, combining themes discussed before. As a man from a certain age that also collected car brochures, worked out how long it would take to buy a 1980's BMW 323i with pocket money when aged about 11 or 12 and an avid collector of the original Top Trumps. Choose a 2 car garage from Top Trumps, first Super Cars and second Sports Cars, no budget, just the cars you lusted after back in the day and pick a song from the year of manufacture of one of them. More cheese vs. service station please.. Keep up the great work really enjoy the podcasts and leads me down countless avenues of cars I might but probably never will buy.

Two car garage: You live in the center of a large metropolitan city. You’ve done very well for yourself and are interested in cars but you have one problem: you have only one parking space. Your loft, however, is many, many square feet and can handle many things. You have 350k GBP to purchase two vehicles. One will be your everything, daily runabout. The other will be drained of its fluids and craned into your living area where it will live as an art installation. What do you choose?

Protectionism is needed if the other side is competing unfairly. Tasla, in its initial life, was also benefitting greatly financially from governemt money, though, to be fair they have been working tirelessly to offer the product as cheaply as possible. Germans and most other automakers have been moving in the premium segment over the last decade or two, obscured by profit margins, low interest rates, and consumers, which in that environmant were willling to pay more and more for fancy extras and premium branding. Now, the reality is kicking in, and many Europeans are starting to find out that in the new economy, they are not that wealthy anymore, and a large part of the economic/industrial capacity has been outsourced to counties far away for a quick short term profits.

2 car garage: You’re a Formula 1 driver smashing the competion at a rate of half a minute per race on your way to your 4th consecutive driver’s title. The only trouble is you’re doing that for a team that can’t provide you with a company car from their own portofolio because they don’t build roadcars. You’re going to be spending your own money on two cars, one would have to be a fast two seater for having a blast on the road and the other one would have to be a family car capable of towing the motorhome in which you have your SIM racer built in. Both cars need to come from brands that have no connection with any of the rivaling F1 teams. Budget is unlimited, of course.

I greatly appreciate your weekly episodes. Can’t wait for them. But, dare you discuss the heavy handed attitude of (shall we say) Goodwood towards long standing members. My brother has been a member, for decades, I believe and he regularly attends all events. The FOS now no longer gives tickets to members as part of membership. The member suit doesn’t allow members in unless they pay, a lot. And they have increased the fees. Who gets away by reducing their product offer and increases the prices, without respecting loyal customers. I was saddened to hear my brother had cancelled his membership. As a regular breakfast attendee, I.e. every one. He feels SO let down. I don’t even they said thank you and goodbye. So sad. David, Cheshire

Ferrari kept the right driver. If you look at the race pace (Not to mention the best qualifier on the grid right now), especially last year, it's pretty clear Leclerc was faster. In Bahrain, he was dealing with a 100-degree brake temp imbalance. Every time Carlos beats him, It's probably because of an Issue/strategy/penalty in Leclerc's side of the garage. When he gets a fast car, everyone will get to know how fast he is (remember the 2022 first half?). Don't get me wrong Carlos is a fast driver, but not quite on Leclerc's level. And Ferrari aren't stupid, they have the data.

2 car garage: you’re in your mid thirties and looking for 2 cars for your garage. One should be a sporty GT car, one that can whisk you on your annual holiday to the alps - but not fall off a mountain when you show it a bend. The other should be suitable for everything from a run to the shops, to camping with the wider family- it would preferably be 4WD as you’ve now moved out of London and into the country. One of the cars must be from a British brand, and your budget is 80k. HOWEVER, since you’re big into supporting anything British, you can unlock an additional 20k if BOTH cars are British.

@kylem324
@kylem324 10 ай бұрын
It was different in some respects. As you pointed out. They had two drivers that could win any given weekend. But more significant to this was that other teams did win races. There were also teams with cars that were as fast, or marginally faster, but couldn’t thread the needle over a season due to reliability, strategy mess ups, dubious engineering, and team errors. Merc had a great streak of reliability, and were comparatively faultless in their strategy and team ops. Ferrari in 2017 and 2019. RedBull in 2021. Each had cars that were as fast, or faster. The distinction was that neither could execute over a season to win the WCC.

2014-2020 Mercedes where always 1-2 and NO ONE. Could touch them cause they had the fastest engine with 100hp+ more than everyone . Not much to do with reliability.. and now we have only 1 driver who is a class on its own. In 2014-2020 it’s was Mercedes … and the rest . So people need to stop saying it’s the car , it’s Verstappen . Look at 2023 Verstappen had double the points than Perez ..

I am by no means an Elon Musk hater, but I had to smile a little at how Chris Cooper has really bought into the Elon Musk cult of personality; Elon has never started a company himself or invented anything. Tesla was losing thousands per car, but were subsidised by the American government because it was decided we HAD to go to electric and so Tesla HAD to be a success. It was not allowed to fail. He's an American Oligarch. The Mars talk and launching cars into space is all PR frill. Space X make tools of war, and recently signed the biggest ever contract with the American military to transport "equipment" around the world. Their 'Blackjack' satellites are currently being used to target Ukrainian missiles and drones on Russian positions... That is their main business. As I say; I'm not a Musk hater (other than his manipulation of the crypto market), the guy is an incredible success and has become a cultural icon. I also respect that he mostly just speaks his mind, against the narrative, at times creating powerful enemies. Good for him, but we do need to see beyond the PR at times.

"Nobody cares about new vehicles, they just want it to work." This is why Japanese cars took over the low end of the market. It's why Nissan sold so may low-quality cars filled with toys. Normal people want 1. cheap, 2. gadgets, 3. fuel economy, 4. reliability, 5. Warranty. Everything else is immaterial.

What use is a Chinese electric car if it is unrepairable. I have a friend with a DS3 which has been off the road more than on and I know from a friend at Direct Line that they will refuse to offer extended warranties for electric MGs. £30K only looks good value if the vehicle lasts and retains value. Manesh is right, ICE cars will continue to be built for the developing world and they will be available here regardless of what European manufacturers choose, or are forced by legistlation, to do.
