As gifted and experienced an auto reporter as Chris is, you’d think he would be showing off his garage filled with million dollar cars. But a Delta 8v is all he needs to have a great time. That’s why I love these videos…as Harry Metcalf says, “it’s all about the driving.”

I've never understood why people fill a garage with exotic cars but never use them other than to look at in theirgarage? Each to there own, if that's what they want to do, but we never get to see them being driven, which surely is the point of having exotic cars? To be seen in. As you say, Harry and Chris drive the cars they have.

@@GB-vn1tf A lot of people have a collection of something. the difference is in what you can afford to collect. If you had the financial ability to buy your favourite cars, you would. Then you will quickly end up in the same predicament. Yes Chris and Harry drive some of their cars. At the same time they have cars sitting for a while for multiple reason.

Lol. That'll be Harry Metcalfe the badge snob, who spends all his time these days in ridiculously expensive cars that no one can afford or use. He sold his yellow evo Delta because it squeeked and rattled too much. Chris hates 'garage queens' like most true enthusiasts.

Well done Chris. I had a Black F Reg 8v Integrale for 3yrs in 1998. It was around 5k then & loved it. Would love to have another, but also get worried about rust issues etc, as can be expensive to sort. So, love what you're doing about just driving it & not concerned that it's not a show car etc, life is short, but I do think this mindset is also helped by available money you obviously have, that can give a more blasse attitude with cars. For people where 15k is a more noticeable amount to spend, then it's harder for them to not worry about it. Still great video, & good job in getting out there & using it, would love to see more videos on this car please.

Thanks for this Chris, I bought my first Delta 1300lx when I was 18, breathed on with loads of HF turbo bits. I took a job I really didn't want so I could afford and 8v integrale, which I really wanted. After a highlift cam, BWE chip and boost controller it was very quick. Presently restoring my old evo2 which I daily drove until it died. We have more cars now but the integrale has its own room in the house and I just love it but it will not only be a garage queen, but also a piece of art to look from my Scottish room drinking alcohol only going out for dry days and pampering. Yes its bad but I've wasted so much money daily driving them. The bonnet is not 16v, as with the wheels, they were standard spec on the 8v Cat so please leave them both alone.

I nearly bought a ‘grale years ago, right up to the point where I drove an Elise on an experience day (never, admittedly having driven a ‘grale). Still have the Elise (sport 160), I do wonder if I would still have the lancia if I’d have bought it instead due to the running costs, but they are still a beautiful, evocative machine. Would have been worth about double what my Elise is currently worth now too (I was looking at evo 1’s…). Need a lottery win and then I can add one to the stable

I had an EVO 2 until recently. One of the garage queen models, as CH refers to. I sold it cos I was afraid to drive it, it was worth so much. And so much more than I paid for it. It got to the point where I thought every single mile I put on it would devalue it. Crazy, I know.

I know that feeling. Owning a classic from the 90s and people are calling me crazy because I actually drive it even during the winter and use it as my daily. Yes, it will rust and I will have to fix it, yes it will loose its low mileage status but boo hoo, it will get marks from driving it... But still at times when I drive through the finnish salt covered roads (salt to prevent ice forming) I feel bad and think that I should have bought a worse example (mine is full original lowish mileage car with all the paperwork, museum registered etc).

I was 16 when the integrale was launched, and loved watching it on Top Gear Rally Report / going to the RAC and seeing them pass by in the Dalby forest woodyard (on the occasions that the works team bothered to attend the RAC!), then wandering into Martin Walter Lancia in Canterbury and looking at a humble Delta. Autocar ran an 8 valve long termer and put it up for sale in 1993 (I think) ..... £3,800 and 100k miles ...... I thought about it, but passed. Big mistake. An absolute poster pin up car. 8V Integrales (I have one too) have near-perfect, all-analog steering, like the E30 M3, 1st gen pre-facelift NSX, and 930 Carreras. But the Integrale is FWD, lacks the grunt of most of the others, and is comparatively as cheap as chips. While nearly all of them are rusted-through, like Chris said, they're worth saving, repairing, and driving. The most fun you can have in classic motoring, for anywhere near the price.

Love it! I went to buy a Delta 1600GT when I was 18 or 19. In silver with a steel factory, sunroof, it looked the dog’s. My first car was a SuperStrada with the X19 engine, on which the Delta was based. First junction, had to go from 2nd to 1st, still rolling. Crunch. ‘Sorry. I can’t live with that again’. All Fiats and Lancias did that due to a cable clutch 🥲

Younr bang on the money with the 8v, i paid £10,000 for a very tidy Lord blue Evo 2 20 yearsd ago but for north of £70,000 today theres many more things id choose first. The 8v is more than enough with everything you need for the full Integrale experience. I have a brand new Momo prototipo steering wheel gathering dust. It has the holes in the rim rather than the slits im afraid but i'd happily donate it to you, yours is looking rather tired lol

there's a true joy in owning the slower version of a car. when you drive it, you enjoy it for what it is. you have nothing to prove to anyone you drive with a clean attitude you are always surprised by how good the "non-hot" version actually is it allows you to focus more on the joys of driving and finally you can remind yourself constantly that you bought a bargain of a car I have a Bmw e28 520i, and I love that old thing.

In France, there are RHD tollbooths. You have to choose the right lane, but once you're in, the machine is at your right elbow. On the Dartford crossing there aren't any LHD tollbooths (as of pre-pandemic). I just get out of the car and saunter round to the machine whilst enjoying the horn concert.

I know you keep saying it isn't that fast but 190hp isn't slow is it? we're spoiled by modern cars. Anything with around 150hp per tonne, well that's not a slow car is it? It's probably capable of around 150mph. A slow car has 68hp Christopher. A really fast one has 300hp and anything above 500hp is utterly bonkers, the world of hyper cars has just exceeded comprehension and that Rimac Nivera has probably given you some kind of small traumatic brain haemorrhage. You don't have to justify 190hp, it's never about the power anyway with a cool car.

Couldn’t agree with the sentiment of “buy and drive what you can, while you can” any more. At 23, I feel it’s likely the opportunities for me to enjoy a variety of my favourite modern classics will be few and far between once I’ve got the spending power to even consider purchasing such cars. It’s probably why I’ve just bought a 187k mile, extensively modified, 12 owner, rusty E36 BMW 328i Sport as a dependable car to use through the winter. (Yes I know what I’ve described and dependable winter car aren’t exactly a match made in heaven) For anyone else who feels like the days of enjoying these cars are numbered, I urge you to go and make the silly purchase! Sure, there’s the anxiety of will it start in the morning, or what’s going to break this time, and the worry of parts cost and joys of fitting parts outside your flat on cold and dark winter evenings, BUT the memories, stories and experiences it will grant you will long outlast the years we will be able to enjoy and use such machines.
