And other corrections: HF it´s for "Helefantino Formula" that´s why ther´s an Elefhant. The pedals are not stock one´s, those are aftermarket and are fixed over the stock rubber ones The flash light it´s a malfunction, very common on italian brands in the 80´s The piece around the gear lever it´s a aftermarket piece from Isotta (aftermarket tuning company from italy), not a stock one! The light at the trunk it´s also aftermarket and probably is connected to the wires of the external back light, that´s why they have to be on. The original Delta doesn´t have a trunk light The side vent badge is also aftermarket. The stock ones are different. It also also the norm in Europe at the time. In European reviews of the era it was common for people to specify whether or not electric windows were fitted to both or front and rear, front only or not at all. Hatches in Europe were (and are) family vehicles, so it was generally regarded that the back seats are for kids, with the parents up front, so the back usually did get less creature comforts (and less stuff for the kids to play with / break). Personally also I don't see the point. Front electrics are for the driver to be able to lower the passenger window from their seat to be able to see clearly if the window has rain or frost on it, and to be able to put their own down in one quick press to pay for parking / tolls / drive-thru etc.

An about the elephants, Gianni Lancia chose an elephant as a good luck token for their first competition cars because in Eastern mythology a running elephant (with its tusks up) signifies 'victory'...

@imnotamechanic34915 жыл бұрын
It would act as a spoiler in that position. Because the car is AWD and front engined, and its a pretty light car, you would want extra traction on the back on rough surfaces. Some cars like the TVR Sagaris had a vertical spoiler as standard - and that was purely a road car. However, you are also right in that its providing a lot of drag, so really its just slowing you down and wasting fuel on the road - and doesn't make you look cool, especially if you put writing on it. Whereas the rest of the car is ultimate in cool.

The m3 was not a rally car. The evo2 was a straight 6 and not a force fed 4 like this. The only hot hatch competitor would be the Opel Astra/Kadett 200tS again not a rally car and much slower on take off. It's a miracle it didn't break down while Doug was driving it. The most critical part that Doug didn't mention was that they were notoriously unreliable like all other Italian cars and rust buckets. I love italian cars but will never by one as I would spend more time under them than inside them.

My dad had a base model 1980 MY delta. It had manual windows in the back AND in the front and we all sirvived the '80s. Also, I would not call the base model design exactly "boring", Giugiaro was designig the Delta at the same time he was working on the DeLorean and you can see loads of similarities in styling between the two, esp. In the base model..
@anjayl3 жыл бұрын
Well, TBH, having owned and driven 2 of these, it doesn't need a single horsepower more, it just needs gear shifting skills. I don't know how to translate that, but this car calls for the driver to have knowledge and mastery of "double shifting" and "round shifting", or RPM shifting, helped with things such as "heal-toe shifting".

Agree 100%. We hitchhiked one (it was in 90's) and I remember I sat in the back and in one of the hard corners I was thinking why is he driving so slow, man I would go much faster if I had this car because it felt like we were going less than 80km/h then I looked on the counter and saw over 140km/h! It was crazy stable car. One of the greatest legends for sure.

@LMacNeill "Truly a spectacular car for the day." Spectacular in what way? It is not a beautiful or spectacular looking car, admitted by the engineers that worked on the rally race versions, Sergio Limone. They had to work miracles to make this car win. But like someone said "Race cars are neither beautiful nor ugly. They become beautiful when they win." and this car won a lot.

Hi from Argentina. The 'HF' (High Fidelity) was due to the sound of the engines and their performance. Oh, and the tachometer doesn't turn in the opposite direction. It turns clockwise just like in most of the other vehicles, but it has a different starting point.
@GeorgeTsiros11 ай бұрын
The HF was because it was very much _like_ the rally car. Thus, "high fidelity". Doesn't have anything to do with the sound. Why would it? Fidelity in sound is a property, a quality, of sound _reproduction_ equipment. You say that an audio system has "high fidelity" when it reproduces the sound _accurately_ . You don't call the violin or the drums "high fidelity". They are not trying to replicate anything. However, since this car, the _entire_ car is trying to "replicate" the rally car (homologation and such), this "replication" is done accurately. Thus, it has a high fidelity.

Interesting fact: The wings on WRC cars and homologation cars such as this, has nothing to do with downforce. It's actually there to prevent the car nose diving over jumps. Of course it produces downforce as a side effect but that isn't its purpose.
@RiseAndDespair2 ай бұрын
No, this wing was precisely used to create extra downforce. Suffering from higher tire wear and less topspeed was the compromise. The wing layed flat in the African rally. Weight transfer is more important for jumps...
