The late Queen chose Bentley over Rolls. To answer Chris’s question on McDonald’s screens vs counters - they worked out that people order more food ordering on their own at a screen, rather than ordering from a person over the counter thinking they were being ‘judged’ on their quantities of food choices.

This is, without question, the best excuse not to do any work, for an hour or so, on a Friday. Harris, Clifford, Pandy, Lovett and Cooper, you are to be applauded and will forever be held in the highest esteem. I have a similar experience most Thursday evenings with mountain biking friends, after approximately 10 miles, at a mutually local pub, where we talk complete and utter bollocks for between 3 and 5 pints. Keep up the good work.

Right, I'm calling it. Forget all this car bollocks, we want a 3-hour podcast just about snacks. All of you had a glint in your eye as you provided eloquent detailed analysis of your choices, and it's the best thing you've done yet. Incidentally, M&S "Fruit Gums" are really Wine Gums but much better, especially if you can find one of their Red & Black Only bags.

Interesting points made about SUV's and I note that you use their unsuitability in urban environment as the crux of your problems with them, but as someone who lives on the edge of the Lake District, an area where you might argue they are fit for purpose, people seem to forget that the countryside is full of tight, windy b-roads. The last thing you want to meet on a tight b-road with grass up the middle is some clown in a bloody Audi Q7 who is so scared of pulling in to the hedge, in case they scratch it, because they're financed up the wahzoo to a value they can't really afford.

As an American, hearing them describe all of those English snacks was like hearing someone speak a foreign language that you barely understand. But I had a good time searching up images of what they were talking about, it all looks like food from an alternate universe

My hard copy of VVT arrived yesterday afternoon, intended as a Xmas present to me from my young granddaughters. I fear that I will finish reading it before the elves get chance to wrap it up and put it under the Xmas tree! The words flow easily and have brought back early memories for me.....learning basic steering skills as 5-6 year old sitting on my Father's lap at Finmere airfield near Buckingham, Scalextrix had to wait unto the birth of our son and his 3rd birthday as my late Father was more of a Hornby OO train man but we got to enjoy the Le Mans era with Porsche, Mercedes & Jaguar. Been fortunate to have owned and enjoyed some very nice bikes and cars over the years and glad to say that, at 67, the passion for ICE's does not diminish. The only downside is the number of cars now on our roads in such a small country; the near continent happily provides access to better driving opportunities. Wishing you every success with the book, Chris, both in literary and financial terms.

It has become a bit of a bore the discussion against SUV's, they all say "just get the wagon instead!" Totally agree with Neil, clearly the market thinks differently, but it never seems to be accepted within car media as to why. Assuming footprint is roughly the same (but generally wagons are longer than SUV's, eg; Cayenne vs Panamera, so the claim they're harder to park is wrong), day to day life in a metropolitan area with an SUV is easier than a wagon - easier height to load items into the boot, easier to get in and out of, easier to see further down the road due to ride height, generally a more upright seating position and generally a bit of a softer ride. Much higher demand so easier to sell is another positive for SUV's.

@@R03333 Why is that the only argument? For a start I am over 70 with dodgy knees and a bad back. Getting into anything else is horrendous. As for size going on about huge RR’s and Bentleys and complaining about all SUV is obtuse. There are other reasons as a short arse being able to around easily is another blessing. Your short sightedness is clearly obvious even to you.

Here's my idea for a two car garage with an Aussie twist to it. You and a mate are heading to the Bathurst 12 hr race weekend from Melbourne; a good couple of days drive through some very nice roads. Even though it is the 12 hr race, so no Ford vs Holden rivalry, you feel some nostalgia therefore decide one Ford and one Holden to be driven up. The cars should have some type of storage because you've spent all your money on tickets and cars, so you'll be camping on the top of Mt Panorama and of course you need room to smuggle in some bravery gravy.. Your budget is $100k AUD for both.

TWO CAR GARAGE: You are a gentleman driver. Your day job is a CEO of a HGV company who has hit the big time by securing a contract to recover the fortunes of Evri (who we all know is Hermes). With your contract bonus you have moved over £200.000 to spend on any race car in any series for your weekend races. However, you must include a trailer and a daily tractor to pull it to the local tracks within the £200.000.

What I will say about SUV's is if you are of a certain age, getting into a normal car car isn't easy. Mum in her early 80's has a jazz, that is very much grandmother spec as she is, but it is not easy for her to drop into one of those, where as to step into a SUV would be easier. But.. SUV's are anti-social because if you choose to have a normal car you can't see the traffic as easily ahead so it makes driving more of a guessing game.

On the buttons: what about the hazard light button on the 1st gen Twingo - they looked like a big emergency switch mounted on top of the dash. Talking about French cars: They did build some quirky and some real bold cars. What would your two car garage from France be , one being a "practical" daily-driver and one for the fun at the weekends. The quirkier the better. This has been said numerous times already but, regarding trucks and SUVs, it is important to note that they are not naturally occurring objects. Arguments like Neil’s that rely on the argument, “You can’t argue with the market” suggest that consumers are just naturally gravitating toward the tastiest berries they can forage. But auto companies are very strategically making the highest margin objects they can, and in the case of the U.S. we now know that as passenger vehicle regulations changed (with the help of lobbying efforts), more of these huge, high margin vehicles were built and marketing to the public as safe, adventure-ready haulers. No wonder they are popular - they play into desires for power, capability, and notions of independence.

It may be as bad or worse, I've never seen it calculated, but I find it difficult to believe that wearing a Rolex watch, or even a Patek Philippe, causes as much global warming as a large heavy, SUV, other air pollution, more wear and tear on the roads, greater injury to pedestrians or damage to other vehicles hit, and problems with traffic and parking in urban areas. If you are aware of any data indicating watch wearing, including or exclusive to expensive watches, exacerbates any or all of the above, could you please link to it? Thanks!

SEGMENT SUGGESTION: What is the coolest bolt-on modification/addition you can make to a performance car? Some answers are very brand-specific, such as Alpina wheels on a powerful BMW, but this is to any and all performance cars. I have a potential question for you all. You've recently moved house and have found yourself with extra space outside, and on the fringes of some wonderful driving roads, which is a perfect opportunity for fulfilling your long-standing desire to separate your fun car from your daily. Whilst despite your insatiable desire for a Porsche GT product (other brands are available) you cannot yet afford the premiums such a car commands. The fun car will mainly be used on the glorious roads around you, as well as trips to circuits, both domestic, and continental a couple of times a year. Therefore, with a little left over from the house sale, and the sale of your existing car, you have a total of £50,000 to put towards a fun car, and a soothing daily driver to eat up the miles travelling around the country. Where would you put your hard earned money?

On buttons, I had an x100 XKR that had a hidden button (add on) under the steering wheel, not visible, the dealer I got it from didn’t know about it, so the first time it was pressed by me was by accident, I didn’t know I had pressed it, but a persons voice came out of the speakers “hello, how can I help you?” .. er what! Turned out it was an old Sat Nav/assistance system, which was paid on a per-press basis, when I had subscribed, for about 20-30p I could press the button and have an operator say hello, in whatever way I wanted, so for me it was “hello Mr Steel, this is your PA (name) what can I do for you today?” And I would press it every time I had a passenger for a laugh. You could ask them for directions, petrol station, a type of shop etc. and they would send directions to the system, which was then voice only directions, but very accurate and precise, also though, it would have birthday/ occasion reminders, you could order flowers.. it was bloody brilliant.

It’s surprising to me how the SWB 4x4 market has died. Possessing the positive attributes of the LWB versions in a package of a similar footprint to an Audi A3 seems a very appealing proposition. Apart from the very attractive current Defender 90 and Jimny models, I can’t think of many…it’s maybe why the old Shogun and Landcruiser SWBs to me now look so appealing and why they retain such strong values

If Porsche had spent the last 30 years keeping the 911 small, increasing the power to 300-350bhp and making sure it does 35-40mpg and emits
