I was really struggling with this recently which shows in my recent content. I don't like the way I (personally) had begun to associate collecting with a meaning like "amassing without necessarily using" which didn't feel like it adequately described what I do. I got excited about "library" because... like... a library assumes in and out use right? So I was like THAT'S it and started to change my language.... but ... the MOMENT you started describing the way your tarot and oracle decks feel treasured... it all just clicked. You're right. Books on my shelf feel more... mm.. mundane. And the idea of collection as treasured... just.. it reminded me of the other ways to look at that word. Thank you so much! I really enjoyed this perspective... :D

I like the word "library" it has such a wonderful cozy feel to it so I can certainly see how it would fit as a descriptor as well. But what I realized was that for me personally, even though I did try it on, it didn't fit for me... a library feels like more of a place, a collection is what I put in that place. So maybe I have a library with a tarot collection inside hehe. :) I think it's such an interesting discussion, and like most things in life, a really personal decisions. I had been hearing a lot about why people wanted to adopt that word, which is awesome if it resonates for them, but I wanted to share a different perspective. I think I'm just more precious about my decks than my books... can't believe I said it, but there it is. :)

As a librarian, I just want to add that librarians all over the world often use the word "collections" to describe the books in posession of the library! I think your definition of the word is lovely. It's also lovely to see people choosing the word they think perfecly descibes their decks. Language is awesome in that way, lots of options to choose from 💖

Yes that is what i was going to suggest that the library is the space to house the collection. So your tarot room or study/studio may be the place where you home the collection of your tarot decks, books, oracles, crystals etc....

I like to think of my deck collection as like an art gallery, I see them like little art prints. It's like a mini version of my collection of paintings. If you think about it, museums and galleries are also "collections." Minimalism has become trendy recently, which is understandable considering just how bad mass consumerism can be for both our wallets and the environment, only problem is that people have begun to conflate collecting with hoarding, but the big difference is the sense of value and care that a collection holds. It kind of reminds me of how minimal and capsule wardrobes are being talked about more in the fashion community, but there seems to be this weird idea that a minimalist or capsule wardrobe must be nothing but bland basic tees and pants. I've seen people get shamed for having more colorful pieces in their capsule wardrobes. The mindset seems kinda similar to how people treat deck collectors.

Same. For me “collection” has never had negative connotations. Collecting is a hobby, a way to engage with objects that bring you joy. To me it has connotations of active engagement, cultivating and pruning and shaping with purpose and intention. And just like when the community was talking about purchasing and how much was too much, I feel like it all depends on the individual. Thanks for opening some space in the community for collecting to be appreciated.

Many many people in the world collect “things,” figurines for example. They purchase something and put it on a shelf and it sits there among other figurines and is never really used. No one questions that, right? Many people collect handmade watercolour paints, swatch them once to photograph them for Instagram and never actually paint anything with them. Who cares? It makes them happy. Tarot cards are no different. I probably have thirty decks in my house. I might use one or two at a time. I have them arranged in a way that makes sense to me, on shelves rather like I arrange my books. Your analogy to a library of books is how I see my decks. It can be a collection, a library, or any other word we might call them. That’s just semantics. What matters is that they bring something positive to my life. It’s a comfort to have them. Like you said, they are treasured. I feel so lucky to have such a beautiful resource to tap into when I need to think something through. Something doesn’t need to be used every day or even every season or year to be of value to us. ❤

I feel like words are far more individual than we sometimes realise, as away from general accepted meanings, what we're inferring, our relationship with a word makes it something more, something tailored to our lens and understanding. So I understand what you mean, especially when these discussions pop up solely around a word, and often even extending into how others practice rather than the focus of simply what works or doesn't for ourselves. I enjoy community reflections, just preferring them when people can retain the responsibility that their lens isn't everyones. Hopefully that makes sense, I am not sleeping well in the heat. I enjoyed hearing what collection means to you. Also, even for those who have collections in ways where they are kept on the shelf and not used, if that works for them that's awesome. It's a shame more can't be ok with this without misinterpreting everything under the guise of consumerism, etc. I feel like sometimes those discussions get entangled and I can see why, but it's not always a given. I'm rambling anyways. I enjoyed this brief little discussion from you.

No doubt some card readers consider 'collectors' dilettantes- chasing a fad. Perhaps some are. But I think the strongest negative reactions are from readers seeing Collectors as gamblers, driving up prices and hoping to profit... thus making it more expensive and further encouraging deck creators to do Limited Editions, uber-fancy packaging, etc. Not that having a hard case instead of a tuckbox is bad. But gold foil and printing on every bleepin' surface inside the box is becoming a baseline.

I find it so interesting that there are certain things deemed acceptable to collect while other things being collected are questioned. And many many acceptable things to collect are left in their original packaging and on display, never to be played with. It is so strange to me that people cherry pick what should or should not be interacted with in a collection. If something is being collected then it has meaning to the collector and thats all that matters. Wonderful video.

Thank you for your thoughtful take on this, I too have a treasured collection of decks. They are carefully curated according to how i use them and how that use changes over time. I was also thinking about the comparison with books... If I said I had 100 books no one would bat an eyelid! Yet of those 100 books I may only ever take down and read 10 favourites, whereas I use ALL my decks every year at some point! Perhaps the most wonderful aspect of having a deck collection is the JOY they inspire and the sheer enjoyment in looking through them and using them ✨💕💗☺️🥰🤩

I use both words interchangeably because like you I don’t think collection is a bad word & in French we might refer to our tarot collection as “tarothèque” like tarot/bibliothèque (french for library) mash up that is just a super common word to refer to an accumulation of tarot decks in one’s space so for me both words feel the same but I really enjoyed your definitions & points of views ! I’m amassing a huge tarot deck “collection” myself. Sometimes people try to assert dominance by taking a moral “high ground” - in this case shaming people for not being as holy (e.g., environmentally conscious) as they are. I have lots to say about the minimalism movement - minimalism can be good, solid advice; and some of it can be classist elitism that completely ignores the realities and hardships of people who don’t have ready access to lots of cash. I had hoped the more annoying aspects of minimalism would die in the face of covid (can’t always buy everything you need anytime you want), but it stubbornly lives on and bleeds into all kinds of online culture. I digress though… For me, I work in a corporate environment. A very competitive corporate environment. Tarot decks are my only access to art, and for that reason my decks are very precious to me. I will continue to support the artists who give me so much joy and meaning in my life.

Yes! I know this has been a very prominent season of tarotubers decluttering and with the minimalism movement going on, it can transform a perfectly manageable collection into feeling that it’s now a “hoard” and associate feelings of guilt and shame. There’s a lot of people online who seem to smugky shame people with more than x decks, more than y shirts, more than z books, and that kind of peer pressure to make you feel badly. I have about 250 decks right now. I use all of them. Maybe I could declutter, but I don’t want to. I think I may soon get to the point where I have a 1 in, 1 out rule… but I’m not there yet. I love my entire collection right now.

I agree. It's been really interesting to watch minimalism creep into the Tarot world. Of course, yo each their own. And I watch decluttering videos. But I personally have zero desire to declutter right now. I've got decks in my collection that I haven't used for years. I actually pulled one out today because an idea for an excellent Oracle deck to pair with it showed up in a video I watched. Had I decluttered it I wouldn't be able to use a new fun pairing. I regularly purchase new decks, but I do personally do so in a more mindful way. I cultivate my deck collection to what resonates with me. I think it's all about what works for you. Candy Soul and Soil did an amazing video on her personal deck decluttering and no buy year journey (another thing i have no desire to do). For her, collecting was affecting her mental health negatively. So for her, making changes has really been a positive thing. So, to each their own. But there's nothing wrong in general with collecting, unless it becomes a problem for an individual.

It wouldn't matter if you bought a new deck every day, did one reading and burned it. Your practice is your practice. Lately, I love to think about different decks, by different creators being in dialogue. I like that in my tarot tube community as well. Personally, I appreciate it when you share your thoughts about your collection. I also enjoy creators who are exploring the concept of a currated library with their decks. I don't think that one approach diminishes the other.

And let's be honest- a lot of the things we "recycle" or pass on, even to places like Goodwill or second hand stores, etc. end up in landfills or even in the ocean, especially niche items like Tarot decks. I'd rather a loved deck stay on my shelf, even if it's not used regularly, then clogging up a landfill. It's okay to keep things we enjoy, even if we don't have the time to use them as much as we'd like.

I thoroughly enjoyed your discourse on this topic! 🙏❤️😄 I agree with you that “collection” is a far better descriptor than “library” for an assortment of items that are treasured and/or used regularly. I hadn’t given this much thought, but I tend to think of my decks similarly. I can’t recall if I use the word collection or not; I love the idea of a library as well because I tend to use and hold onto books that I refer to regularly. So they, too, are treasured items in a similar way that my decks are (if that makes sense). I prefer to keep books that are treasured (even if I don’t read them or dip into them much) and offload books that I’m only going to read once. Some books I dip into so regularly that I keep them on my desk or next to my bed or in my bag - same as my decks. I loved this so much. Thank you for offering a fresh perspective on this topic! ❤️🙏🌈😘

Collection…it is not a “dirty” word but just like most (if not all) words, it is a neutral one. What happens is that people assign their own personal/emotional feeling to the words and then people begin to objectively see certain words as “bad” when they are not. A collection *can* be a sacred, treasured thing *or* something that is done mindlessly without purpose. It depends on the individual (even whether it is a healthy habit or unhealthy. It all depends on how the collections are gathered and cared for, and etc.) I have personally started to use “tarot library” because it represents the active (using my decks) side of my tarot collection and because of the (esoteric) studying and reading being done with the tarot. Having and using different decks (to me), is the same as reading different books. Some (books) might be similar but they still offer different experiences, same for decks. Even though I use “tarot library”, my tarot library is still a collection. To me, it is both. A sacred, meaningful, and mindful collection as well as a library. Even a library is a collection of books. And a library, for me, is sacred just as much as personal, meaningful collections are because knowledge is sacred. I find myself picking up my books again and again as my books are mostly all non-fiction (and I can learn from them again and again) which is what I consider tarot decks to be as well. And really, libraries are the same with how “collection” is at first a neutral word then becomes personal depending on the individual. Everyone treats/access libraries differently; many people *do* simply put books back and never reach for it again, some just have books just to have them and never read them, but there are still also many other people who *do* constantly access their libraries, learning from all kinds of books (whether non-fiction or not) and reading them again and again, cycling through different ones, the same as we do with our tarot decks. So really, in the end, it depend on the person and how one wishes to view these words but to me, tarot is both; a collection and a library
@RetroXRicardo

I made a video exactly about this called "Why I Collect Decks". The word collection is not a dirty word. It's defined as "a gathering of things". I collect because it stems from my childhood and how my parents would also collect, so it's a familiar behavior. I don't think of my collection as treasured items, but a bunch of things I want to use and will use often. As a minimalist, I only keep things that I use, or else it leaves my home. That's just ME, that's how I've leaned to cope and heal from my obsessive personality. There are reasons why people collect, but the power of knowing WHY you collect will really bring purpose and perspective to a person. Some collect for comfort, for safety, for competition, for completion, for pleasure, to escape, to hide, to keep busy, or to maintain a business. I choose not to have a library, but a small and selective collection that will heavily be monitored and curated! The "why" is important to know in collecting than "how much". The word collection can only feel dirty or negative if it's hurting you and your loved ones around you. When it becomes an impediment instead of an empowerment. Hope this makes sense! 🤗🤗🤗

Thank you! I've always loved collecting various things. It's less about gathering as many things as possible and more about curating, interacting and being curious. I'm sad when collection gets described in moralistic terms like it's something greedy or empty. I go back and forth on the subject. I think ultimately its just semantics. The word collection implies different things to different people, same with library. My guess is for a lot of people collection is associated with the classic "buy, put on display, never open the original packaging" image of collectors while library is a selection of items available for constant use. I do think the tendency people have to get defensive over their entitlement to collecting is dismissive of the bigger conversation at hand. I'll never judge anyone for however decks they own, whatever number is right for them is none of my business. But it's disingenuous to approach the subject as if tarottube exists in the vacuum of space, criticism on consumerism isn't a personal attack on anyone in particular. Collections and collection videos have been the pinnacle of mindless consumerism on the Internet, KZbin specially, for years and in spaces outside tarot as well. Conversations about mindfulness and spiritual consumerism are always important to have, but it's important to remember different words mean different things to different people!

I'm honestly tired of the collection vs anti-collection discussion. I've actually watched channels make videos about collection being excessive consumerism, continue to buy more decks and then get mad when people question it. It's getting silly. It's literally no one else's business how many decks a person has or doesn't have. It's fine for people to talk about and share their thoughts on their own decks and why they have the number of decks they do, but it's absolutely none of their business how many decks other people have or how often they do or don't use them.

This was great. I use collection because it feels active and ever changing vs. a library which only feels gathered. Beautiful deck too!!

Thank you for pushing back on the "deck library" trend. In some ways, "library" does feel less personal and intimate than "collection," and even beyond that, I don't think a deck needs to be regularly "checked out" from a library in order to be a valued and meaningful item that may contribute to one's happiness or practice. "Deck library" is of course fine if people feel that's a better fit for them, but I don't like the connotation I sometimes pick up on that a deck has to be regularly rotated through a library in order to justify its purchase or in order for it to contribute in valuable ways to someone's life.

I don't know what exactly made you make this video but I noticed that it has been a tendency for some time that certain people 'hijack' perfectly innocent descriptive words like: collection, man, woman, blind, white, black, buy... and assign it an emotional meaning (only good or only bad) without considering the definition and the context. And then force their opinion on everyone who gets in their way. Humans are very bad communicators to start with and this tendency of speech policing makes human communication with certain individuals almost impossible. You, as a public figure (anyone on the Internet has access to your toughts and personal opinions) naturally draw their attention. But remember MOST people are still quite reasonable and really enjoy opinions others than their own, lol. I love your content, keep it up! (I loved your cardstock 'tantrum' and totally agree. The Pagan Otherwords is my favourite deck because I love the touch and feel of the cards and the smell is heavenly, lol).

I love your message here. Over the years it's almost a taboo, having multiple decks, having decks that are OOP.... and I just don't get it! These are Spiritual tools that should be used at our discretion in any way we want. But when it became a trend to get rid of most of the decks in ones collection it suddenly became a "dirty word" as you said. I never understood it, so Im really happy you took time to adress it🙏🏾🤎
