I used to have a lot of knives like you in a few cases but I decided to consolidate into nicer blades that I liked everything about and didn't have any negative thoughts about. Ended up with 7 folders and 7 fixies. Interestingly enough these 14 knives are probably worth more than the whole of my previous large collection.

Beautiful collection, really beautiful, but... I agree that cold steel is a proletarian brand and the peaces they produce are more working knife oriented or "show off" in some cases, but they still are a huge espression of a popular, in some way, folk american culture. Some peaces of coldd steel truly are. You have quite a lot of great knifes, just a touch of good "dirtynes", and recent history of the mob. I love how you customize your knives with different scales. I love modern knives. But I also love older knives. It’s really cool to see how far we have come in terms of materials and styling. A lot of your knives look look tactical with the blacked out finishes. I love to current trend of small knives, and I love customs.. Damascus blades. You might want to check out a Rockstead knife. I have a problem. I keep buying and pretty much never sell lol. I have bought more then ever this past year too. To the point I have bought 6 new cases this year alone lol. One of the Cutlery Shoppe cases and 4 of the V100 with Nalpak from Drop and one of the bigger Vault Pelican cases not sure what the model number is but it looks like one of those bigger plastic ammo cans and it has Nalpak and holds 48 knives all this besides the other Apache 3800 cases I already had with Nalpak inserts that hold 40 each then there is the fixed blades and knives laying all over and in rolls lol. I have 4 packages in the mail now if I ever get them. The GPK Protech Strider the green micarta version and I have the BHQ DLC exclusive one coming too and the DLT DLC 20cv Delica, the SPY27 Mule Team.

A diffuse conglomeration of knives lacking in focus and quality. Even the way you talk about it points to this being an accrual exercise rather than curated collection: - you need not explain each knife, but do you yourself know how each knife fits into the overall collection, besides “I like it”. Stronger collections function on multiple levels - yes, each knife should be great on its own, but a collection also works almost in a narrative form as a whole, which adds value. A collection would also make it easy to understand and decide “why this and not that…”. Besides, you currently own lots of 'mid-range' and some 'lower-range' but none of the 'upper-range' knives. Could be by design, could be due to lack of it... For example, I would have sold five mid-range knives and got one Rockstead instead: yes - better investment, yes- worth passing to kids, yes - more value in less space, AND more importantly - BETTER knife. On the other hand, Chinese outfits like Reate, WE/Civivi, make OK knives that are NOT collectible long-term; i.e. a passing fad. Just like other brands that were hot years ago and by now largely disappeared: Olamic, Custom Knife Factory, Ferrum Forge, - where art though? The "Boker" you mentioned at 9:08 is NOT a "Treebrand Boker", but a "Boker Plus" as clearly labeled on its blade. "Boker Plus" is a budget brand made in either Argentina or China. While all "Treebrand Bokers" are still hand-made in Solingen Germany, and their high cost reflects that - we are talking about an equal to any hand-made custom. When you handle a "Treebrand Boker" you know right away it is a luxury item. Most of their lineup is not even available in the US as they traditionally have not sold well here - due to high price and not making flippers... If you are interested in strengthening your collection, I’d suggest deciding what you really like and narrowing your accrual down until your accrual becomes a cohesive collection that you can talk about as a whole… And, do yourself a favor and offload those seductive but lacking substance Reate's... Cheers! PS> By narrow focus I do not mean all knives looking alike! - In fact, I was responding to the fact that most of your knives already look too much alike without bringing anything new of their own to the table! I personally like having each knife offer something unique and not available elsewhere - I love my pm2 in maxamet for its maxamet blade and oh-so-rare-for-a-knife distal taper; I love my Rocksteads for their 'true mirror' ZPD189 blades without any secondary bevels (rare nowadays); I like my Treebrand Bokers (Tirpitz and Leopard series) for their Thomas Balbach-forged Damascus blades with 62HRC hardness ( - unlike the American Chad Nichols flaccid drivel damascus with its 56-58HRC "softness"...) Anyhow - I do not get the same knife done by different people - instead, try to get different knives, where each one adds to the overall story...
@beardedgear3 жыл бұрын
First thing, this was definitely longer than I was willing to read, definitely just skimmed through it haha. But I’d argue that there isn’t a “right way” to build a collection of anything. The way you collect something is personal, there are no rules. Second, I don’t think I claimed that the Boker was a “tree brand” boker, if I did that’s my bad. It’s definitely a Chinese made one. Third, if you have this many opinions about knives you should start a channel of your own, I mean this constructively, if you have points to make that’ll be a much better way than writing essays in a comment section.
@yoryteperman4293 жыл бұрын
@@beardedgear Well, thank you for skimming through my long missive. I tend to type fast, so it did not feel overly long to write it - probably solid four or five min at most... Also, I am too impulsive for having my own channel, and normally do not comment much at all, then, once per year go off on some poor soul in a long missive - as here. My own collection is ten years old, but it's been on and off, as knives is not the only passion of mine; I am like intensely into it for three-four months until I loose interest for the next two-three years, and then pick it up again. Would not be good for a channel... But I find my once-per three years forays into knife collecting very helpful as time is the great judge - and gives awesome perspective for a collector - after three years away, one can immediately spot all of the genuine innovation that happened and all the inconsequential bullshxt that arose in the past three years - and purchase accordingly... That was my last. Enjoy collecting whichever way you end up doing it. Cheers!
