My philosophy is buy once and don't buy something that I know for a fact I don't want to keep, at least in the medium-long term. I only buy watches I can't stop thinking about when I have a free minute or keep coming back to in my research. This also allows me to pass on many "value" watches which I think for many people just pile up into consumerism and buying things for no reason. Buy the right stuff, buy the good stuff, buy the stuff you truly want, and slow down on the spending. You can be an enthusiast of a brand or watch and never buy it. My other opinion is that small, curated, and focused collections mean more than collections of 10,15, 20+ watches. You only have one wrist, so you probably only "need" 4-6 watches, which then frees up cash for other hobbies, vacations, experiences, etc

I see watches as collectable and fungible as usually depreciating assets to be leveraged when possible. I like to keep a core of 5-8. I like varieties of brands, and different types of movements but they must be all house. I just traded 3 rolex, a tudor, 58 and a GS Skyflake for Patek. Sure I lost a little bit on the trade but I wasn't really wearing them and I had gotten seduced by the idea that you never trade/sell a Rolex. Ridiculous. They are mass produced goods and readily available on the second hand market if I ever have a regret. I never realized how good a watch could be when it is under 10MM thick with multiple calculations driven by a beautiful 240 PS caliber. So now I have the 5 watches I consider the sweet spot, for now: JLC rose gold Geophysics 1958, Rolex Yachtmaster, Omega OP Tokyo 2020, Tudor FXD and a white gold Patek. All in house movements, variety of functions and occasions, multiple precious metals and all worn every week.

@@davidr2802 I love this thought process! Which Patek did you get? I dream of owning one and I think doing some smart trades to get there is more than reasonable. As you said, Rolex is mass produced, I would lean towards getting something special like a Patek if I had the chance!

I was amazed by the Omega CK859. As soon as I put it on my wrist it was "love at first sight" :) So I bought it instantly and never regretted it. For that watch, I have around 10 bands :)

I bought an Alpina Startimer instead of an IWC Pilot. Looking back, I didnt want either, but its nice not going in the hole. Additionally, I got a Hamilton Mechanical Field Watch, I absolutely hate winding it, so it saved me from a more expensive mistake. My Speedmaster Racing 40mm grey (44% off) and Seamaster 300m Chrome (35% off) are my ride or dies. I have 6 straps that keep me from buying more watches.

Watched this video with a CK 859 on my wrist. It is a stunning watch and a joy to wear everyday. I put it on a stainless mesh omega bracelet and it has elevated the watch to an even higher level. Plus it has been an incredibly accurate watch movement for me as well. At my annual check-up, even the Omega service employees stop to compliment the watch when they walk by. I don’t know why it was discontinued so quickly. Buy it if you have a good offer. Worth every penny.

I have 15 watches in my collection, from Tissot and Seoko to Cartier and Rolex, but a watch I wouldn't consider selling is the FC Highlife World Time. Yes, an FC. It's so comfortable on the rubber, the blue is perfect and the complication is awesome.

Your collection is an expression of yourself. Its size is up to you, there is no standard to meet to keep your collector card. Wear your collection in good health.

Good episode. Bruce, I thank/blame you for my luxury watch buying spree during the pandemic :) I have recently consolidated and upgraded, trading two luxury watches that were not getting wrist time for my grail watch - a pristine, full set, mint 18238. I would not have bought the Day-Date outright due to its cost, but trading up made it very easy to do. No regrets and delighted to finally be an "old man with a gold Rolex on his wrist". Cheers!

I had between 50-60 mostly entry level watches at one point. I started selling on eBay and trading via the local classified ads. Now I’ve paired it down to 8 core pieces 😅 I’ve definitely ridden the horological rollercoaster
