Similar to RVW's "Lark", but very beautiful and striking in its own right. More of a Poem than a Concerto. I love the harmony in this . The violinist plays it very tenderly.

Vaughan Williams said she was so courageous to go on with so little recognition, but that it would come. Sadly, it is still not widespread, but at least her music is now available to a worldwide audience.

The orchestra is the BBC Ulster Orchestra. The work seems to center tonally around A Major (that harmony is both the opening and final chord), but is composed freely without key signature (although an A-flat Major signature does briefly appear), and was dedicated to the memory of her mother. It is in 3 continuous movements: I. Lento ma non troppo 0:00 II. Adagio 7:10 III. Allegro ma non troppo - A tempo tranquillo - Tempo I 11:45 The 'A tempo tranquillo' section is given the subscript: "This movement is based on a carol tune 'All Souls Flower', written for my mother Christmas 1928 to words by Pamela Grey of Fallodon'. Ms. Grey may have been a relative of the Viscount of Fallodon, which is in Northumberland on the northeast coast of England adjacent to the Scottish border. The carol begins in the flute part @ 12:31. The text is as follows: 'A Flower has blossmed in this land 'Twas planted by no mortal hand A Flower so fair, so clear of blue Ever its leaves are fresh and new Come! Lords and Ladies see this thiing! It grows for our souls' bettering! O, lovely flower! Blossom and Thorn of Mary's bower! This Flower, it is so pretty a thing, It holds remede for sorrowing. So sweet a sap runs in its veins, as may subdue all griefs and pains. If any man lack heart or mood, Straightway it maketh these losses good. O, Flower of price! Sing we, sing we of Paradise. This Flower, that is of such nature, Surely it grows in some green pasture, beside some willow-hidden brook, Wherein all day the skies look. It grows for all the World to see, It grows beside a bitter Tree. O, Flower of Grace! That is, for all our sins, solace.'

Absolutely beautiful music and wonderfully played. It’s easy to hear the influence of the great Vaughan Williams in this music.

So lovely. It has the feel of RVW's "The Lark Ascending". Some places remind me of the opening of Sir Granville Bantock's "Celtic Symphony".

A slow "solemnity" first movement, almost a hymn with the very clever use of cellos and horns outlining the violin phrases but leaving it sometimes "alone" in the middle of a desert, always giving the impression it will start something more decisive. But it doesn´t.

Same sort of world as the first of Reger's Bocklin Portraits (which sounds surprisingly like a sort of Germanic 'Lark Ascending').
