There is no shame in crying, I literally cried hearing you talking about Queen and an Old Maid. I am deep in the yaoi rabbit hole (and don't get me wrong, I'm there happily) so seeing a story that authentically portrays a feminine bi man as being a "valid man" as well as the real difficulties of embodying womanhood as a woman, that's so incredibly special imho. I'm LITERALLY about to starting crying again lol. Lovely video. Have you read Ooku? Please read Ooku. (the way im asking that and there's like a 50% your channel is how I first learned about Ooku lol)

also, a kind of fun fact: I’m a doll collector and collect mainly Pullip dolls and I know they made Ririko doll in the red dress from the Helter Skelter live action movie! she is a limited doll and well sought after, and I think it’s cool that while the manga and movie itself is somewhat niche, there is a significant amount of people in another niche community that love it.

Kind of unrelated to the video but have you heard about the Clamp/Uniqlo collab? I’m personally in love with the Magic Knight Rayearth shirt, and I think this is a major win considering that we never get merch for any shojo other than Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, or Fruits Basket in the states! In fact, Uniqlo is the ONLY brand in the USA that I have seen ever collaborating with shojo mangaka. It’s not a confirmation for more shoujosei merch by any means, but it’s definitely a start!

I'm glad to see you cover josei manga. Most of the manga I read nowadays tends to be Josei. One of my favorite josei manga sub genres is TL manga and it's unfortunately barely even known about in the west.

TL is teens' love. Doesn't necessarily mean teen protagonists though. It's just directed to older teens and young adults. One that I like is Mousou Shoujo.
@magnadramon0068
@magnadramon0068 Жыл бұрын
@@sharnicaxd5321 "TL" is short for Teen's Love. The name is misleading as it is mostly about adults and is made for older readers. It's a mature romance genre. I got into it because it deals with topics and subject matter you won't typically see in romance for younger audiences. For example one of my favorites is Loose Night a story about a straight woman dating a bisexual drag queen. And talks about some of the struggles with being bi that I have never see in most western or Asian media. The websites Renta!, Book Walker and Manga Plaza all have TL sections.

That opening sketch made me chuckle. Also, I'm no expert, but for the record, I think you are pretty good at what you do here. I've learned more about shoujo and josei manga from watching your videos these last couple months than I ever knew as a mostly anime-only fan this past decade. (And I didn't know jack squat about the magazines that publish this stuff until seeing your deep dive vids either.) I even started reading "Sand Chronicles" thanks to your Shoujo Starter Pack video. (My local library has the entire series.) The drama's a little over the top, but the story and characters feel earnest, so I'll definitely finish it. What I mean to say is, thank you and keep doing what you're doing as long as it makes you happy! ☺️ As for the recs here "A Queen and an Old Maid" really jumped out at me as someone who's also way too self-deprecating and jealous of my own friends. 😅 I prefer reading manga in print, but I might have to suck it up for that one!

ahh, I've been on a josei kick lately, though it has almost entirely been yuri content haha. Even though we're adults is on my list, but I haven't gotten to it yet. I struggle to get over the hump of the classic sapphic story formula that is woman in a loveless straight marriage meets an alluring woman at a bar, a chance encounter ensues, changes her whole world. So I've mostly been reading doujins and oneshots... (an english release 'Asumi-chan is interested in Lesbian Brothels' goes unbelievably hard but it is really just lighthearted smut. just great gay sex. a whole lot of it. FOR THE MF GIRLS!!!!) A Queen and an Old Maid sounds like it was made for me, and I need to read it immediately. I latch onto tall girl protags instantly. I love them so much (I love Fujiyama-san wa Shishunki it *is* a seinen but also a female mangaka (insomniacs after school). I recognize it is not for everyone! the art is beautiful. Fujiyama is the best.) I am getting distracted! Great video as always!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Going to manga plaza dot com and i'm going to pay them money to make me cry.

It's intereting. I've unexpectedly been spending a whole lot of time in K Manga, despite the general structure still being a mess. (At least as far as we want it to be, where something like Viz/WSJ subscriptions just "feel normal," or Azuki, etc.) However, near as I can tell, K Manga has by far the highest quantity of josei in it. Your classics like Princess Jellyfish and Nodame Cantabile, your modern classics like Chihayafuru and Wotakoi, your newer and currently-running like Something's Wrong with Us and Nina the Starry Bride... Since the structure (and not paying an arm an a leg) encourages/enforces "read wide, not fast or deep" one picks up dozens of titles, and since they're all in a big pool you don't know their magazine of source or necessarily know their target demographic. (Other than what one already knows about their design, or gleans quickly from character ages, maturity of setup, etc.) But quite a lot is here, from "important and great" like Perfect World to your "hey this is pretty screwed up" like Something's Wrong with Us or Kakafukaka. XD For myself, I find my own predilections highlighted by "what titles you spend your Premium Tickets on so you can read faster." Started with Wotakoi, then I think moved on to Noragami, then to Witch Hat Atelier, Perfect World, Something's Wrong with Us... Not sure what the total number of josei is in here, but it's more than I was expecting (from the sad state of translated josei made available in these apps). I can discover them accidentally and be encouraged by "hey, wow, another josei!" XD I might do some specific scouring here, and on other apps, to see. It's interesting to me, at least. Doing a deep dive into the digital services, and what they offer from a shojosei perspective, might also be worthwhile for your audience. Even if they're not necessarily the best reading or collecting experiences, there can still be a lot to offer from the free or reasonably-priced-subscription perspective.

I appreciated the (I believe) Spider-man 3 reference! The video is amazing again and it made me want to try at least 4 of these at once. I'm a big shoujo fan, but josei has kind of been out of my view as I got into anime young. I believe my time has come to explore!

I'm having alot of fun reading Something's Wrong With Us, unfortunately I can only read 3 chapters per day... I have a physical copy of Helter Skelter, other Josei that I have physical and one of my all time favorite manga is Gokusen.

Hello, Colleen! First off, I wanted to say that I love your videos! I am completely new to anime and manga. And tbh I can't really give a good opinion, because I still have read/watched very little. But a tendency I find within myself is that I always gravitate towards Shojo. I am a (cis) man, and I have had times when anime fans find it weird that I would like Shojo because of my gender identity. My question is: Do you think the Shojo community is welcoming to boys/men who also like to read/watch Shojo? ❤
