The combination probably of wanting to strike gold with an adaptation, while not wanting to give it a large budget in order to (in their minds) maximize their return. The problem is too tight of a budget, or being given to a studio on the cheap usually leads to a poor product. They fail to learn the lesson because the failure of the adaptation itself is then blamed on the source being adapted...rather than the fact they cheaped out on adapting it in the first place and didn't take sufficient or even respectful care when making it.

I got attached to the characters and I'm not gonna lie, the angsty parts got to me in the best way. I cried because I cared, which is not something that happens with every story. The drama, the romance and the action are to my taste. Although you do need to forgive some things along the way because this is an old series, there was no deal breaker for me. This happens to so many series even WEBTOON adaptations aren’t safe. My fave one “Sweet Home” was butchered by pretty boys trying to act seriously and doing it poorly and bad cgi. One of the first that comes to mind is the second Percy Jackson movie, the first was okay, and still enjoyable in it's own way, but Sea of Monsters was an abomination and completely ruined the important lore of the books, especially with that awful ending 😨

7SEEDS is actually the anime that made me decide to read mangas before animes. Originally I'd watch the anime before decided whether I liked it or not. And then decided whether I cared to read the manga. 7Seeds was a series I decided I wouldn't read the manga, because while it was a neat story an I'd enjoyed it, I just never really got to the point of caring about it and it left me confused and not wanting anymore of it. Until I was immensely bored one day and read the manga online, I was immediately extremely engaged with the story and characters, and my heart was full of rage for what the anime did to this amazing story. It unfortunately made me be wary of anime adaptations and I even avoided watching animes altogether. I've gotten over it a bit, but it still pains me to think there were people who watched 7seeds and thought 'meh average story' and never thought of it again. I will never watch an anime before a manga if I can help it though 😌 but i will add; I don't like it when other manga fans diss anime just for being slightly different than the manga. Sometimes that sort of thing is necessary for it to run smoothly in a different format and audience. But I understand when they get upset when anime onlies aren't experiencing the full story; I understand it all too well. That was a ramble I'm sorry. What I was trying to say was: Thank you for talking about 7SEEDS it's an amazing manga I'm glad there are people who also really love it. And thanks for putting my grievances towards the anime into words.

Mary Sue's (and Gary Stu's) are definitely a thing, but like a lot of critiques it is used a lot as a label for 'thing I dislike' rather than the proper trope in writing. For instance, while many Mary Sue's are OP, that is neither a requirement nor sufficient. OPness is an independent problem in writing that is actually a problem with the general writing in the story, not the character, as it is robbed the story of any real tension. But, because people see OP character they immediate jump on the Mary Sue label for the issue which doesn't really apply well. It should also be noted, like most any writing flaw, you can actually have a good enjoyable story despite the flaw, and in some cases because of the flaw. Many manga/anime isekai's and fantasy stories leverage this quite a bit by having a protag that is insanely OP, but there is a weird silly charm to it. The problem is generally when the flaw is recklessly used, where someone genuinely thinks they're writing something serious and thoughtful, when the flaw is robbing it of all that serious thoughtfulness. It is kinda like trying to write a mystery story where the mystery is plainly obvious from moment one. This could have been written as another type of story, like a crime investigation story and potentially worked, but as mystery it fails miserably.

I'm amused that this seems surprising to anyone. In all of Hollywood's history, WHEN HAS A MOVIE OR TV SERIES EVER LIVED UP TO THE BOOK? NEVER, That's when. Same holds true for Manga/Anime. Taken stand-alone an anime adapted from a manga may be good, exceptional even, but viewed in tandem WITH the manga, the flaws will always show. That's just the way it is. The Mona Lisa is a beautiful painting, but when is an actress or model ever going to be able to replicate that beatific smile? The interpretation of another artist's vision WILL fall short, because it does not contain the same level of emotional understanding the original artist holds for the original creation. The connection is not there.

7 seeds is my favorite manga, Basara also being in my top 5. The best way I can describe that story is of a pure lick of dystopian genius. One of the most brilliant, dark, somber works of fiction I've ever read. The way Tamura was able to develop so many characters alone is astounding, as most authors struggle to balance even five. Yet here we see the perfect example of a modern anime adaption refusing to take seriously the work of an author who made something that was (quite literally) serious, and to be taken as such. I remember finding out it was getting an anime adaptation and knowing almost immediately it would be horrible. I gave it an honest, open-hearted chance, but alas, it was so darn awful that I felt compelled to leave my first ever anime comment section post, begging for people to ignore everything about the anime and read the manga instead.

7 Seeds is truly an anime of all time. The plot was there, the background story exists, and the entire concept is definitely animated in 2D. The characters are designed and they have their own stories as well. The voice actors did a job giving voice to these characters, the story writers did a job composing the stories. However, especially, the animated studio actually animated the story into an anime, and the coloring was done, too. And when I hear the main character said "it's seedin' time", it truly reminds me that I'm watching the anime of all time. And it's sad, because it should be so much more.

I was just so confused why they were rushing the plot line when it seemed so important!!! You know the pacing is bad if someone unfamiliar with the material knows that something is off. Also, to find out that Hana is a bit of a narcissist makes so much more sense! The anime made it seem like she innately knew more, but now knowing she just thought she did gives the character so much more depth and makes me think about those scenes so differently! Netflix fumbled the bag on this one, which is a shame because it was such an amazing story (I’ve now read the manga and hold sh*t! )

Watching you speak loudly about these make me feels better and realize that even after 10 years, 7 seeds still have a high spot in my heart. Thank you again, Colleen ❤

I appreciate this video, because I didn't even know 7Seeds was a bestselling Shojo Manga or was that long (2001-17? Sheesh!) The set up was amazing though so I don't doubt it. With that being said I kind of understand why Netflix/Gonzo didn't follow this one panel by panel. Seems like alot of the build up and tension comes from simply not knowing things. Along with the fact that it's already an animation, most casual watchers lose interest in that stuff fast. If Netflix is paying to have it published they probably wanted to speed up to the exciting premises immediately to maximize the investment, Thus creating a massive shitshow. Very sad that money is usually the reason to butcher stories.

So with an adaptation like this, very few people would even give the manga a second glance. I hope it gets a different anime adaptation in the future, the one it deserves... I remember that I read the 7 Seeds manga but then stopped because it was too strong for me and some parts of it bothered me. Still, it was an amazing story! So when I saw the 7 Seeds anime on Netflix I decided to show it to my brother, since that's more his kind of story. I didn't remember the manga that much anymore, so I thought the things were in the same order as in the manga. I felt like the manga was way scarier and was surprised that it wasn't impacting me as much. There was also a part with Summer B team when I was surprised something was happening that I was sure should have happened after a different event, so I told my brother about that event that I was sure they had been cut from the anime... They did show the event in a later episode, so I spoilered my brother... But I was truly surprised it wasn't making much of an impression on me. I even got the idea that maybe the story wasn't as great as I remembered. I suppose this video explains why... They totally ruined the anime!

Imo both ways of referring to Summer B and Spring Teams have equivalent quality. In the Manga there is the suspense of not knowing at first that other teams other than Summer B exist, yes, but in the Anime you have the revelation from later that not all of the teams woke up at the same time which creates suspense.

It is kind of amazing how badly 7SEEDS was adapted. It's not like Netflix is known for featuring bad adaptations, but many of the adaptations Netflix picks that aren't guaranteed shōnen hits are generally very hit or miss. Some examples of bad adaptations/choices: Cagaster (of the Insect Cage), Levius, Last Hope (aka Unit Pandora), Japan Sinks, Ultramarine Magmell, The Way of the Househusband, Yakitori: Soldiers of Misfortune, etc. There are a decent number of good adaptations on Netflix, but their bad ones make you wonder who decided they should even be on Netflix.

Wow I did not even know 7 Seeds was a manga. 19:07 I'll neve understand why this is such a common problem. You don't even need to understand the source in material to do a decent adaptation. It was successful enough to be adapted for a reason. Literally all you need to do is the same thing the original work did. Ruining something is an extra step you must intentionally take. Sure, some changes are necessarily to accommodate a different medium, but in actual practice the overwhelming majority of adaptational changes are made out of overconfident stupidity.

A bit late algorithm but nice to know you’re collecting my data all the same. So fun fact, as an anime only the anime got me into 7Seeds, so much so that I used it in school work. I still haven’t gotten round to reading the manga yet and from what I did read I sorta preferred the anime since the ability for voice acting and moving expressions gave different tones that probably would have made me bounce off the manga completely if it was my first experience. Semimaru comes off as a far worse person in the initial manga chapters to me, whereas with the VA and movement in the anime you can tell he’s far closer to an inappropriate jerk than the actual scum of the earth. As for the points you made in this video I can complete understand and agree with some of them (for example various character moments and characterisation you bought up), although I think that some of the changes the anime made had merit and have to disagree with other points. For me, the early reveal of Summer team A was a good thing imo, as you said it created that mystery as to why they shot which although you may view as cliché and uninteresting I found interesting and was excited to see the story behind it (which I also enjoyed more getting the same experience as you did from the manga). I also didn’t feel confused by the mysteries the first episode left the viewers with, nothing felt confusing to me but rather mysterious and intriguing, however that’s just me.

The anime was ok in my book, and it got me to read the manga which is astronomically better. So it did it’s job as a commercial. I just feel if you’re a manga reader and you’re anticipating an anime adaptation you’re setting yourself up for disappointment. Because it’s not the story by one author it’s an adaptation by a team of people and the author is rarely involved. They take creative liberties and while some are phenomenal and can elevate the manga to new heights like most Shounen anime when it comes to Shojo or Seinen it’s the opposite… most of the time. With animation action scenes can be godlike but when it’s a quiet series or a story heavy one animation doesn’t really do the trick. Cutting out key elements for runtime erases the story and since they’re unsure if they’re gonna be greenlit for another season they try to jam pack as much as they can in 12 episodes. Because that’s all they are promised. All in all I don’t blame the studio for a bad adaptation. They did what they could with the limited resources and time crunch they were given. The industry is setup for 15 flops and 1-2 Golden eggs a season.

Didn't even know the manga existed before watching the anime, I think the story is really well made in the anime but its all rushed and like you said "it takes away all the suspense" it just throws every character in front of you at the beginning and some scenes could be way more emotional, when the baseball player comes in the world and everyone is getting eaten by the tiger, there is no emotion whatsoever in the animation, it gives the same feeling as watching two peoples playing chess. An emotional story like that and a empty animation 😔

When I first saw there was gonna be a 7 seeds adaptation I was so excited and told all my friends to watch it only to feel almost ashamed to have recommended it after seeing how the studio gutted everything that made it special. I hope maybe in the future we’d get a Basara adaptation worthy of its name. It is one of my top favourite mangas and I feel has the potential to overtake yona of the dawn or any other shojo, action, post apocalyptic, genre bending manga out there (legit I bet when her editor asked what genre does she want basara to be she just said EVERYTHING). I’m so sad that many people don’t give classic mangas a fair chance 😞

Hi Colleen! You should try reading Bokura no Kiseki by Natsuo Kumeta, it’s a pretty old long running josei manga about a group of modern day teens in japan realising they were all medieval citizens of the same country in their past life. It takes a lil while to get into but once everything starts making more sense it’s a really fun read! I don’t see very many people talk about the series and the fanbase is super small but it’s a good read and it’s still ongoing with 20+ vols. I like the anime. I watched it in the background while I was drawing because it had a dub, so I didn’t notice how scattered all the scenes were. But the moment ,Charlie whoever, you mentioned Arashi would have a dilemma thinking Hana could’ve been revived years prior or after they were, in addition to if she was even alive, made me immediately love the manga. Just thinking of that suspense would have made me care a bit more about them finding each other, instead of getting tired of their situation. Not to mention Hana wouldn’t have even been introduced so abruptly like that. Speaking of Hana, I haven’t a clue who Mary Sue is, but I find her extremely annoying because of how she’s pretty much portrayed as an angel. She makes no mistakes, she stands up for her beliefs, she can be the victim and she’s willing to sacrifice and leave her group because of an incurable infection. (Which irritated me, for some reason I think is because there were far better options than that. Consult your team, isolate yourself, try to find a cure than die running away when you never had to.) Although, if she was introduced as a narcissist, I might’ve actually liked her for it. At least then it would make sense for her character. Who were Chisa and the other girl again? (🥲🤦🏻‍♀️) “If this so called Chisa” was the one who was carrying Hibari and was introduced as a character with an actual background, it wouldn’t feel like Hana was the only girl in their team. (Other than Hibari, but she wasn’t even seen conversing with them, huh?) I continued the manga after the anime, but they go immediately to theirs and Hana’s reunion, which I wasn’t really interested in so I skipped. Then again, it got too tedious because surprisingly, compared to the anime, they don’t switch perspectives constantly- (Sarcasm doesn’t bode well in text.) As well as, I couldn’t even tell who was who, the manga’s art style is just confusing when you come from the anime… So I stopped trying to comprehend anything. But you’ve convinced me, I’ll read the manga. From the start, really. Like- Natsu with a family? Damn, I wanna see that, even just a glimpse. Arashi has Hana, Semimaru has his parents (Or lack of parent figures.) and childhood days, Botan has her (😭 non-existent) baby and job, makes me feel like she had a connection to people in the past too. P.S. - Excuse the long comment please, I beg of you.

From what I can tell, I think as you said the mangaka Tamura had her plot planned out, which makes it good for a reader, but maybe not helpful for television. There are certain writted books like Farenheit451 which plan ahead to be made into a movie, so it reads differently than a typical novel, which Tamura's work probably reads wayyyy better as a manga. SOO.... making it into an anime adaptation is probably tricky because writers tend to write as if they want to keep maintaining the audiences' low attention span. (aka jumping back and forth often between plots/groups). I also think it's clear the directior of the anime wasnt in touch with the mangaka much if at all to understand the pacing of the story. Even the art style looks off because it looks fairly low budget while the mangaka's work looks way more shojo. And I agree the mood of the opening is very important to a story like this, but I assume it was kinda decided before hand without much explanation. I think the biggest issue is that shojo works probably get VERY little focus compared to shonen anime. Just look at the Sailor Moon reboots. I personally HATE the reboot solely due to the animation. The plot might be more true to story, but at what cost. Ive never read 7Seeds' manga but I watched the whole show. I felt the animation was kinda sloppy with no real style (seeing the manga, it's clear there IS a style). If anything my impression was that it was trying to market this shojo manga as a shonen manga.

I tried to watch Seven Seeds and instantly noticed that the material was good. Good story, good plot, good characters, everything good was there but... -- for some strange reason which YOU helped me verbalise -- the anime never "clicked" with me. I kept thinking that the pace was bad, the animation was often annonying and that sometimes the story wandered on things that didn't need that much attention. That is a similar sensation I had with Cagaster of an Insect Cage (an insanely good story made into an anime almost unwatchable). Thank you for your comments, they helped me understand a lot that I didn't understand in the beginning.
