New research from Opportunity Insights, a Harvard-based center that studies economic opportunity, has shown the extent to which leadership roles across US society are held by graduates of selective private colleges. The research, by Harvard economist Raj Chetty and collaborators, also demonstrates that these selective colleges admit many more students from high-income families than low-income families, and that legacy preferences tend to benefit higher income families. This confluence of findings raises fundamental questions about how colleges can and should work to increase the socioeconomic diversity of their student populations - and what role that might play in increasing the diversity of America’s leaders. Are private colleges amplifying the persistence of privilege across generations, and what changes in admissions policies might help achieve greater socioeconomic representation on campus and in the halls of power across corporations, government, and society?
Join us as the Askwith Education Forum and Harvard’s Partnering in Education Research (PIER) Fellowship Program present a conversation with Chetty about his latest research. Hosted by Thomas Kane, the director of the Harvard Center for Education Policy Research (CEPR), the presentation will be Chetty’s first public discussion of this work at Harvard. The event will also feature remarks from discussants Lawrence Bobo and Susan Dynarski, before opening for audience Q&A.
