A compilation of every Group of 5 over Power 5 win from the 2023 College Football Season. In total, there was 16 such instances this season. For those that did not know, the Group of 5 consists of the AAC, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, and Sun Belt Conferences while the Power 5 consists of the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac 12, and SEC Conferences. @@doge-palthankfully it became a fluke, but at the time it was well deserved punishment for what had to be done of the worst coaching in history by a 20yr coach. And I’m an OSU alum. A USA player after the game said “they ran every play we practiced for in the order we practiced, it was like they played in slow motion.”

Memphis and Ohio both went 10-3 this season. Ohio had the #4 overall defense and Memphis had a top 15 offense in the country. Let’s not act like they’re some nobody teams. Can’t forget that ISU lost their QB1, RB1, DE1, a 4 year starting o-lineman, and TE1 less than a month before the start of the season and 20 players had the flu and were out of the Ohio game.

Big-12: 8 times (sure i’m counting Cincinnati and Houston) ACC: 5 times SEC: 2 times (the SEC wanted to demote Auburn at the time LOL) B1G: Purdue with conference realignment and the schedule changed having more head to head conference matches, this will happen less frequently now

Gotta defend my Big 12 conference here, we took in several schools that were G5 last year, they didn’t suddenly become powerhouses by changing a G to a P. In 2022 they were G5 losing to G5, and in 2023 they were largely the same teams

We were so close to seeing Alabama on this list. USF just couldn't seal the deal. Power 5 teans aren't invincible. They got a lot more talent, but if a certain team like say 2008-2011 Boise State got a chance in a playoff system, they wouldn't have gotten blown out. Put respect on the G5

The rules were much different back then. I don't think any G5 is truly going to stand a chance in the CFP unless they get to play a massivly overrated 4 loss SEC/B1G team that makes it because of the blatlant BIAS that the CFP voters have towards those conferences. When the top G5 teams play an actual top 15 P5 school, especially a top 10 P5 school they almost always get blown out. Tulane last year was a recent example of a good P5 losing, but I don't believe USC ever deserved that high of a ranking lol. They had zero defense and half their starters opted out. We saw this year what happens when the best G5 teams play against a top 10 P5 team (oregon vs liberty) and it was not pretty.

@EngineeringUSA I guess that's understandable. But people treat these teams like they literally have no purpose, and claim automatically that the players are overrated if they actually succeed. Games can become blowouts absolutely, but let's not forget that TCU made it to a national championship after beating an undefeated Michigan, only to get stomped by the insurmountable wall that was Georgia. People claimed, after that loss, they shouldn't have been in, like they didn't win in the round before. I don't think it should just be the best SEC team should get the Natty hands down every year, and with the expansion of the playoffs, players all over the country will see that they don't have to go to the same five schools to be a championship contender. Liberty gets blown out by Oregon and everyone believes that a G5 team shouldn't get a chance, that's the biggest amount of bull I've heard.

The gap between power 5 and G5 isn't as big as FBS and FCS, especially the lower level FCS. But it's still a big gap and usually only games between 8-10 win G5 teams and 2-5 win P5 times have actual upset potential. People hate that the P5 could break off but they shouldn't have all been in the same division in the first place. Yes there's borderline teams on both sides but it's the same with FBS and FCS, and FCS and D2. Still a wide gap.

well this past year there was 1 FCS over P5 upset 3 FCS over G5 upsets 15 G5 over P5 upsets in 2021, there was a whopping 12 FCS over FBS upsets 4 FCS over P5 and the rest of G5. I think it was because most of the FCS teams at the time had its seniors and grown up OLs and DLs to compete against the G5s. this next year will be the same but because of conference realignment, we will get less FCS on FBS crime
