The number of plays is down 8%, but the game time is down only 2%. They made these clock changes in the name of "player safety," but it really was just so the networks could show more commercials. Something else I noticed in a lot of games this weekend is that they would often cut off the color commentators mid-sentence to go to commercials. Ridiculous.

It it was really about player safety, they wouldn’t be increasing the amount of games players would play. The max was 13 in the 90s but next year it will be 16 or 17.

I never watch the regular time games. Commercials have always been a pain. More now. I love to watch the late games shown in the East time zone. Usually lower level teams, or even lower division. Games are more fun to watch. Commercials are not as prevalent. Schools that are never on during the day. Been my only interest in watching college football. Makes you really enjoy the game. Especially the Wed, Thursday or Friday games during the season.

Stop watching football and start watching MMA. I made the switch back in 2016 and I’ve never looked back once, honestly. And I played two years of college football myself at Morehead State. I'm an old dog and remember watching college and pro football on TV when it was broadcast over the aerial antenna. From what I understand, commercials paid for the broadcast back then so we could watch the games. Now with advent of cable, satellite and streaming TV, not only are we expected to pay for the broadcast, we're also paying to watch those BS commercials! That's double dipping, imo. That sucks! Then the sports networks have gone and snuck in even more commercials? F-DAT They've ruined football in my eyes. 🤬 I'm now getting my footbal viewing pleasure from YT highlight videos since the commercials are cut out! 😞

@@chuckdawg2799 The NCAA never existed for player safety. From day one the NCAA existed as device to validate the notion that collegiate sports was viable and wasn't exploitation of athletes, such as in the invention of the term "student athlete". This allowed school to not have to consider the players to be what they have always been - employees. Schools could then take advantage of the labor provided by those athletes that would generate millions of dollars for schools that those athletes were never intended to receive. The NCAA exists for the benefit schools themselves (at least their athletic departments) as a body to maintain the cash cow. That's all it was ever even intended to be. Even the NLI does nothing to actually stop this, only existing as a workaround to the system to provide sources of income that were once considered illegal.

My family held season tickets for our local U's inaugural football seasons. For the first few years, their games weren't televised / streamed. The games lasted about 90 minutes in total. It was fun to go tailgate, watch the game, and get home at a reasonable time. We saw their first everything. TD, Win, home loss, field goal, etc... it was great. Then their games were being televised on the ESPN streaming service after they passed the probationary period and became full conference members. The games started taking 3.5 hours, and worse, because the big state team is vastly more popular (like a religion here), the local U scheduled many games on Thursday nights. No more tailgating. Getting home at 11:00pm on a work night. Plus the U raised the ticket prices, so we noped out. Commercials were a big part of the buzz kill because at least for NFL teams / big colleges, they have entertaining things lined up during commercial breaks. Not here. You just got to watch everyone standing around.

I still love sports but prefer participating instead of watching. I get much more out of it, emotionally, socially and physically without the waste of time. I realized how unproductive it is to invest emotional energy into a team that you have absolutely no control over. For me, it only created useless frustration. When participating in sport, even as a coach or trainer, I feel much greater satisfaction (win or lose) in the outcome of the contest. It's hard for me to believe how addicted I was when looking back on my days of sitting for hours on Saturdays and Sundays, watching events that are purposely designed to promote an artificial sense of stress and rivalry.

They have been HORRIBLE, exploiting athletes and whoring out to TV at every possible opportunity. The athletes and coaches of the revenue sports (football and basketball) have no connection with, or loyalty towards, the schools. The athletes are not students, or, now, amateurs. The commercials are NOT random. They are as they have always been. After scores, after kick-offs, during timeouts, during injury timeouts, etc. The problem is now the commercial breaks are longer than they used to be and that's saying something. I quit following NCAA football when they put the National Championship game on cable tv which restricted the availability to subscribers only. They made a demographic decision knowing that non-subscribers are not the juiciest group for advertisers across all media and that chucking us under the bus would be the best decision for ROI. The decision to do so demonstrates that the first and only consideration for this mission-drifted, bloated organization is revenue. In the intervening years it has only gotten worse because the NCAA is run like a business that considers itself to be failing if the revenue totals don't increase each year. What I don't understand is people who had over confiscatory prices for tickets to see the game in the stadium. How can they not feel like chumps sitting there twiddling their thumbs while endless commercials are played to the TV audience who can at least get up and put their nachos in the microwave. And let's not even talk about the larcenous prices for the same nachos at the refreshment bar which adds insult to injury for the already fleeced and badly used sports fans.

I was at a HIGH SCHOOL game that was broadcast by the local Sinclair affiliate (which was a FOX channel but since they were showing WWE the game was aired on Channel 1250) and they were clearly trying to fill the 3 hour window they had for the game in how they coordinated commercials. The big problem with football is the "red hat" official who is technically called the Timeout Coordinator. You need to have it written in the NCAA rulebook that the game can only be stopped at certain points similar to basketball for commercials, and for a specific length. None of this "let's have the guy in the red hat talk to somebody in the production van on how much they want".

Unfortunately it's not gonna get better because these networks have already signed contracts for the season - advertisers, like McDonalds, Progressive, Aflac, etc have already paid networks the required millions to show their ads. Now I don't know contract specifics, but from an accounting point of view, companies cannot record revenue from advertising campaigns - there's no direct cash inflow associated with an ad campaign. All advertising is recorded as an expense. However, companies don't just blindly throw money at advertising campaigns in the hopes it'll generate sales. There's an amalgam of analytics and data these companies use to determine how much exposure an ad will receive and how likely a specific ad campaign will lead to sales. All this is factored into the contracts they signed already. Reducing the amount of commercials being shown reduces exposure which the companies will not agree to. Hell, every single camera shot has product placement. The Offensive Coordinator booth camera from one game last week had Coca Cola bottle placement within camera shot. They're not even drinking it. It's just for product placement. The PAT and Field Goal Net has a fucking ad. There are Green Screen Ads generated the same way as the line of scrimmage and 1st down markers. Advertising will definitely not go away any time soon. The fans will just have to suffer - or live under rocks all weekend until a worthy youtuber can upload commercial free broadcasts after the airing. (we can only hope?)

And asked (condescendingly), “why’s that?” I explained that everything is decided by TV, such as when the games are played, the length of the commercial breaks, that it’s all up to conference TV contract, so we sitting in the stands are important to who controls everything-television-then we should be paid as extras. After all, we’re just extras in their big TV productions. Turns out to be true.

At first, I actually liked the rule change because I thought it would make the games go by a little bit quicker. The issue I had wasn’t necessarily with the time it took to play a game, but the TV networks would schedule every game to kick off 3 1/2 hours after the one before it regardless of if the game was done or not, so I thought reducing the number of clock stoppages would mean that the first game will get done before the kick off of the next game and you wouldn’t miss the beginning of the next game anymore. This has not happened. All that’s happened is there are fewer plays on the field and just more random spots where they’re finding time to insert commercial brakes That were never there before. It has not made the game one second shorter. The problem is everyone, like me, is absolutely obsessed with college football and won’t stop watching. The only way we will get the rule changed back to what it was before or a solution to the commercials issue is if there is a nationwide unified boycott against watching the games on a scale where the networks would actually lose money, and we all know that will not happen.

When I started watching soccer it was liberating. You'll get some ads in the pregame. Then for the next 45-50 minutes: 0 ads, just the game. Then there's a good amount of ads during halftime, but I usually find something else to do during the interval anyway so it's no problem. Then it's another 50 or so minutes of no ads for the 2nd half. The debate about the game itself being boring to the casual American is another discussion, but I just wanted to point out how I much rather prefer to watch a game that has as little stoppages as possible, compared to ad after ad after ad with CFB.

as a brazilian, I'm always curious how the US never really developed association football/soccer culture. It is the most played sport until age 16 I think (saw something like this once). You exposed the argument that might win fans over: the lack of ads. They might say it bores, but there are no ads when the game is being good to cut momentum. I'll explose my experience as a brazilian: we have ads during the game. But they are like 10 to 15 seconds each (tops) and always happen when the game allows to. Like a bad shot. And are always side by side with the game. And since you can create a chance in five seconds, they cut to the game full screen if an opportunity starts to build. So there isn't much of a problem with the ads themselves

I noticed this at the Georgia/UT-Martin game, which was on ESPN+. Every time there was an injury, it didn't matter the severity, ESPN went to a 3-minute commercial break. In every instance, the player was back to their feet walking back to the sidelines less than a minute after going down. The players in question clearly had cramps or light sprains. That happened about 10 times, so they added around 30 minutes to the overall game time. This all gave the games I watched Saturday a really odd pace. It felt like no one could capitalize on momentum, if they could even generate it. I agree with your last points, this is not the time to introduce more commercials. Conference realignment and the inflated playoff have fans furious. Diehard fans are questioning how much longer they're going to be invested, while more casual fans will quickly find something else to watch. The TV stations are just poking the bear.

I was at the Marshall v Albany game. It certainly was not broadcasted nationwide. The first half took over two hours, and ended 3-0. We just sat there for most of it, watching the same guy walk onto the field every other play with a two minute timer on a stick. It was just aggravating.

I was watching this about to comment how this is 100% due to the conferences having these gazillion dollar TV deals. But then you mentioned it. Thank goodness for DVR. Also, I started the habit a few years ago of pausing the game and waiting a half hour or so before resuming watching it. That way I can skip the commercials. This TV deal situation also leads to frustration for fans because certain networks (ESPN) effectively have a monopoly on an entire conference’s games (SEC). If you want to watch SEC football, you pretty much have to subscribe to ESPN. It sucks.

Do commercials even work? I mean, I know they do but am I the only one that actively avoids products if I see their commercial more than once during a game or show? I mute the TV or turn my attention elsewhere. I’m getting really sick of companies squeezing profit out of normal people. Every nickel, dime, and penny it seems needs to be made. I’m starting to lose it

I work in TV broadcasting (Technical Director). The reason you see "frontloading" of commercials isn't necessarily as nefarious as you are making it sound. The general flow of a broadcast is the higher-ups of the network sell/decide the number of commercial breaks in conjunction with the conference and other parties involved. Once they have that number of ads/sponsored elements/breaks, they give those requirements to the producer of the game, who then is tasked with fitting it all into the game time. So with X number of commercials to hit within a QTR, the producer will decide when a stoppage in the game will allow for a break. But, there are restrictions. USUALLY, you can't take a break just whenever during a drive. You can't stop the momentum of a drive or just any time that would be detrimental to the teams. So, with those restrictions, along with the clock moving faster than normal, that producer is going to try to get all their breaks out of the way whenever they can. They get in trouble if they don't hit all their breaks, so if they have a timeout and choose not to go to break, then the clock runs out and they didn't hit one of their breaks, its not good for them. So that's why you usually see them more at the beginning of a QTR rather than later. Trust me, everyone on the broadcast crew hates sponsored things because we can't seem to fit anything about actual game into the broadcast. Basketball is nice because it IS so structured and everyone knows exactly when a break will happen. Plus, the producer doesn't have to worry if they will be able to get that last stoppage before time runs out to take a break. Hopefully that all made sense.

I think most people would just rather watch the players or listen to commentators during breaks or setups. Whether people believe that an uptick in commercials is nefarious or not is a moot point. There should just be less of them, at the end of the day.

Honestly, this is the downside to the NIL system (although i support NIL and personally benefitted from it). The game is going to get more and more commercialized bc these schools, boosters, and companies are under pressure not to keep making money, but to keep *increasing* how much money they make. I fear football is going to go the way of baseball in the future, as slow moving sports with alot of commercial breaks lose cultural relevance in favor of more "continuous action" sports like basketball and F1.

I felt the same way last season before the new rule was in effect. College football is the only 'live' TV I ever watch, and I have ad blockers for everything else I consume. Sitting through a game last weekend was insufferable. Commercials are a blight upon our entire society, and far too much money gets thrown around from marketing departments just to distract us from the things we care about. It's far past time coaches, TV execs, marketers, and athletes all get paid WAY less so we can enjoy entertainment without being bombarded with all the bs. Besides, half of all commercials are just a vehicle to show how 'diverse' they want every facet of reality to be. It's all repulsive.

There’s a popular theory that soccer isn’t popular in the states because it is less profitable for tv networks to broadcast due to the lack of advertising revenue. Realistically there is a 15 minute window you have to show all the commercials (plus maybe 10 minutes before and after the game) you want for a 120 min time slot on that channel. I’m so glad MLS is making a partnership with Apple TV.

Pretty much. The closest thing is the occasional read whenever there's a break. For instance, before a corner kick. And even then, it's very brief. Although that may partly explain why soccer teams wear sponsors on their uniforms since the 80s. Ironically even with the breaks that allow for ads, the NBA now allows sponsors on team jerseys. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if the NFL and even college teams start sporting sponsors too. And it'd be Alanis Morrisette level of ironic if colleges allow Draft Kings, Fan Duel or some other sports betting company on their uniforms. It sounds ridiculous now but it could damn well happen. And oddly enough, the UFC, the one sports entity that should allow their athletes to wear sponsors does the complete opposite.

The combination of making the game no longer even remotely amateur, which will really just widen the gaps between big and little schools, and killing entire conferences, has already killed College football for me completely. Knowing that if i tuned in I would get nothing but commercials... I'll probably not tune into a game this year. It was the sport I used to look forward to the most, but after buying my Phil Steele magazine to read about every single team like I do every year... I opened it, thumbed through a few pages, and realized... I don't care about this shit anymore. So fuckit.
