The problem for attendance is these bowl games need to recognize that they're just that, *bowl* games, not the CFP. It makes no sense for an exhibition game halfway across the country from the schools involved to expect 60-70k people to pay over $100 to watch a game with no implications from the upper deck. Add in the cost of travel and getting a hotel room during the holidays, might as well watch from home.

@bsmitley9 ай бұрын
Obviously they've got to change the portal timing to help with some of this. But if you really want to get all these teams to try, there needs to be something that states NIL deals are only rewarded via playing in a bowl game (if applicable). If they want paid, make them play. If they want to be treated like pros, then get on the field and contribute to earn that collective money. That will solve all the bowl issues, outside of the ones declaring for the draft (which I'm okay with if you're actually going to go and not back out).
@fanman719 ай бұрын
This always happens in the NY6 game that has the G5 team. Same as what happened last year with USC vs Tulane in the Cotton Bowl. I was at the PSU vs. Memphis game & it really does disincentivize the P5 team/fans from going to the game as well as low turnout for minor teams. Just an FYI, PSU had 4 opt outs, including a 1st Team AA OL, a All American DE & both All B1G CB's. On top of that the players that declared but played in the game were pulled from the game in the 2H (when halftime was 17-20), including an All B1G LB, another All B1G DB & an All B1G OG, so PSU wasn't anywhere close to playing all their players. Opt outs suck.

@huskerchuck92129 ай бұрын
The 12-team playoff changes things. Those games will be meaningful, and winning your conference (for the Power 4) results in a bye. The 4 quarterfinal bowl games will also be meaningful. As for the rest of the bowl games, they are going to be essentially meaningless for all teams involved. These games will be a chance to try out new players or players at new positions looking ahead to the following season. The gap in time at the end of the regular season and the bowl would give teams time to try things in the bowl game.

@GrizrazRex9 ай бұрын
They are going to have to set the B1G and SEC title games as first-round action within the 12-team CFP. That's 4 spots. Put the auto-bids in place for the B12 and ACC, or include those conference title games as first-rounders too. That would be 8 spots of a 12-team bracket, leaving room for at-large bids and a G5 auto-bid. The problem with this model is the non-conference championship game participant *cough* Ohio State this season *cough* getting an easier path to a natty. So there will probably be a future elimination of conference title games. The top conferences will simply get 2 auto-bids (the would-be championship game participants), to be placed in separate brackets. The municipal governments of Indy and the ATL may protest, but the days of an early December game there for a conference crown are likely numbered. Notice that I did not mention Charlotte or the DFW. Those conference title sites would be likely victims of realignment, but also first-round playoff sites. The bowls must be reconfigured, and lessened, but there are too many groups of guys in funny colored blazers with fiefdoms to protect. When the B1G and SEC eventually break away from the NCAA in football to form MCF, we may see a new championship tier of the rump FBS take shape, with some of the lesser bowls becoming playoff sites. It is patently obvious where the aforementioned is all heading. It is just a matter of who figuratively pulls the next Jenga stick or pushes the first domino. All eyes on the possible ending of the ACC, and which schools end up where. That's the one everyone is pointing to. I shall point to another possibility: What happens when the Disney fiscal situation turns bad enough that ESPN cannot guarantee the payouts? Will that be the precipitating moment for the arrival of MCF? Will Fox take the lead in making that happen, thus becoming the de facto home of CFB, including the CFP? Picture the Power 4 as a 4-legged stool with only 2 of the legs having feet. It's a wobbly stool that needs fixing. That's CFB right now.
@commodorezero9 ай бұрын
Conference title games should end but they will not due to greed the empahsis on being a conference champion is partially being done to prop these games up. It also props up the conferences and because of that I don't see the fall of any other conferences impending. Everyones champ makes the playoff and because of this all the major conferences have an inherent value they did not have before. The Pac 12 might even survive. The ACC will just be very very bad without FSU, Clemson and UNC. The worst case scenario of what that could look like is Atlantic Hockey in Hockey where they just never have at large bids.
@jtjr269 ай бұрын
I think the Group of 5 and the lower-end programs in the new Power 4 are going to essentially be a feeder system for the top-end programs. @GR-bn3xj9 ай бұрын
The charity team that has routinely beaten their top P5 team in bowl games in the past? The reason for giving them the spot is to keep a few million fans involved in college football. If you eliminate the G5, you eliminate over 60 teams and their fan bases from watching like they do now. They have to have that small sliver of hope to keep watching in the numbers they do. Individually, they may not have a huge fan base, but collectively it's a lot of eyeballs to lose, especially when all of this has been done bc of huge TV contracts. Sometimes you have to do what's best for the health of all of college football and look past the short term goals of an individual conference, other wise, their greed will make them implode. Also remember the argument all the non expansion people had too, if you aren't top 11, are you really in a spot to complain you didn't get in? Yes, it is a bit of charity, but every now and then these G5 teams can surprise someone, and it makes for a good story. As long as they aren't annoying like UCF 2017. Besides, if it is so easy, the big conferences should love it, bc it should be an easy win for them.

In addition, they've turned into boring and meaningless exhibition games. I firmly believe that once a 12 team (or more) playoff system is instituted, bowl games will go the way of the dodo. Let’s create another division to find a Group of 5+ National Champion for Football. CUSA, AAC, MAC, MWC, SunBelt, SWAC, MVC, MEAC, Ivy, etc. Conference Champs go to a playoff.

The Bread Crumb Conference is akin to a group of 5 now.

Gee, it's almost like back in the day before we had a single elimination tournament it was almost better.

Start times usually cater towards the East Coast… bout time a time is favorable for us West Coast people

I was at the fiesta bowl, and yeah, it was definitely weird to say the least, fun, but weird.

Honestly, they should had created a playoff system on conference champions. I think that would had given a fair shot to all power and group schools. Seems that is definitely not happening with all this conference craziness. Sad time we live in for this sport.
@1965Grit9 ай бұрын
I have said that for years, the CFP should be based on Conference championships, everyone else is out.
@kevinbond89669 ай бұрын
90% of the best teams play in 2 conferences. How is that fair to the superior teams?
@1965Grit9 ай бұрын
@@kevinbond8966, simple, if they want in, win their conference championship.
@kevinbond89669 ай бұрын
@@1965Grit So liberty would be in the playoff but not Oregon? Didn't they just play? How did that go? Wouldn't your playoff just result in the winner of the SEC vs the winner of the Big 10 literally every single year?
@1965Grit9 ай бұрын
@kevinbond8966 ,yes, that could be the case at first, but eventually, I believe that some of the players that the SEC and Big 10 normally get would possibly see an opportunity at some of the other schools and it might start to equalize some of the dominant recruiting issues that exist in college football.

The Sugar Bowl has always been played at that time.

The start times and days of playoff games are absolute garbage. For those of us on the west coast, we basically have to miss the first 3 quarters of the game or the entire game (depending on what time you get out of work) because it starts at 4:30pm PST. I work 12 hours every day so I don’t get out of work until 8-8:30 and it takes 30 minutes to get home. Game’s over by that time because some ducking genius decided to put the Super Bowl of College Football on a fucking Monday.
@Maddog2020RH9 ай бұрын
Big Time College Football used to be the best sport around. The "Transfer portal", "Opt-Outs", "NIL" and money in general have definitely damaged it to the point where it's now "Minor League Football" and I really don't care for it that much. Hopefully the NCAA can get things under control for the future of the sport. Otherwise I guess I'll just start watching D2, D3 and HS where the players are playing for the love of the game...
@mavrick60889 ай бұрын
That's 1 stadium lol. The rest were full but that is Oregon vs Liberty dude,! They could not have given Oregon a more pathetic matchup and not even Oregon fans wanted to see that blowout even though it was going to be in there favor. Bowl games need good matchups to draw ticket sales

I would like to see an FCS 24 type team CFB playoff but it is unlikely. So instead, a NIT type invitational for 24 teams, that would be 36 teams and 34 post seasons games.

Thank the BCS & CFP for destroying the magic of bowl games. Allowing teams that don’t even win their division (looking at you Alabama, 2017) to make the playoff.
@binxbolling9 ай бұрын
The schools get paid big, and the networks sell mucho adds. The gate money is negligible in bowl games.
@Avoicecyringinthesuburbs9 ай бұрын
Wouldn't schools with good teams make so much more money by advancing through a large playoff, rather than just one bowl game?

It’s college football. How many games in a season is too many?

@mavrick60889 ай бұрын
Dude do you even know what your talking about? Michigan brought in a 5 star lol from Stanford. A center from Stanford who was considered in like the top 5 best centers in college. A starting tackle from Arizona State that was a 3 year captain and a stud from northwestern this year so I'd not really consider those smaller schools per say nor were these kids low star recruits in highschool. You made it sound like they went to Utah state and pulled out a 3 star kid

Why was Liberty in this game?
@shaunmolamola99239 ай бұрын
FSU did not lose by 60 because of opt outs. Georgia would have steamrolled the playoff. They just didn’t show up in the SEC championship.
@dying-breed9 ай бұрын
😂 Kirby actually said his self FSU did not have their full arsenal hence it would have been a different game.
@RobertDetert9 ай бұрын
Except for the 2 playoff games all of the other bowl games are meaningless exhibition games. With the injuries the transfers and the the opt outs you can't blame the fans for not showing up.
@jasonc06049 ай бұрын
The bowl system has been dying for years. The CFP and NIL will kill it off completely. Might as well expand the CFP to 24 or 30, reduce the regular season by one game, and eliminate the meaningless bowl games outside of being sites for earlier round CFP games.
