The problem isn't in the format. The problem is that the games are stretched out too much and that they aren't on network television.

Right?! The playoffs have lost all momentum cuz they are too spread out. It’s like with the NBA when they have a whole week between the conference finals and Nba finals.

Bama Michigan was the Rose bowl, on new years day with football lead in. Orange bowl semi final this year was a Thursday night at 7:30 Eastern. Scheduling had everything to do with it. In fact, this year Rose Bowl only had 3 million fewer viewers for a quarterfinal game. Ditch the conference championship games and start the playoffs that week. Semifinals would be on new years day, finals a week later before NFL playoffs.

Too many damn Ad breaks, stretching a 60 minutes game to almost 4 hours is ridiculous. There's a commercial break after what every 3 plays? And I'm a Buckeye fan and have trouble watching (I do of course)...

It’s amazing how wrong everyone is, the reason the viewership is down is because the games are on ESPN. The only way to watch ESPN is to pay for the most expensive streaming options, people do not want to pay $80 a month for one channel. It’s the same problem the NBA is having, TV greed.

To add to some of the points already made in the comments, the Michigan-Alabama semi-final was also the Rose Bowl. Even people who don't watch college football tune into the Rose Bowl. A more apt comparison would be the OSU-Oregon Rose Bowl game that still saw a drop in 17% YOY. Most likely because Alabama and Michigan are two of the largest brands in sports. Oregon, even though it's Nike's baby, still doesn't have the pull that Alabama and Michigan has. The Notre Dame-Penn State trails all of the games mentioned above because Penn State only has a regional fanbase at best. This is very basic analysis. The good news is because of the expanded format, overall viewership of the playoffs is up just purely due to having more games. The games should really play on both ABC if Disney wants to increase per game viewership. I have no idea why they insist on keeping these games off of ABC. I see that the Championship is on ESPN as well.
@romanmoronie

No mystery. The games are on Disney/ESPN. There are a number of us that know the score on Disney and wouldn't give Disney the sweat off a desert donkeys balls let alone a dime in revenue. Not even indirectly through an overpriced cable subscription. If a game is that important, and its not, there's radio.

So this is what I think it is and why. It’s mostly what Blain said besides the formatting. It’s the timing of the games along with impacting the NFL. They need to start the playoff bowl games sooner and end by the 1st week of January. With the CF championship game the 2nd week. As for the SEC and Big 10 having more eyeballs to watch I would say it’s more of Branding. You can’t say if a big school from another confrece like FSU, Miami etc would get a lot of views as well.

The campus environments are what differentiates college football. Having so many games outside of them is a detriment. Only the Rose Bowl among the traditional bowls really has much drawing power anymore, and even that is weakening with the collapse of the Pac-12.

CFB feels like the NFL with no rules. Yes it’s more balanced and not SEC top heavy; but the transfer portal is out of control, no salary caps, and people having unrealistic expectations of coaches. I think Bama did pretty okay this year but everyone is always disappointed. OSU could win it all Monday but since they lost to Michigan, nothing else matters
@herbconner8066
@herbconner8066 11 сағат бұрын
The timing is the issue. The Playoffs need to start the week after the Conference championship is decided. and continue every weekend after that. The second weekend needs to be hosted by the higher seed, as well. The bowls can either stick to their precious traditions or move dates to accommodate weekend games, as the final 4 needs to be on the first Saturday in January. I'm not fond of the Monday night finale. Some of us have to work on Tuesday. But, it needs to be done the second weekend in January. Other issues: The seeding needs to be the seeding, and SoS needs to be a heavy part of that formula.

Could you guys attempt to educate yourself before you ask rhetorical questions? There is a HUGE difference in having a January 1st semi-final when everybody is out of school and off from work sitting around with family and friends, and having a Thursday Jan 9th, we're back to the grind at work and school, and have work and school the next day...semi game. Sometimes you guys are complete...fill the blanks.

The problem is you’re systematically removing everything that makes college football unique and separate from the NFL, and when given the choice of essentially two professional leagues, why watch the less talented one? NIL, “The Portal,” and the 12-team playoff incentivize programs to plan and operate in the short-term and to disregard tradition and development. The blatant example of this is Ohio State 2024. When college football was college football and not a semi-pro league designed to make TV barons wealthy at any and all costs, losing to Oregon and Michigan would have eliminated them from the any consideration of a national championship. Now, and you’re seeing this in real time, the younger, media-enthralled fans, don’t care about losing to Oregon, losing at home to Michigan, or not even playing in, much less winning the Big10 conference. They’re all saying, “If we win the National Championship, nothing else matters.” So if you’re a coach vying to get your team to the top, you’re incentivized to disregard what used to matter: 1). Why would I care about the character of any kid I’m recruiting; I can’t count on him being around regardless, so hire for the current season and don’t worry about it. 2). Why should I care about my rivalry game, when I can rest my banged up guys for my playoff run instead? 3). It’s much more important that I have sales and marketing chops as a coach than the ability to develop and coach. And in the same way I can’t trust players to stick around in my program, they can’t trust me not to replace them if someone better happens to hop in the portal in the spring. 4). I used to understand that college football had a long, storied history of young adult men competing, developing themselves in mind and body as people, with some having the talent to go on to the NFL. Now, they’re employees and I’m paying that bastard 6 or 7 figures to catch that pass, so he damn well better catch it. Much could be done to fix these issues, but they won’t be because the network execs, media bobbleheads, and all the lawyers in between are making too much money to care about it.

I totally agree about the Matthew Stafford play. There has got to be a standard set that stupid crap like that is not accepted in the game. Should’ve been ruled a fumble bc clearly he had no control of the situation. Who’s to say he wasn’t losing his grip on the ball and just thought to fling it to look like a pass? Absolutely absurd play. These types of plays brings down the sport imo.

Just facts - economics intro - If demand is up, producing more of a good reduces the cost. Damand is not up for CFB, the marketing is incredibly oversaturated, meaning too many marketers of CFB are trying to sell it. Ratings will be down automatically based on the nature of too many networks trying to market the pie. CFB has also lost it's image, what made it great. Marketers and heads of conferences have destroyed it.

There are several factors at play for the decline of viewers with the playoffs. More games (12 team playoff) means a longer, more drawn-out stretch of football where not every game needs to be watched or may only appeal to fans of those teams. In the 4-team playoff there are fewer games to watch (3) and you can bring closure to CFB before the NFL playoffs really kick in. This brings be to the next issue. After January 1 most people shift to the NFL playoffs. College football needs to push all of this back so the most meaningful playoff games are played up to and on January 1. The semifinals should be on January 1. The fact that they took place a week after definitely hurts. Even with the popularity in the Southeast being considered, a game between Notre Dame and Penn State should draw big ratings. Ohio State and Texas should draw big rating. These are massive schools with huge fans bases and alumni. Had those games been played January 1 I think the ratings would have been better. The NFL rules come that second weekend of January. You can't compete with that. Another factor that will have to be studied here is this: the 12-team playoff is fun and I like it, but it became clear early on in this tournament that Ohio State woke up and was likely going to beat most teams...and maybe even Notre Dame this coming Monday. After the Tennessee beat down and even more after the Oregon beat down I think a lot of fans tuned out. Especially in the Southeast because Texas does not resonate with SEC fans -- at least not yet -- as a true SEC team. They still feel like a Southwest team that should be in the Big 12. So I do think you are correct that many SEC fans, and ACC fans watched some of the tournament and then tuned out. Now college football has always been a regionalized sport. So this is further evidence that things have to be pushed back to having the semifinals on January 1. And to be honest, this is what happens in the men's basketball tournament. Ratings are good when there are 64 teams in the field, and then 32. Come the Sweet 16 they go down some but that's still a great weekend. Come the Elite 8 and Final Four ratings go down more. Why? Because less teams are in the field and people lose interest if they do not have teams they care about. The tournament is longer and some people will get exhausted trying to keep up with all the games and then eventually as brackets are busted and their teams are gone they lose interest. Sure, the junkies will watch, but most fans move on. College football needs to make some changes to the 12-team playoff. The big one, IMO, is I think it is time to cut one game from the regular season and go back to an 11-game season. That's more than enough games for college athletes. Get rid of conference championship games. I know they make money, but if you want fans to travel to playoff games and if you really want the regular season to matter then get rid of the conference championship game. Have a true regular season champ. If there is a tie, then great. This gives you a 2-week windows in which to begin the playoff, even if it expands to 16, and you should be able to have the semifinals on January 1. There are other things that need to change with the playoff, but these basic things would allow CFB to get most of the playoff in before or on January 1, with only the title game on the second weekend of January.

The 2006 Rose Bowl between Texas and USC had 35.6 million viewers, making it the most-watched college football game in U.S. television history. The game was also the highest-rated BCS game in TV history, with 21.7% of households watching it. It was broadcast on ABC. The Thursday and Friday night game slots combined with the fact that neither of these games are New Year’s Day games (a huge tv watching day) had a much bigger impact on viewership than the silly “nobody from the SEC was represented” argument. Sure, Saban cs harbaugh is an epic matchup which drew a lot more attention than most other teams, but it’s also a game played at the rose bowl in the most attractive time-slot of the year. Don’t delude yourself with sec silly thinking.

College football is slipping in quality because of the portal and NIL for one thing, second the games are not free to watch and prices are so stupid expensive, and third exactly what Blain said. 1. Accessibility Either the CFP needs to give games to cable TV networks or ESPN needs to license these games to cable TV networks. 2. Calendar More rounds means the playoffs need to start sooner. Jan. 20 is way too late for the CFB season. The playoff schedule should be as follows: - Last weekend of Nov. = Last week of reg season - First weekend of Dec. = Conf. champs - Following week = start of playoff (incentivizes winning conference to receive a bye) - First 3 rounds of playoff on Fridays/Saturdays (no 10-day breaks) - Natty on a Monday (10-day break for the significance of the game)

I really think it’s just because 12 teams waters down the viewing experience. With 4 teams it was more intense and was pitting the 4 best teams against each other and it just made for better viewing. Idk maybe it’s something else but the playoffs just don’t feel as special anymore.

I never played football and I can say definitively that the original call was the MOST correct on the fumble. It was a fumble. The deferment to the offense has gone way too far. The rules for roughing the passer, defenseless player, targeting are sucking all of the joy out of the game. I say 1) if it is impossible for the quarterback to see the receiver, 2) the ball does not travel past the line of scrimmage and 3) the pass is NOT over-hand then it is a fumble or intentional grounding. The one thing it is not is an incomplete pass. If that is the case then ANY time ANY player does that in the future (running back/receiver/quarterback reaching out and "drops the ball") then it is an illegal forward pass and they are penalized 15 yards and loss of down. That call was BS and I am not even a Vikings fan. As for the 12 team playoff, I disagree that the format is flawed in either number of teams or selection. I will agree that the calendar is a problem. No matter how many teams are in the playoffs (8, 12, 16) the semi-finals need to be done by the last weekend in Dec or Jan 1. So 16 teams -> 8 -> 4 -> 2 is 4 weeks, that means this past year the first round would have needed to be played on Dec 14, the second on the 21, the third on the 28th OR the 1st. Then the championship game happens on the 10th. If that puts championship Saturday on the 7th or the Nov 30th, so be it. That said, I would prefer that the playoff format was 16 teams not 12. Teams getting a buy just feels wrong, especially when the buys are all conference champions, since it is OBVIOUS some conferences are more competitive than others.

Here’s the problem with the argument. The cotton bowl was the most viewed cotton bowl of all time. Comparing the orange bowl to the rose bowl is also dumb. Comparing it to the last semifinal orange bowl shows viewership was pretty even. In fact, the main reason it was down is probably more likely due to not having the games back to back on a national holiday. Splitting them into 2 nights is dumb.

I had been a college football fan and season ticket holder for 30+ years. All the changes to college football in the last 5 years have made CF far worse for fans. NIL money has steered the best players to the teams with the most money. The transfer portal has ruined team continuity and loyalty - the quality of play has dropped drastically at the beginning of each season when the carpet baggers are coming up to speed in a new system. The TV networks pick ridiculous kickoff times that are extremely inconvenient to the fans that travel to the games, if you watch the games on TV you might have to subscribe to some crappy streaming service just to see the games, and the games are stretched out with commercial breaks that can, at times, ruin momentum. Finally, the conference realignments have been ridiculous - making the student athletes travel far more than before, play worse in games that require long travel/time zone differences, and play against more unfamiliar opponents. I'm dropping my season tickets this year, and will refuse to watch any game that is on TV live - I record them and skip the commercials. The problem is the NCAA has allowed greed to ruin CF.

There’s 1000’s of college teams why it was ever just two teams I’ll never know, people pay thousands of dollars for this crap could at least make worth their while hey sometimes teams have to show up and SMU/boise state had their chances if you watched the games those teams shot themselves in the foot

The fact is a that it’s on ESPN!!! Not that the SEC wasn’t in…17.8 million is a LOT of people for the SEC not to be in.

You have a whole conference of fans that it's teams are supposed to be the standard of football and are not. And they drink all the Kool Aid of why it's flawed. So viewership is down. When Ohio State lost to Michigan... I did not look at anything for a week, read no articles, etc... The collective letdown is real! No to mention the social media pounding you will take... you are liable not to tune in anymore.

As a fan. This season has taken the most of my Fandom. Transfer portal during the playoffs is stupid. Recruiting has lost its luster because of transfer portal going at the same time. NFL spreads it out over a year. College football better if they don't want to keep losing fans. NIL needs a cap. It's the wild west right now. Before long you will have the NBA model. Which definitely isn't as popular as it once was. Very disappointed in this season.

No.... SEC really only cares about their team and their confidence that's all, they don't love college football, just the team, when are y'all gonna start caring about the sport and the kids on the field and not about how it makes you feel, nobody cares

It's a watered down product. With more playoff games, there will be more upsets, and ultimately an inferior champion.

Ya’ll are idiots. ND is the most popular team in the nation and it’s not close. The semi finals game was rescheduled and botched. The game’s kickoff got moved and announced multiple times my family didn’t even know when it was and we are big fans. Only reason any fans watched was because of ND! I have family that are PSU fans, they did NOT even watch the game.

Most popular is very subjective. Michigan and Ohio State have far more alumni. Mention ND overseas and especially in Europe and they only think of the church and don’t even know about the football team. Michigan is probably better know internationally and as well know nationally as ND. Blame the helmets 😂. ND and Michigan do have the best fight songs.

I love that ESPN has the rights to the SEC and 🤡 like this hate everything Disney but it’s ESPN propaganda that makes their beloved SEC so great.

I quit watching because everybody knows it's the same teams every year. This year was an anomaly, but you still have OSU there. It's become. The elite big shots will always win and everyone else is irrelevant. Truly sad.

They definitely need to fix the seeding but all in all it’s NIL it’s the portal that’s what’s going to eventually kill the sport. I’m surprised that viewership isn’t way way way down, but it’s going to happen. You can count on it. Nobody I know that used to love college football loves it how they did five years ago. It’s all about the money and once it becomes that nobody cares that’s what we have with the NFL so whatever I don’t even care anymore college football was the last thing left and now it’s also corrupt and will disintegrate like the rest of sports is doing.
