Yes. Thomas Sowell is about to turn 93 on June 30, 2023. His point is that, despite the disadvantages of being black in his time, he had opportunities due to good schools that are lacking today. He also benefited from being surrounded by loving adults. Many kids today are raised in single parent households and this is a suboptimal circumstance for positive life chances. Couple that with the victim mentality inculcated in many urban blacks, especially, and you have a recipe for underperformance and underachievement.

My family has had 88% hard times my entire life. Our parents are gone now, but taught us to not break the law (even though we grew up with drugs as part of our life we had to deal with), treat people with respect, and be kind until pushed. Some people(all races) use a bad past as an excuse to do bad and/or stupid things.

You have it right, young man, realizing that focusing on the opportunities rather than the past will produce personal progress. Just after you said that Sowell said the same thing. Good job.

He spent his early years in North Carolina. No electricity so no air conditioning, no fridge, no heater. Probably a wood stove and a outhouse. Such were the times. He was sent to family in New York when he was still young. He was a member of Reagans Economic Policy Advisory Commitee, a professor, a Marine, and more. He's written a dozen or so books too.

Here's how it was in the past. I grew up in the 1950s and 1960s. I often got reminded of my inferiority, which was frustrating, embarrassing, sometimes hating myself. In those days, discrimination was LEGAL, so there was no one to complain to, no one who cared, and no one who could do anything about it even if they did care. So there were no excuses. My parents grew up in the 1920s, 30s, and 40s. They thought we had it easy!

It's a reoccurring mindset that the next generation has it easier. Which should be something to be proud of, but ends up becoming a detriment. Other times the previous generations are either envious and pass on their own negatives experiences to those they feel "have it too good nowadays," or use those experiences as warnings signs of what to avoid in life for the young ones in their life. As time passes, more information on what ails us is revealed. I believe we've reached a point in which there are too many attempts toward treatments. So much so that we create problems to "solve" when a solution was sitting in the corner gathering dust.

Another thing to think about, which doesn't apply to all people but certainly to some. If you're given options that are just that, optional, where if you choose to do nothing it doesn't have instant repercussions. The choice to do extra, as a choice, becomes harder. Not stipulating that everyone is lazy, but if you put language like "damned if I try, because I'm certain to fail" on top of this optional choice to face hardship. It's understandable why some would be apprehensive. In the past, they weren't given that choice. Succeed or die. So they fight to succeed against all odds and their merit prevails. Kids today have the same and often better chances than the past, but they are also given the option to avoid those opportunities. They aren't required, like our forefathers, to fight for a living. I think this ideology can be easily relatable to people. Think about times when you're coming home and you have the choice between buying food from a restaurant. Maybe a 10 minute diversion, eat on the way home. Or you could get home, prepare food for 30+ minutes, and eat. The same could be said with preparing to cook a meal vs microwaving a meal. There are tradeoffs with the choices, perhaps these tradeoffs aren't as bad or as impactful as going all in on an education and career, with no one giving you a safety net. Though that choice for convenience is a very similar choice. Why do something harder, when you can live on something easier?

Basically what he is saying is that people make excuses to explain why black children are not succeeding, these excuses always blame others so when they fail it's not their fault it's someone else keeping them down. If it was their fault they could do something to fix it, but because it's some unknown person keeping them down they tell them there is nothing that can be done and they should just give up.

Always focus on cause & effect solutions, not problems. If you understand cause and effect, or you could term it causes and conditions, with a basic understanding of the nature of a problem, the solution is revealed, though it may take some work to implement.

In clearer baseball terms: it didn't matter to the team in the field, how far Ernie Lombardi hit the ball: Lombardi was such a Slow Runner, that the fielders could tag him out even from the Outfield. Which is an accomplishment, considering there are ninety feet between bases, centerfield to home plate is up to 400 feet, and right/left fields are generally between 320-350 feet to home plate. That's a ways for a ball to travel. So no matter how long it took him to reach a base, fielders were confident they could throw faster and thus tag the runner OUT. Sports analogies can be tough to sit through, Jojo, I KNOW - I'm a METS FAN, haha. The idea is to Keep Striving. I know you are a Christian: Matthew 7:7 begins with "Ask, and it will be given you", but many people don't know that the translation was in the present tense. . .so the verse actually says Keep on Asking, Keep on Seeking, Keep on Knocking. Persistence is God's command. So many folks just STOP - don't you DARE Stop Asking, Seeking, Knocking!!

True.. .. I’d been, understanding different aspects of child rearing in relation to our educational process.. The industrial and manufacturing centers are all gone yet we still run a system design for factory workers. The one year gapping, conveniently, adds another subtle layer of divisions between individuals.. on top of everything else. 🤷‍♂️ Passing thought 👍

When he's talking about always being carried he means it as a good thing. Just before that he talks about he had 4 adults in his home(orphanage). Adults tend to hold the kids they like. Therefore they didn't know when he started walking because he was always being held by one of the adults because they all loved him

The ability to make and use an excuse is an easy way out. In order to be the most successful you must reject all excuses. That’s why there are phrases like “burn the ships”. If you don’t give yourself a way out then forward is the only option. Just like you bro, you do these videos every single day. If you keep it up and don’t make excuses to give your self a reason to take a day off you’ll be successful in this game and an added bonus you’ll learn a lot about yourself, about business and about other people and communities in the process

My brain works differently than most. This made school a bit hard for me. I don’t think I ever really read at my grade level. If I let myself give up because “I’m just stupid and can’t do it.” I don’t know where I would be. Instead I worked hard, figured out how I needed to study to learn and worked my tail off to get B and often got A just because I had work so hard to get the homework done to my best ability. Look at the struggles you have as something to be overcome not as something that marks who you are.

Not just more excuses, or lack of personal accountability. Lower educational standards in K-12, lower barrier of entry to get placed into colleges and universities due to affirmative action (A black athlete per a Princeton study on affirmative action has a 450 pt SAT advantage over a similar white student, and a 550 pt advantage over a similar Asian student), and then lower standards when being placed in the work place due to race based hiring practices. Although once you get to the job after having your hand held throughout the 20-25 years prior, rubber meets the road and you find out that now you are being judged based on the quality of work you produce, and the training wheels have been mostly taken off the bar (although there is still quite a lot of push to even lower those standards as well). This is where the effects of coddling are most prominent. Then, after nearly every standard along the way was lowered or removed, people still claim that some sort of "systemic racism" boogyman is responsible for failure. Personal accountability never enters the equation, like it did for Thomas Sowell growing up in the pre 60s social justice movement era where he was held to the same standard as everyone else.

You are right about now being the best time to succeed. People are begging for workers in fields that don't require a college education. Everybody went to college only to be one of hundreds of applicants applying for jobs in their field. Meanwhile nobody wanted to be a plumber and as a result most plumbers are over 50. When they retire all the young plumbers will have booming businesses. You can get a job as an apprentice, learn on the job and get paid good money. The average plumber's apprentice salary in the United States is $42,700. The medical field is wide open too. Facilities will send you to school to be a nursing assistant and hire you on at a decent pay. Most also will pay for schooling to advance to nurse. If any young person were to ask my advice on their future, I would tell them to skip college and the student loans and learn a trade. By the time the college students graduate, get a job, pay off their loans and start saving money, those who entered the trades will have a home, a swimming pool and a filled 2 car garage.

Your still completely missing his point.... 'Face palm'... He's saying that that you can't be upset that you're not the best at everything. We're all handicapped to some degree or another, while we thrive in other ways. And to blame your failures or handicaps upon others is childish. Rather than accept your own flaws except that you will never achieve much within those areas and figure out what you're actually good at... Stop blaming others and move on That is the point he's trying to drive home

I grew up in a little rural town on a river, john boat fishing and farming were the main employment opportunities, we had people still living in tarpaper shacks living off gardens and what they could kill. My first 8 years in school was in 4 rooms, 2 grades and one teacher per room, teacher would teach half the class while the other half studied and then taught that half while the first half studied. We had no air conditioning and wore coats in the winter because the heater could only get the temp up to cold when it was freezing outside . Somehow I managed to get a better education in those 8 years than most kids today are getting in 13 (we didn't have kindergarten back then). I dropped out at 16, got my GED at 17 but when I went to college at age 28 I was tutoring high school graduates, I didn't need any remedial courses, today over half of students have to take some if not a full semester of remedial studies just so they know what they should have learned in high school if not in grade school. As education has "advanced" it seems to have only advanced in cost, the schools are nicer, the food is better, but the students graduating are less educated than we were.
