#RMP .. The singer was also playing keyboards and the bongo drums. Kansas had a couple guitarists in the group. "Wayward Son" was written by the bands guitarist Kerri Livgren. Kerry stated that the 'song was not eenant to be any sort of religious song ' even tho there are a number of references. Kerri says that he wrote the song about himself as he goes along searching for the mearning of life.

In high school, one of my friends, a huge Kansas fan, had brought the Leftoverture album to school. He had it with him still as we were getting ready for football practice. He showed our (older) coach the album cover to which he asked, “Is that guy in the band?”

I have had the extreme good fortune to have seen KANSAS Live 4 times. Phil Ehart is my Favorite Drummer. He plays melodies not just rhythm patterns. Every member is a musical GENIUS. This song is usually extra long and a crowd favorite to close their shows. Steve Walsh is Keyboards and a great vocalist. Robby plays Violin like NOBODY else. Kerry on Guitar is phenomenal along with Rich and Dave….AWESOME performance every time.

Back in the day when this was hot for some reason Kansas NEVER played in Nebraska. I lived there so a buddy and I had to go to Red Rocks (God's Cathedral). Very well worth the trip and a nice ride on a couple of Harleys with our girls. 300 miles each way. I've seen them since then with the new band members in Reno (Harrah's former outdoor venue) Still killin' it. I still have this LP./Album. "Point of Know Return" and "Dust in the Wind" are two other deep songs from that era 45 years ago. "Surely, Heaven waits for you".😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇

Nice thoughts man. And I like the way you said it. It was like, it was a masterpiece and that word gets thrown around a lot but you experienced it and this really is a masterpiece this is why it was a massive hit. But this came out was I was in junior high school and I think people were thinking of it mostly As hey this is fun music to listen to to get stoned to because it's just triggers your mind in so many ways and it pulls on classical influences and the funny thing is, those guys grew up from like 20 minutes or 25 minutes from me honestly. As a freshman in college a roommate of mine from Topeka which is where they are from, actually had some of their hand-me-down band equipment that he incorporated into his massive audiophile system which was the thing back then. Now there is no such thing it seems. I just throw Bluetooth headphones on my ears and Crank It Up and equalize it if I need to.

Kerry Livgren wrote and submitted this song to the band when they had just finished recording the Leftoverture album, they were packing up the gear to leave and he played it to them and the rest is history. One of the greatest rock anthems of all time
