Same here. I'm 67 years old. We grew up with the same music. I finally got to see Kansas live at Mohegan Sun casino many years ago. They were outstanding! Steve Walsh was with them and his voice was outstanding! I had thought he would have lost a step or two with his age and what he had been through, but NOPE! He was so good!

"I think I've heard of a band called Kansas". lol. Kids these days, I'm feeling so old. This was one of their biggest songs Millie. I wouldn't call this prog, I'd put this into the category of 70's rock. The best decade for rock bands there ever was.

This song is definitely among their less proggier tunes. Though, it does have some proggy elements, messing with the time signatures. That being said, Kansas was definitely a prog band, (not that you said they weren't) with much of their catalog being very progressive.

Kansas was a great band from the 70's. Their musical style is a fusion of hard rock, southern rock & progressive rock. "Carry On Wayward Son" & "Dust In The Wind" are their 2 biggest hits. But they had other good songs such as "Point Of Know Return", "Hold On", "People Of The South Wind", "Play The Game Tonight", "Fight Fire With Fire", "All I Wanted" etc.

I saw Kansas 4 times over the years, the first time, they played at my high school about 3 years before this album was released! This was an amazing song, and incredibly, it was composed by Kerry Livgren (the blonde guitarist & piano player) overnight. The band was about to leave for the recording studio from their rehearsal hall, and Kerry told the band about this new song, They spent a couple of hours learning it, went to record it, and it was their first really big hit. While Kansas was an amazing Prog band, this song really wasn't Prog, at least not for them. The big guy, with the big hair & beard was named Robbie Steinhardt (RIP) who was a terrific singer, and an incredible violinist. His voice, combined with Steve Walsh (the organist & lead vocalist) really worked so well together. Kansas is still touring, though the only original members are Phil Ehart (drums) and Rich Williams (guitarist wearing white.) After this album, they began touring as the opening act for Queen, and they became a really huge band in the late 70s and early 80s.

Not quite. They were about to LEAVE the studio, getting ready to pack up, when Livgren walked in with the song. They laid it down and could not believe what they had. They were so tight because of their Record label, who had them on the road almost non-stop early on trying to build a base.

Same album had "Dust on the Wind", complete contrast to this one. Yet epic in its own right. I was working at our campus radio station, my own show, and ran the record (before CDs) and reviewed the new music and programmed them for air play. This unknown album came in over summer break. I gave one listen, and immediately picked Carry On and dust on the wind for rotation. Months later, I had to make sure they were back in rotation when the album went big nation wide. I was so puffed up about myself..😮

The “tambourine” guy was also their violinist and other lead vocalist, Robbie Steinhardt (RIP passed away in 2021) talented man! Closet Chronicles On the Other Side Hold On Lonely Wind (very pretty deep cut) Glimpse of Home Crossfire Icarus Icarus II I could go on. Deep cuts are always best Note: do the original audio versions of above or official video Steve Walsh (the lead singer) was probably top 5 of rock singers in his prime. Later on he lost a lot of his voice unfortunately. There are live clips from the 90’s & 2000’s that painfully document this Kerry Livgren (the blond guitarist) was their principle songwriter. His lyrics are a spiritual journey. He eventually became a born again Christian in 1980. Reflected in the song “Crossfire “ Also note: lots of requests for Dust in the Wind. Pretty song but very stripped down & mellow. Features Robbie on violin Was a Huge hit for them They are still touring. Only Rich Williams (the bushy haired guitarist) and Phil Ehart (the drummer) remain but they have a talented lineup of musicians with them. Sounds like the old band and then some! Kansas has an entire Universe of great songs that no one (besides true fans) has heard before. Sure everyone knows the 2 great tunes they released on singles ("Carry on Wayward Son" and "Dust in the Wind" --- which you must listen to next!) but there are many other tremendously inventive and progressive songs. Kansas played at my college homecoming weekend in 1976. It was the LOUDEST damned concert I ever heard. They played in our small gym, which seated 3500 for basketball in those days. We all walked out after several songs, because our ears were in serious pain! Now, I loved this band, and I love loud music still, at 67, but damn! I hate it when my ears bleed. We went back to my dorm, next door to the gym on our small campus, and opened the window. They sounded pretty good there! I hope the band can still hear. Their sound man obviously couldn't, or he would have turned it down. I probably heard 100 concerts from '73 to '77, but none came close to that loudness. It was overwhelming.

I never knew him, but grew up in same small city where the singer/keyboardist Steve Walsh grew up in. I was a freshman when he was a senior in our HS. Got to watch him in all of his early local bands. He was exceedingly talented even in his early days, plus a real monster on his Hammond b3 organ. Hey 👋 Millie, You’ll be diving down one awesome rabbit hole with these guys!😁I first started listening to these guys when I was in junior high school in the mid seventies and I can honestly say that their music 🎶 (and lyrics) completely changed my entire outlook on on life as well as music 🎼 They had a “huge” influence on me at that very turbulent time in everybody’s life and really shaped the way I approached music as well as life! If I had to pick one song of theirs that sums it all up, It would have to be “Magnum Opus”without a doubt! I think it’s their crowning achievement at the height of their powers in my humble opinion. First off please don't take this personally Millie, I love your reactions. I'm glad young people are getting to hear and appreciate this great music from the seventies. I grew up in the 70's, 8-18 years old, when all this great music was hitting the air waves. Kansas, Styx, Rush, Yes, Pink Floyd, ect. they were all just listed as ROCK. There were no progressive radio stations, there were no progressive sections in the record stores, all this great music was just ROCK. Each and every band back then just had thier own distinct sound, when a song came on you knew who it was by thier sound. People today are always trying to catagorize everything and break it down. Just enjoy the ROCK of the 70's like you do. Thanks and keep it up.

I'm from quite near where they are from, but definitely check out Point of No Return from their iconic album Point of Know Return. It was on the radio a lot and it's another storytelling song with a lot of great prog rock but still just that Central United States rock.❤

There are so many songs that they produced that will make you feel the same as you do here. Try "Dust in the Wind", "Point of Know Return", and one of my favorites "Portrait" (He Knew). They were very prolific for a relatively short period of time, but their music was so intense and wonderfully orchestrated. Do some research on them. You won't be disappointed.

This song was a huge hit when I was a kid. As soon as I heard it on the radio, I went out and bought the vinyl LP. I went to see Kansas in New Haven, CT at a medium sized arena. It was my first concert and the arena was almost sold out but we did get tickets but the seats were actually behind the stage so my brothers and I ended up watching the back of their heads the whole time. Live and learn on seat selection! Point of Know Return gets my vote for the next Kansas song if you decide to try them again.

Kansas was formed in 1973... Phil Ehart (drums) and Rich Williams (guitars) being the only founding members left, the band is known for being a prog rock giant... the band's biggest records featured this former singer Steve Walsh ... Kansas changed members over time, and once featured Steve Morse (guitar) who is best known for his work w/ Deep Purple from 1994 to 2021. Seen these guy's in 1980 at the Summer Nights festival in Darmstadt Germany, 7 bands and Kansas was one of them, along with B.O.C., foreigner, 38 Special, Motorhead, More and one of my favorite bands Iron Maiden.

Back in the day when this was hot for some reason Kansas NEVER played in Nebraska. I lived there so a buddy and I had to go to Red Rocks, CA (God's Cathedral). Very well worth the trip and a nice ride on a couple of Harleys with our girls. 300 miles each way with roughly $1 a gallon for gas on bikes. Hell yeah.😎😎 I've seen them since then with the new band members in Reno (Harrah's former outdoor venue) Still killin' it. I still have this LP./Album. "Point of Know Return" and "Dust in the Wind" are two other awesome songs from that era 45 years ago. They're still played on classic rock radio. "Surely Heaven waits for you"😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇

You should do some exploring of the genera that in the late 80s & early 90s was known as College Rock. It was less of a single musical type than a segment that did not fit the big labels formulas and thus made their way to success on their own terms through performing at colleges and getting airtime on college radio stations. Today the term is rarely used being replaced with Post Punk, Grunge, Alternative, Indie Rock, etc... A few worth checking out... 10,000 Maniacs, REM, Blues Traveler, Big Head Todd and the Monsters, Widespread Panic....
