This song was filmed in Montreal Canada. I saw them a few days later in Edmonton. This is my favourite version of Xanadu. No overdubs! No Loops! No backing tracks! Alex playing 6 and 12 string guitars and Moog Bass Pedals. Geddy shredding the Bass, keyboards, playing bass, singing and playing Moog Bass Pedals all at the same time! Then with Neil on the entire percussion section. Best band ever. You can hear the crescendo of the crowd for appreciation of how well they performed this song live. I was so fortunate to see this live in 1981.

I have seen Rush 9 times they actually played my high school in 74. I have seen them perform Xanadu 3x and this tour was by far the best. Neil amazing has a whole orchestral percussion here temple blocks, wind chimes and triangles everywhere, glockenspiel, bell tower, tubular bells, his massive kit and he writes the lyrics. Geddy playing synth, foot pedal organ, bass, rhythm guitar and vocals, Alex his usual self flawless, he should be a top ten guitarist not many better. 3 guys making it sound like 5 huge!!!!! Canada Rocks!!!!!!!

I got turned on to Rush in 1975 and I'm now 64 and enjoying seeing you and others of this generation getting turned on to amazing music from years ago. I was at this tour when they played in 1981 at the L.A. Forum. I've seen Rush many times over the years. 3 Virtuosos playing all the instruments, including Moog Pedals. Neil Peart, Rush`s drummer is the greatest Drummer that has ever banged on the percussion. He in fact, has a Doctorate in percussion from a Canadian University and was a Professor in percussion at that university. Sadly we lost Neil a couple years back. RIP Professor Neil!

I've seen Rush live over ten times in the 80's, 90's, 00's, and 10's. The reason people need to see Rush live is because it is hard to believe that three guys can actually play that music in front of a live audience. They always surprised us, and they would always play things that you would never expect. They truly ARE freaks of nature. This is REAL music.

Rush is beyond amazing in the studio, but the fact they can reproduce it live is unbelievable. I’ve played drums for over 40 years and I love Bonham and Keith Moon (both huge influences of mine) but Neil’s playing (and composing) is over their heads. Oh, and he writes the lyrics!

These guys sound like their albums in concert, not many bands I can say for that and the fact they sound like they have 5 members making all that sound. Very highly regarded among their peers and at one time or another over the years each member were voted best at their instruments, and they all come from the same band. Incredible musicians, and the song 2112 kinda put them in the forefront if you want to see the real mastery of Neil Peart.

I would say even better in shows... they always challenged themselves to become better, and modified their songs over the years to make them slightly more difficult so they keep giving them challenges in show. The original versions are great, the later live versions are just different in the right way (maybe not better, that's a question of personal taste, but it makes it more interesting to find more and more versions of each song)

I totally agree with you, Rush has always been a live band. The comparison I was making is that on a studio recorded album every instrument is clear and the band is tight sounding and polished, but Rush just sounds like that polished live but even better.

That was another thing about these guys, they were always on top of technology when it came to audio, it wasn't just how their instruments sounded, but how their music was projected audio wise in concert. Always made the difference too.

"The singer plays bass" is a statement about to be blown away by the video you chose. In this video, Geddy Lee plays bass, keyboards, and 12-string guitar, as well as bass pedals so he do more than one at a time... all while singing. Alex Lifeson plays 6- and 12-string guitars and foot pedals and saying Neal Peart plays drums is a HUGE understatement! This is a great song to be introduced to the virtuosity of band Rush. If you haven't checked it out already, check out the official live version of La Villa Strangiato. It's just amazing.

Rush Moving Pictures tour 1981 was my first concert, was just a kid, loved Rush but didn't know all of their songs, to say it blew my mind is obvious, it became a high-water mark for all live band performances and stage shows, they just love composing and playing their own music and that love is so infectious and translates so well in concert. They wrote for themselves first, they had to play the songs so they wanted to craft music they would love to play over and over, if the fans get it, even better, but Rush never dumbed-down their music for mass appeal, they didn't treat their listeners as too dumb to "get it"

Alex is the master of tone. Here he is great, so many voices. 45 years he has taken us to other worlds. A lot of us older fans like to check Rush reactions out. It often leads us to stay around for a bit for a few that we like. This was a fun reaction for me, much like my reaction on the "down the tubes tour" when I first saw them in late 1975.

The studio version (on the album Farewell to Kings) is very good. But, the live version adds an energy that lifts it to another level. It is also amazing to see all that those three guys did. You see Neil’s kit, including just about any percussion tool there is. Then the double necks both Alex and Geddy play. First thought many have is “this is just for show.” Then they use all of it. Every last bit of equipment. And they move from one musical movement to another seamlessly. Transitions are flawless. Unreal. You really should watch Dave Grohl and the late Taylor Hawkins of Foo Fighters induct Rush into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Great reaction. You just witnessed on of the best live performances of all time by one of the best trios of all time. You definitely need to react to more live Rush. These guys are all right there with the best of all time on their respective instruments. They put a lot of emphasis on being able to to perform their songs live as good as they did in the studio. I will suggest some of my favorite live performances below. 1) "La Villa Strangiato" The official video. This one was recorded in one take on a closed stage so no audience but still live and it is from 1978 I believe. It is a great example of a band taking one of their clastic songs and putting a new spin on it. The recording quality of the sound and video on the original were not great but this remaster is amazing, It really is a must see and so far no reactors have reacted to this remaster. Most people react to the live in Rio version which is great but it does not have the drum solo which is phenomenal. YYZ are the call letters for the Toronto International airport. I've seen Rush seven times, the first was the Signals tour in 82, I was 16. They sound amazing live, their songs are the same as on their records. I sang along with every one, every time. Love this band. A Farewell to Kings is one of my Top 10 albums of all time. When I was your age I listened to them pretty much constantly.

I'm mainly a visual person myself, and I've always been partial to recommending live performances because IMO the visual elements, not to mention seeing the masters at work, simply take the songs to a whole new level. For two more legendary performances, I recommend their epic masterpiece 2112 as performed at Toronto's Molson Amphitheater in 1997, and Natural Science from the same show. Kinda reminds me of my son's 1st reaction to Rush at the Snakes and Arrows tour at Red Rocks in Colorado. He was 17 at the time. After about the 3rd song, his face was a mirror of yours. How do 3 guys make that much sound??? Alex ang Geddy did their thing and Neil added his usual 10 - 15 drum solo. 3 hours, with a 20 minute break, at altitude. Un-freaking-beliveable. My son didn't say much on the 1.5 hour drive home. When we got home, we got out of the car, he hugged me and said "Thanks Dad. I love you"....'And I also love Rush!!!' Rush endures...

I'm one of the ones from that generation and there was a time I was a professional musician as a drummer, so of course I studied Bonham and of course Neil's work, with Neil that level always increased! I saw Rush during this tour, December ‘81. Like someone else posted, their live performance is levels above their studio albums. All three are very talented. Neil Peart was imo the best drummer on the planet. Alex Lifeson doesn’t get enough credit for what he adds. Geddy Lee does more than you realize by watching videos like this. You can see us him playing bass while singing, but what you can’t see, he also plays a foot pedal synthesizer at the same time. Three things at once. No way I could do that.

RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR! Based on the epic poem Kubla Khan by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. In grade 12, we had to choose a poem and connect it to our times. The teacher let me play Xanadu for the class after I explained the poem. I saw them for their Farewell to Kings album tour here in Ottawa which is where this song is from. Masterpiece.

The studio version of Xanadu is played live in studio (one take, I think). It's good, very tight, but not as good as this version, which hits a new musical level. geddyn said they nevernhave anything before a show. rehearse 2 weeks alone for the rehearsal, another 6-8 weeks together then 2 weeks with the bnd, lights etc. so they are very tight and took pride in being able to do the album live.

I was 24 years old during this tour - but not yet a Rush fan. Went to a Red Sox/A's game in Oakland and Rush was doing THIS tour in the arena, which shares the same parking lot. I was at the wrong event. Didn't become a fan until a few years later. Got to see them live 3 times. Yeah, you really missed something special. At least you can relive the recorded performances.

Speaking of them putting on a show, in the later years, the concert would start with a video in which all three played silly parts. They had no over blown egos, and loved to make fun of themselves in the videos. A favorite of mine is the opening for their Time Machine tour. The video leads into the opening song, The Spirit of Radio. Then, following an intermission, a second video is played to open them playing the entire Moving Pictures album. Both are hilarious.

Thanks for the reply dude! Check out Pink Floyd Pulse live. All tracks are great and the the stage is from anther wold. They only played 5 cities in the US. When I found the DVD I had to get it, since I couldn't make it to the Dallas show. The tour was in 1994 and the shows were beyond any band out there. I still get goosebumps with the song Comfortably Numb. It's about one of the band members got very I'll as a child.

later they added movies such as that darn dragon on r30. if you like alex try his solo la villa strangiado. neil does stuff like the weapon live with alex dancing around the stage. or the instrumental with drum solo where's my thing here it is live in dallas. bass solo with geddy starts it out.
