i live in Brighton. it's often called 'little London by the sea'. i first came her to attend university as a mature student in '83. i loved it so much i stayed. it's got loads of colleges and so lots of young people. plus it's where Londoners come to party. it's the gay capitol of the UK and 'alternative' people are almost the norm here.

This was the song that hooked me on Queen! Brian uses 2 echoes (originally a tape loop called an Echoplex) to repeat the original riff in the same way Freddie later did vocally in The Prophet's Song, building up harmonies. Listen and try to follow the original line! In concert this often went on for 10 minutes. Still love the raw energy of the original though!

That's right, it's not just the guitar on this track, it's the whole band, and I especially like the drumming here. The song was used in concerts to make room for Brian's solo which he took in different directions and probably improvised a lot. He used the delay effect extensively. And yeah, Mustapha! Won't be the first reaction though, somebody did the whole Jazz album already :D

I love this, love this, love this song! The sheer joy and complexity of Dr. May's mind is encapsulated in this song. May is my favorite guitarist and probably my favorite musician. Glad to hear some real respect for Roger Taylor's drumming. No one talks about a drummer's range. Think for a minute of the range of his styles across the multitude of genres and he always sounds musical, it always makes the song fuller, and it is always displays exquisite taste! Thanks for reacting. I would recommend Dead on time and Stone Cold Crazy for some more hard Queen.

@Andy & Alex I took a tape to the office one day with "Brighton Rock" on it one day in 1990, and the girls in the office only knew Queen from their more recent, more softer, more commercial albums. Then came this track and their minds blew away ! One said "Wow ! I never knew Queen could play such hard stuff!" - I said she hadn't heard anything yet ! ❤ This song really showed how such brilliant musicians Queen were, and actually still are. Brian May on his magic lead guitar, John Deacon' s bass guitar was fantastic and Roger Taylor on drums was phenomenal - and that is not even mentioning Freddie Mercury's vocals ! This is extraterrestrial, it really is ! Queen for ever !🙌😘😍😅

As is the case with most Queen songs there is the literal sort of interp and the secondary interp - a song about meeting on holiday - the guy has a fling with a girl - and gets back but can’t continue the relationship - in case his lady discovers what he did on his holiday. :). But who cares the Brian v Brian delay solo is the gold.

This song is Brian May's baby. It includes an unaccompanied guitar solo interlude, which used delay to build up guitar harmony and contrapuntal melodic lines. The studio version only contains one “main” guitar and one “echoed” guitar for a short section, but live, May would usually split his guitar signal into “main” and two “echoed”, with each going to a separate bank of amplifiers. He played this at nearly every concert and in later years the guitar solo got even longer to give the band a break. This song is not as much about Brian's guitar abilities as it is the music innovation. No one else could do this because they didn't have the "Deaky" amp. that the bass player, John Deacon invented. Thanks for the love, my friend.

As a side note, it may interest you to know that Queen's guitarist, Brian May, holds two PhDs in astrophysics, and when he's not doing music, he works for NASA. He headed the New Horizon mission; an unmanned probe that was the first fly-by to Pluto, Thule Ultima, and is going to be the third man-made object to leave the solar system and enter interstellar space. NASA was saying "We need to build a piano size machine, send it to a planet 3 billion miles away that we never visited, travel for 9 years, fly past the planet at 38,000 MPH, take hundreds of photos, get all the data possible, and then fly further into space and visit things we barely know are there before traveling toward the stars and still collect data along the way." Brian May said "Hold my beer."

Queen have done a lot of great music throughout all their albums, but they did two original albums that as a whole are their most outstanding, Sheer Heart Attack and A Night At The Opera, and they both really need to be played from start to finish for full impact and effect. Though Opera is commonly considered the better of the two, for me Sheer Heart Attack is their masterpiece, up there with the very best albums by any other artist, ever. My recommendation, Andy, is that you play that album all the way through (Brighton Rock opens it) for an experience I guarantee you will never forget. It'll blow you away like it did to me when I first heard it. when it was released 44 years ago. And it still does

If you like Brian's guitar, check Brian May's Starfleet Project. It's only 3 songs. The title track is a cartoon theme song, the other two tracks, Blues Breaker (a jam to get use to playing together) and Let Me Out. It's Brian May and 4 other musos, including Edward Van Halen and Phil Chen on bass. I think it is at the end of Blues Breaker, if you listen close enough, you hear Eddie's top E string snap, but he still finishes his solo on the other 5 strings.

The song is about Jimmy and Jenny on holiday meeting and falling in "love" at a fair. Hence the fairground noises at the beginning. Jenny's parts are sang in Freddie's high register. Jenny falls in love with Jimmy and writes him letters. Jimmy replies that he must "away" because if his wife found out he would be in trouble. Simple song by Brian that showcases his "guitar choir" where he overdubs guitar parts numerous times to get an almost choral sound. Every album prior to "The Game" boasted the fact that no synthesizers were used, but the overdubs made it sound like maybe they were. And, yes, you are correct about Roger Taylor. He can drum! And has a beautiful singing voice. This is my favorite Queen album. It's so diverse and, in my mind, is the point where Queen becomes the Queen we all know and love. Stick to this album for a bit. It has a lot to offer. "Stone Cold Crazy" will blow your mind. But, if you are doing "Mustapha" then I am on board for that. Fast song that will put a smile on your face. What Queen song doesn't make you smile, though? Peace

Did you know that Brian still plays with younger bands from time to time? Like, one time he performed The Black Parade with My Chemical Romance (and was naturally the best thing about that performance since they aren’t the best concert band BUT that song was partly written to honor Queen and the lead singer incorporates a bunch of Freddie’s moves into the performance so that is tear jerking). Brian also wrote some stuff recently in honor of his work with NASA on the New Horizons probe.

Man I was raised on Floyd and Queen and the like. I can say with some certainty that I have never heard this before. That guitar solo was epic. There's an interview with Brian May where he talks about his guitar and its sound. Think he said its to do with extra pick-ups that he installed while building it. Apparently he designed and built the guitar with his dad in his dads shed. I'm sure someone on here could tell you more than I could on the subject 😁

Bri also plays with a sixpence coin, not a pick. They are no longer made but a few years back arrangements were made to recreate a sixpence, but with Brian’s head on the face of it, instead of Queen Elizabeth. I reckon she didn’t mind much as she had Bri play “God Save The Queen” on the roof of Buckingham Palace during her Golden Jubilee in 2002. Roger Taylor and the rest of the musicians stayed down on the ground to accompany him, which was a feat in itself. It had to be timed precisely because of the distance from Brian, otherwise it would have sounded terribly out of sync.

Queen doesn't ever want to repeat things, they want to change it up for every album. They are professionals and they have a lot of ideas between the four of them and each of them writes completely different styles of music. Brian likes hard metal type rock, though with that said some of his pieces are so soft and beautiful. Roger is totally rock and roll, John has his own style and Freddie is all over the map with what he likes but he writes mostly ballads about love and pain or so he says. Freddie also said in an interview when asked how much music does he write? His answer: "About 12 songs a day." Can you imagine the songs by him that nobody has ever even heard?

oh yeah, of course the studio version is great, live though they take it to another level. Freddie always said that a live show show be something different than the studio, people can stay home and listen to the records so they would give 120% live. And you dig Roger Taylor's drumming, wait till you see and hear this version :-). Cheers back at ya!!!

Roger Taylor is amazing on drums and his vocals are awesome as well. Brian can seriously play guitar, he's amazing. He plays his guitar in different ways, but he has a very distinctive sound. It's almost like his guitar has a unique voice that you can tell is Brian May's guitar playing. Another good song to play is March of the White Queen. His guitar is mesmerizing in that song. I think you will love it. I've only listened to the live version from Live at the Rainbow. The song as a whole is awesome, with Freddie singing, performing and playing piano as well.

One more irrelevant link. Nina Hagen, Naturträne. Inspired madness. kzbin.info/www/bejne/anWQnoSknrugn9U Edit: Had some trouble trying to post this earlier, keeping it together with the rest of my clutter, so I've added a new comment for it. She goes operatic and mock-serious. (Terribly mocking. She really hams it up, and it's quite funny.) It's just another one of those songs it's important to experience at least once in a lifetime, so I have to post the link. (Actually she did a cover of White Punks on Dope, too. It's cool, but the Tubes are the best.)

First of all just the name "Brighton Rock" has quite a few associations if you live in England. Brighton is a town on the south coast of England that became famous as a place for Londoners to go to the sea and let it all hang out, it's a very lively town and has a very gay scene. See www.buzzfeed.com/kimberleydadds/things-you-simply-must-do-in-brighton. Also old British seaside towns sell long sticks of hard candy called "rock" that you can suck or break your teeth on while getting type 2 diabetes. Down the center of the sticks of rock is the name of the town. So a stick of "Brighton Rock" will have the word "Brighton" down the middle, but you can get personalised sticks www.letteredrock.co.uk/ . Then of course "Rock" means music. So Queen calling a track "Brighton Rock" manages to combine the idea of music, with the idea of hard sticks that you suck on, with the Brighton gay scene. Quite of lot of mixed up euphemisms.

Written by Brian May, “Brighton Rock” tells the story of two young lovers named Jenny and Jimmy meeting in Brighton on a public holiday. Mods travelling to Brighton on bank holidays was a popular narrative at the time (see The Who’s Quadrophenia). The song includes an unaccompanied guitar solo interlude, which used delay to build up guitar harmony and contrapuntal melodic lines. The studio version only contains one “main” guitar and one “echoed” guitar for a short section, but live, May would usually split his guitar signal into “main” and two “echoed”, with each going to a separate bank of amplifiers. Original Working Titles for this song were: “Happy Little Fuck”, “Happy Little Day”, “Blackpool Rock”, “Bognor Ballad”, “Southend Sea Scout”, “Skiffle Rock and Herne Bay”. Session engineer Mike Stone is the likely culprit of some of the titles, though the band members themselves frequently employed working titles during the song development process.

The ending of the last track on the previous album Queen II which is "7 Seas Of Rhye' is an old British song called 'I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside' which dovetails into the start of this track which is the sounds of a funfair at the seaside, which is what Brighton is, a seaside resort. Clever buggers that Queen huh?

If they viewed themselves as a purely rock and roll outfit this would have been a good signature song to kick-start their every live act/performance with, subsequent to its release. A celebration of and a tribute to rock 'n roll and love , all in one song. But clearly they were eager and ready to explore every form of music and did not appear to fear or to shy away from any prospect. The one's who hate "Hot Space", and religiously flay Queen for venturing into disco space have a closed, shut-off mind, and have not given it a patient hearing.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it but the guitar during the solo is not double-tracked, it's played live on an echo effect pedal, so that he's playing against himself in real time. This is just blow-your-mind in the Live at Wimbledon version.
