This song caused my sister to call me “A terrible mother “, because my son loved and listened to Rage frequently. I NEVER censored what my kids listened to, watched or read. I actually love this band! Unfortunately this song is relevant today! I lost my only son 9 years ago this month. This reaction made me smile remembering how much he loved this band!💔

@@paceflchick I'm 35 but I think we might be kindred spirits lol. I have a deep love and appreciation for everything between doo wop to present day. Also love me some classical too. I used to despise '80s and doo wop because I thought they were just frivolous types of music and it wasn't until my 20s that I realized that all music serves its unique purpose. I totally pride myself on my musical knowledge and always love the look on older people's faces when I whoop ass at music trivia!

Agreed! When Zak de la Rocha left RATM to focus full-time on social activism the rest of the band had to do something with their talent thus we have Audioslave. The awesome singer Chris Cornell joined Tom, Brad, and miT and they became Audioslave. The first time I heard this song was when my youngest cousin played it for me. I think he was trying to shock me cuz I was 40 or so but all I could say is "that is one angry dude". If you don't believe that minorities in this country get a bum rap, you have no right to listen to RATM. It was not just music for them, it was a rallying cry for those that can hear and understand. I feel the same way about Colin Kaepernick. And guess what? Colin's adoptive white mother feels the same way. Another great protest group was the Flobots. Their Fights with Tools album is amazing. Try Handlebars.

I've never heard the studio version, yet alone even heard of this band, but I loved the energy of this performance! The bass player, the lead vocalist, drummer, and guitar player were just so into it and brought this song alive. The tempo changes were a little bit confusing, but they brought their way back eventually. I didn't even notice the bass being extra loud cause I was too busy bobbling my head, though I felt like it could've used more guitar, and the crowd was a little out of control in my opinion, but that's understandable. With that being said, great live performance. Btw, how was the guitar player making the whistle noises on the guitar? Cause that had me shook!!!

If you like Tool, "Know Your Enemy." Tom grew up with Adam and introduced him to Maynard. But the entire debut by Rage and The Battle of Los Angeles are flawless. Evil Empire has Bulls on Parade and Down Rodeo. Renegades is all covers, but a few stand out like Renegades of Funk. Audioslave is Rage but with Cornell on vocals Brad played drums on the final Black Sabbath album 13. Prophets of Rage is Rage but with Chuck D and DJ Lord of Public Enemy and B-Real of Cypress Hill. (Minus Zack).

When you guys get a chance may I suggest Iron Butterfly's - In A Gadda da Vida? Wade right into the LONG 17 minute version. Great bass, drums - excellent three minute drum solo as well as organ playing - there is a four minute organ/drum piece embedded plus strong male singing. At the beginning MAKE SURE and catch the first fifteen seconds - it is a haunting organ solo that leads right into driving bass guitar and drums. There is also some unconventional guitar play - unusual at times! Frankly - I would actually recommend a little weed before hand and let it take you with it! Find the "Best Long Version" with great 60s video graphics! Rage! Yeah, here we go... Some listeners prefer studio and others prefer live. I've always loved live even if the sound is not ideal or the parts are off a bit. For me it gives the 'real' quality to the music. My tastes...studio a lot of times...so much is done that's impossible to recreate in a live situation. One of the things that drove me nuts years ago learning Randy Rhodes riffs was that he over dubbed so many layered tracks it was basically impossible (at least with the tech then) for a single guitar player to get close to that sound. Often studio takes the life out of a song. Years ago when I first started listening to parts closely I was frustrated with the studio version of Smoke on the Water but I loved the live version on the live Made in Japan album. The live really captured the spirit of what the band was after even though by some standards it was imperfect. Thanks for the reaction. I always loved Rage. I remember years ago on WTOS in Maine a D.J. always played a Rage song if the request (on Saturday night) was incoherent...good memories.

Some of their later live performances like around 1999-2000 are exceptional as Zack De La Rocha has gotten more experienced commanding the stage and audience. Watch them LIVE though. In my opinion, that’s when they’re at their best! Bulls on Parade, Testify, Bullet In The Head, Born of a Broken Man, Freedom, Sleep Now In The Fire, their concert outside the 2000 Democratic National Convention is AMAZING! The sound on the video isn’t perfect, but the energy, angst and overall inspiration they exuded was amazing.

I REALLY disagree! Open air is soo much easier to mix, because there is no reflection off the back wall, thus lots less feedback. BUT what sounds good live does not on TV. Unless they got another full mixing-station, TV usually gets a version of the live mix, which is done for one specific location. And even if a TV station brings along a full mixing station, their mixers often aren't the biggest rock lovers, so they might just not have the expertise. And then add the TV station's compression stage, which is mostly set up to benefit their general programming and will mess with even good mixes! When it comes to bad sounds at festivals, blame the band's engineer. A few friends and I once were at a festival where Him played before Marilyn Manson and the singer was not audible. I went by the FOH place, saw the mixer chugging beer after beer and knew why. I actually hit him with a couple of guitar picks (which I always carry in my pocket) and he didn't even flinch...

I do have to again disagree, I’ve played quite a few outside festivals and have plenty of friends who’ve played huge outdoor festival circuits. The sound off a back wall isn’t a massive issue, most venues are indoors and it’s a very common sound situation. However outdoors (unlike an indoor experience) you arnt able to control the sound, it usually dissipates unevenly. I actually wrote an applied mathematics paper waiting for publishing on sound attenuation with variable frequencies. Bass notes especially are way easier to mix and make sound good indoors. Mid range cuts very well outdoors but other frequencies are hard to mix evenly. To exemplify this the normal “Room” reverb is a hugely desired and almost universally used effect which is exactly the “problem” you refer to. All love friend but like I said I do have to kindly disagree 😬

Great review. I do disagree about the comment about the bass being too loud because during the guitar solo it carried both the low end and a rhythm guitar vibe that did not otherwise exist. Each instrument had to be equally dominant for this performance. If they did a Mettalica mix, the performance would not have had the energy required.

Look up a post of their first performance at a outside picnic with about maybe fifty people there. They were already-kicking butt. It is funny to watch the mosh pit of one.

It's the only song I know off them but oh man what a song. Very agressive text and guitar playing but it's completing the text.

You guys probably won't see this, but fun fact: Tom Morrelo has a degree from Harvard in Social Studies. He also worked as a stripper while waiting/hoping to get into a band.
