That's Tina Weymouth on the bass and Chris Frantz on the drums. One of the most underrated rhythm sections in modern rock history. As for song suggestions, here goes: Crosseyed and Painless Born Under Punches Girlfriend is Better Swamp Slippery People Once in a Lifetime Take Me to the River (Live ) This is a band that went through a number of changes in their career, so it's impossible to assess them from just a song or two. Punk, Afro-funk, pop -- they covered it all.

Talking Heads were a unique, almost unclassifiable band. They were one of the original NYC 1976 punk bands from CBGB (The Ramones, Talking Heads, Blondie, Dead Boys, etc.) The singer/main songwriter is David Byrne. Other Heads song you must hear: "Once In A Lifetime," "Burning Down The House."
@SciPunk215

This was happening in NYC at CBGBs alongside Punk Rock. Very different, weird and quirky. That was the whole point. Singer David Byrne is a true artist who works in many media. This was the musical phase of his career. Tina Waymouth is underrated as a bass player. She carries many of their songs. If you want to hear the complex rhythms they are known for, check out "Life During Wartime". (Live version from movie "Stop Making Sense" gives you a good idea what they're about.)

Hey guys. Loved the video. Talking Heads were part of the punk new wave movement of the late 70s in New York City as you probably have read in other comments. Their music was an expression of the anxiety and paranoia of that time. They have a unique style which draws influences from the German krautrock band Can, African rhythms and spoken word poetry. I would love to see you react to the song “The Great Curve” from the Remain in the Light album. It’s a great song and blends all these styles together. Thanks.

It's hard to define Talking Heads music because it tended to bend genres. They are referred to most often as New Wave, but Talking Heads was deeply influenced by Punk. They were the opening act for The Ramones before they landed a recording contract. Psycho Killer is the song that put them on the map, I think it was released in 1977. The lead singer, David Byrne, is an odd duck. I think he's referred to himself as being borderline Aspberger's. Among my favorite Talking Heads songs are: Take Me to the River, Road to Nowhere, And She Was, and Once in a Lifetime. Great reaction guys!

Their album "Remain in Light" released in 1980 was a huge step forward for the band, produced by Brian Eno, it's a stone cold classic. It's dense at times, lots of layers and includes African rhythms and electronica. 'Once in a Lifetime' was the big hit single but there isn't a bad track here.

Great song by a great, influential group. The Talking Heads were big in the late Seventies and throughout the Eighties, with their biggest hits coming in the Eighties. "Burning Down the House" is one of their biggest hits, along with "Once in a Lifetime" "Life During Wartime" "Girlfriend is Better" and "Love-->Building on Fire". All of which and more are great songs to react to. But, to get the full experience, you should watch the award-winning concert film, Stop Making Sense, just for personal enjoyment. Keep listening: Crosseyed & Painless, This must be the place, Once in a lifetime, Burning down the house, Take me to the river (this is actually an Al Green song they re-popularized) Road to nowhere, born under punches, slippery people, life during wartime, the great curve, i zimbra, houses in motion, cities, air, mind, don't worry about the government, thank you for sending me an angel, heaven, found a job, I'm not in love They were widely thought to be ahead of their time and still resonate decades later in many bands today. The earlier stuff is generally better than the later but there's a lot to get into. Enjoy

Also, Fear of Music album; especially I Zimbra, Cities and Memories Can’t Wait. Also love their Naked album. The Democratic Circus and Cool Water are seminal. Enjoy

The studio/album (Talking Heads 77) of this song is what drew me into the Heads in the first place. I was a junior in high school. We as a people had NEVER heard anything like this before. It was ground-breakingly detatched! One of my very favorite concert moments of my life was on the Stop Making Sense tour. I walked into the Long Beach Arena late and the whole place was JUMPING in unison to "Burning Down the House." Fun, fun times! 1984 Do also check out some of the Heads' happier tunes like "Love goes to a Building on Fire" (dig the horns) or even "Artists Only." I love the line and delivery of "I don't have to prove that I am creative!"

Thanks for giving Talking Heads a chance (& Alex's bandmate). Love David Byrne! Think of this genre as performance art. That's why it's imperfect. :) I understood only 1/2 of the French lyrics, so is anyone fluent & can translate fully, I think 3rd verse? I think of this group as in between Iggy Pop & Bowie. Good & fair reaction A&A! :) Good one to ya.

"Life During Wartime" I think would be a great one. It captures the same intense paranoid emotion in this song, but probably even better. Musically, "Burning Down the House" is great for a later song where the band started to get into some interesting textures and rhythms.

We used to listen to Talking Heads before going out on patrol, when I was stationed in the middle east during the early 80's. Nothing like seeing a bunch of guys in camo dancing, playing air guitar with our rifles, and singing along to Psycho Killer. The locals thought we were demons, or at least possessed with one when they saw that. They tended to give us a lot of space after seeing us dance around to Talking Heads songs.

The 80's was the renaissance of alternative rock/punk/new wave. The bands put their hearts and souls into their music. They are genuine, wrote their own songs, and cared about people, made a connection to their fans and basically broke all the rules of what rock was doing up til then. Keep listening - Depeche Mode, Psychedelic Furs, New Order, Devo (WAY before their time), The Clash, Violent Femmes, Tears for Fears - it was a great time to live in. I was in my 20's during those years. Before Grunge seeped in the 1990's.

This is one of my favourite Talking Heads songs. Wee excerpt on Byrne. Not to be pitied at all 😁 - Byrne has released solo recordings and worked with various media including film, photography, opera, fiction, and non-fiction. He has received Academy, Grammy, and Golden Globe Awards, and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.[1]😁💗💗 I hope you do some more. Thanks for this Guys, even if you didn't completely get it yet, it was still fun 😁😁x

@@lisaw5604 Those flower pot hats are legendary now. I initially disliked Devo. "Whip It" was good but until many years later when I delved into their catalog I began to enjoy them much more. I showed a 26 year old kid at work the video for "Joko Homo" one day. He said, "I thought this was a music video and you show me an episode of the "Twilight Zone." Maybe A&A should start off with "A Beautiful World." It's nice and musical and can ease them into "Uncontrollable Urge." Then they can go deep if they enjoy those. And check out the movie "Island of Lost Souls." It's a 1930's movie about the "Island of Dr. Moreau" starring Charles Laughton and Bela Lugosi. Bela has a speech about what the 'animal men' should never do and he ends every Law with the question: Are we not men? NO! We are DEVO!
