The Talking Heads deny this song is about anyone in particular, but it was rumored to be about serial killer David Berkowitz.

Damn, crazy he wrote it about David Berkowitz three years before he killed anyone.

They were avant-garde artsies - to be different was their mission 🥴
@Batwing2029310 ай бұрын
This was before Berkowitzs rampage, though. This song was recorded first in 1975, David’s killings began in July of 1976. The song did not officially come out until 1977. It was bad timing.

Talking Heads a are an innovative and weirdly creative group that made my college years so much fun! I didn't see them in concert 😢 - but a lot of cover bands played this song in rock clubs. When they did, the dance floor was packed! We didn't care about the meaning of the song just wanted to dance and sing "Fa, fa, fa, fa. Fa fa, fa, fa!"
@BCElginTex11 ай бұрын
I saw them live in Austin, TX. I think it was at the Opry House or maybe at the Armadillo. I remember the bass player because she played great bass lines on all of the songs ... probably listened to the bass also because L'm a bass player.

The "Run run run away" goes both ways. You run away so -he- they don't get you and after they killed someone they have to run run away from the scene, people, and police!
@violetfemme41111 ай бұрын
They were art students and friends who just decided to be "new wave" stars. And the bass player is female.

The "style" of the song is New Wave, where new bands abandoned fancy production so as to get back to the basics. The "dude" in blue is Tina Weymouth, who was the lead singer in the Tom Tom Club--you called her an English teacher in that reaction. The lead singer is David Byrne. The Talking Heads made a concert movie in 1985 called "Stop Making Sense" which has just been rereleased. You may want to check it out.

Talking heads are amazing. You can’t go wrong with them. Also. This song was on guitar hero 2 I think or maybe rock band. It’s why a lot of young people have ever heard of it. They’re an extremely popular band that have been featured constantly in tv and movie soundtracks as well. This must be the place, girlfriend is better, burning down the house, etc. They were ahead of their time for sure. David (singer) is also infamous for his dancing and the big ass suit like in the Stop Making Sense concert movie which got a theatrical rerelease in September.

My only perfect score on Rock Band was to this song. I knew it so well.
@LudusAurea11 ай бұрын
@@mranster ya I was positive it was on one of them, definitely played it a jillion times . I think I forgot they existed again after that until I watched agents of shield and then when “this must be the place “ was in season 5 or 6 I was like holy shit I need more. It’s a feat to be unfamiliar with them - even if you don’t know you know them, you’ve probably heard them .

Hi, MR Liked your thoughtful comments and glad you saw a non-single version! Echoing others, and humbly opinionating, some of what this band did is among the best stuff rock has produced-at several levels more advanced than this cool opening. You'll want to know it. The live concert film is an astonishing and wonderful entry to the band, but their masterpiece is the lp Remain In Light, (and when you want to see what THAT sounds like live, there are a few priceless European tv grabs on YT)

I hope you able to bless yourself and caught the recent re-release of the best concert movie: STOP MAKING SENSE. This is a newly-restored and new director's version. The existing DVD is pretty great, as well, and seeing that THEN the expanded version allows you to be aware of the improvements and additions. I can strongly recommend watching STOP MAKING SENSE as an introduction to all of Talking Heads' music... see the movie, then track down those earlier albums, which are full of treasures.

By the way, this song was written before 1974's first-ever performance as a club band in NYC. The lyrics that reference "can't sleep/livewire" were referencing common psycho-killer excuses and were not specifically related to David Berkowitz ("Son Of Sam" killer) whose murderous campaign started in 1975. There were obviously serial killers dating back into man's history, but the birth of the Mass Printed Page (ie, books and newspapers) illuminated these like never before (Jack the Ripper's 1888 spree). WWI and WWII brought PTSD issues back to humankind, although each wave of the Crusades brought back killers who'd learned nothing but killing and rampaging for decades. When they came back to Europe, what were their skills as a 20-30-40 year old male? "Hand to hand, in-yer-face killing." Great... perfect for 12th Century Europe, huh? And so it's been, ever since. There was some, uh, "renewed interest" is PTSD psycho killers as Vietnam vets returned to the American streets but, considering the comparatively few in numbers next to WWII vets, Psycho Killer Vietnam Vets received a huge focus due to TV and later books & movies exposure. David Byrne's PSYCHO KILLER was reflecting this reality. Since this song wasn't released on-record until 1977 - which was just after David Berkowitz's killing spree ("my neighbor's dog Sam told me to kill-!"), it was an all-too-easy leap for the publicity machine to make that connection between PSYCHO KILLER and "son of Sam" murders.
