That topic could work! A good question to ask yourself is: "Does this topic demonstrate the skills, qualities, values, and interests I offer the school as an incoming student?" If yes, then start outlining and writing your first drafts. If no, go back to brainstorming!

Yes, it's somewhat common to write about speech/debate and how it's helped you "find your voice". If you're going to write about speech/debate, could it be possible to make some more uncommon connections? Try brainstorming some more!

You will likely have other opportunities to discuss your extracurriculars in the Activities List and in any supplemental essays that ask you to elaborate on one of your activities. For these reasons, I'd suggest writing your personal statement on something other than an extracurricular activity, even if it is somewhat uncommon.
