Easy mistake to make, I was born in 1981 so I classify as either a millennial or a late-stage gen x-er depending on what graph you look at. I also don't have much patience for older people calling them lazy or saying that they are ruining everything.

You can kinda look at it like Xennials- broke in home PCs and dial-up, early cell phones with the antennas you had to pull out | Millennials-broke in cable internet and pirating media, Razrs & Blackberries | Gen Z- first to grow up with 2g+ smartphones... I tend to go by what they grew up with as opposed to what years they were born because as pointed out in this video, people can be born in the same year and still grow up with different technologies.

I think it’s funny that the term “millennials” wasn’t even coined till 1994. Not to mention it’s maybe been the last 10 years that it’s been widely associated with generations. My biggest gripe is how the professional community keeps changing the years.
@oaksparoakspar3144
@oaksparoakspar3144 7 жыл бұрын
Well, the problem is that it is an arbitrary designation (picked by those who graduated high school in 2000 or later) to denote cultural shifts (that don't care about round numbers on a calendar). Calling them the "internet" generation, since they grew up with it (rather than into it) or the "special snowflake" generation, since we all hate them (rather passionately) would make more sense in hindsight, but that is the problem we have had since the "Modern Age" (followed by the "Post Modern Age") - we are naming things as or before they happen, rather than with the clarity of hindsight.

tubekyle2 Of course the word "Millennials" was only coined in 1994, because only 1994 that Millennials were starting to get old enough to be relevant.
@tubekyle2
@tubekyle2 7 жыл бұрын
I didn't realize my broad and non-targeting statement was so...offensive. Actually, the term and you can google 'millennial' denotes those reaching young adulthood in the 21st century (the year 2000 and beyond ). Not 1994, and that's according to the 'noun' description of its definition. If that's what you meant by 'relevance'. Then again I'm not a firm believer in spelling things out.You'd understand that if you'd 'read' my statement. *Oh and I won't be responding after this...Good day.
@adamp_
@adamp_ 7 жыл бұрын
tubekyle2 What? nobody's offended, just because someone is disagreeing with you doesn't mean they're offended, it's called a discussion. What I was trying to say is that the reason the term was only coined in 1994 is that before that, Millennials were just a bunch of kids and baby, and only around 1994 they were starting to get old enough that wider trends could be observed, that's what I meant by "relevant."

That's me! :) If I wanted to play a shooter with someone else, I had to call my friend, ask him if he wanted to play Duke Nukem 3D with me, and decide whether he would call me or I would call him. Then, each of us would start the game, and whichever one was chosen to call would go into the "Multiplayer" menu, select the modem speed in baud, enter the dial-up initialization string, and then enter the friend's phone number. Hopefully, by that time, the _other_ friend, the one _receiving_ the call, had also gone into the "Multiplayer" menu and selected to "Receive" the call. If not, then the call wouldn't go through. _Then,_ the calling player activates the call, and the receiving player's _mom_ answers the phone, getting an earful of modem noise, and the receiving player has to yell "MOM!! DON'T ANSWER THE PHONE! I'M TRYING TO PLAY WITH JEFF!" So, then you try calling again, and this time it goes through, and you play for about fifteen minutes before your sister picks up the phone to call a friend, immediately ending your game, _RIGHT_ when you were about to kill your friend. After I finished college and got a real job, I got DSL. It was *a m a z i n g.*

generations are very much a thing.......your generation is a direct reflection of the kind of world you grew up in and thus the differance between each generation (Gen X was Bbay boomers, they saw a drastic increase int he population and lived in a world without the internet, Gen Y was the last to be born in a world without internet but grew up with it being a new thing, and Gen Z were born in a world where internet was commonplace as well as a drastic increase in PC culture. Both Gen Y and Z are also more politically correct than the generations before it and are more likely to be understanding and accepting of homosexuals and those of other genders, race, or religious views than Generation X). A full generation takes place every 20 years, not every 5 or 10 or whatever bullshit was shown here: it's every 20 years period. A LOT of things can change int he world in 20 years and the generations are a direct reflection of that. It's called Sociology and Anthropology: the study of society and life........and yes, everyone of their generation does display certain traits that show you're from that generation. Whether if be being argumentive of a specific detail (which is a Gen Y and Z trait, driven by how we have the inetrnet at our fingertips to directly look for the answers we want rather than having to rely on others of books), your views on religion or race (GenY and Z tend to be more lax in acceptance, GenX is stuck in beliefs still coming down from slave times), or even just how you like to spend your time (GenY might like to still go outside and be among nature, GenZ is more likely to spend time inside or in highly populated areas like a party, and GenX were more likely to spend time either alone or with small intimate gatherings like dinner parties as well as, like GenY, go outside and be among nature) etc etc etc. You might not like it, but it doesn't rule out hundreds of years of study on the human condition and generations that prove very point blank that each generation has certain characteristics that set them all apart.

Mr. Gohan - chill bro, why so emotional? , haha yeah people make up characteristics for generations but does not mean those characteristics are not there, nor does it mean that certain generations don't grow up in a certain way that learns from the past generations, It often flips based on society for each generation, but its used as a *general term* for characteristics of most but not all people of that generation... even tho I'm a millennial I grew up in poverty, I worked hard since I was 14 to provide and help my family which previously escaped communism, life is hard and requires hard work. Of course, there are millennial individuals that do not fit characteristics of millennials at all... but all depends on the environment and aspects of how that generation was raised and what they went through at a young age. - The reason I think highly of further generations and always think highly of further generation because they are the ones that have the opportunity to learn and adapt from any previous generations and characteristics... thus logically people should look up to newer generations characteristics in a *positive* manner, not just claim "generations aren't real"

haha. Except 90´s kid isn´t a term for a generation. 90 's kids just belong to the Millenial generation. Since they are still kids around the 2000´s. - But I think the 3rd generation is pretty accurate.

The joke is, older millennials complain about the youngers ones not knowing they're actually included in the millennial generation. This, all while the younger ones complain that they were born in the wrong generation.

I was born in 97 and I feel like I’m both. As a kid I remember VCR’s and the old cartoons from the 90s/early 2000s. And then I remember when iPhones first came out but I didn’t have one until my sophomore year of highschool and I didn’t get involved with social media until my freshman year of highschool. I remember 9/11 very distinctly but not enough to really grasp what’s happening and I remember the end of dial up. I definitely don’t feel like I’m grew up like the ones born in the 2000s and don’t feel like I grew up with the ones born in the 80s. It’s just a mix of both. And now I’m going to turn 21 got a job and engaged so I really don’t feel like a kid like gen Z. Maybe Y/Z?

Ella Rawson the cutoff is usually set at 2002 or 2004 (Some people say 2004,. Some say 2002 because post 9/11) I've always heard 1984-2004 because generations tend to last 20 Years

Tue Moi actually "The majority of researchers and demographers start the generation in the early 1980s, with many ending the generation in the mid-1990s. Australia's McCrindle Research regards 1980-1994 as Generation Y birth years. A 2013 PricewaterhouseCoopers report and Edelman Berland use 1980-1995. Gallup Inc., Eventbrite and Dale Carnegie Training and MSW Research all use 1980-1996. Ernst and Young uses 1981-1996. Manpower Group uses 1982-1996." (according to wikipedia)

Ella Rawson if we're going off Wikipedia, Wikipedia also says "There are no precise dates for when this cohort starts or ends; demographers and researchers typically use the early 1980s as starting birth years and the mid-1990s to early 2000s as ending birth years." And "Demographers William Straus and Neil Howe define millennials as born between 1982-2004." Since there technically is no set date and it can end in the mid 90s to early 2000s there is no real definite answer. I say early 2000s because since there's next to no debate that it started in the early to mid 80s and generations typically last around 20 years (most people say baby boomers are from 1946-1964, so nearly 20 years, and gen x was around 64-80 something then the millennials begin)

Tue Moi generations are usually 15 years, but the boundaries are often fuzzy and a little fluid. There are no hard cutoffs. A generation is defined by shared cultural experience and an identifiable set of traits or behaviors. It’s a little fuzzy.

I can confirm, Im from 98 and don't remember 9/11, although I do remember the day always being dedicated to rewatching the newsreels and talking about it in the years after. I also remember a time before wifi though, so I cant really relate to the generations on either side of me. Which is fine, I honestly think thats why people my age are so obsessed with nostalgia. We grew up seeing the world change, so we can respect the past, and also not take all the modern advancements for granted.
