I am very serious about getting into Columbia when I am older. I’ve selected my classes, and hopefully I can make a change to them if it’s not “enough.” I am from SD, so I don’t know how my chances will be affected because of that, but I am really going to try and prove how committed and ambitious I am once I finish high school. I’m starting next year, first year of high school, and I’m excited to be able to push myself.

From ND and recently got accepted to Columbia a few days ago. Being from a less advantaged school/region can actually help your admissions chances since we're not competing with California or New York, but rather, simply those from our same high school, city, and state. Good luck!

I’ve been dreaming about attending Columbia since I was 12. I’m a Freshman in high school now and I take the one AP course my school allows freshman to take (AP World History) and I have been researching Columbia for years now. I can’t wait for senior year when I apply!

Hey everyone, Vinay here. Just a quick clarification - the class size listed in the video (1,600 undergrads) is for each incoming class - the total undergrad enrollment at Columbia is ~6,200 students overall. That doesn't change how selective the admissions process is or any of the other advice in the video.
@eleniromano45043 жыл бұрын
I just want to point out that there are more than two undergraduate schools in Columbia...you have GS, The School of General Studies, and Barnard, which yes, is part of Columbia (you will have a Columbia degree from that college upon graduation.) At the very least GS should be included...it's a great option for students who have a break in their educational career.
@juderocks5 Жыл бұрын
I was going to suggest this. I took a break from school to start a business, then decided to be a police officer for a few years. I applied and was accepted to Columbia this year through the GS program. Columbia is one of the only Ivy schools that takes older students in that fashion, and it's a wonderful opportunity that most people forget about.

Are you less likely to get in if your highschool is less known? I go to a very very small private online high school but with really high education and good resources but not really known at all.

Question. Does the drop in chances from applying outside of New York/the northeast still exist if you apply early decision? I’m from Virginia and trying to boost my chances any way I can.

You guys are very lucky in India because you have colleges in every corner of India. But in Sri Lanka, that is not the case. We have only two IT / Engineering Universities that are very difficult to enter and those Universities are highly recognized by Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, MIT and Columbia. A lot of Sri Lankan students enter Columbia, Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, MIT every year on scholarship from the Sri Lankan government.

I think your Columbia total undergraduates population is inaccurate - should be 1,600 per class, not 400 per class - so the total is 6,000+.

This is honestly, just so unfair, because the people who are underprivelidged don't get the chance to get into Columbia University. Columbia University
@joshuavancuyck26693 жыл бұрын
Why not? They accept students on a case-by-case basis and that means that they review your application within the environment that you were in. If you did not have the opportunity to take many AP classes because your school did not offer it, they take this into account and it does not put you at any disadvantage. They also offer need-blind admissions, meaning that if you are from the US, they do not consider whether you are applying for financial aid or not, and if you get in, all of your tuition is paid for on a need-based basis. A very large proportion of the class each year are first-generation college students in their families too. The SATs are the only unfair part of this process if you are underprivileged, I can agree with you on that, but luckily this year those scores were not needed.
