Good call....and Collette perfectly encapsulates your two words: "deranged" and "brilliant." Cheri dangerously toes the line between a heartbreakingly sad and horrific reality, and inspired comic brilliance. A less talented actor would push this character and skit into mocking cruelty. Instead, we get that Cheri understands and has empathy for this character, which allows her to go all out into a comedic portrayal, and hilarity, instead of pity, is the payoff.

@@pamreffner1003 Ah, dancing on the razor's edge. A comic's life. Legends like Lenny Bruce, Pryor, Carlin, and so many more. If you're old enough, think of SNL and other comedy producers who, after 9/11, were tap dancing all around if and when to "make jokes" of ANY kind about anything even remotely close to that, granted, awful tragedy....even trying to be funny regarding planes, the TSA, and other ancillary elements. The phrase "too soon?" became a watchword in the biz for many months, even years! It'd be fun to interview Cheri re: the origins of her developing that character. Bet she knew/knows somebody similar! Cheri was so great on SNL. Her ability to stay in character was probably the all-time best amongst SNL cast members. Phil Hartman was the only other I can think of who was able to stay in character no matter how ridiculous the skit/character was.

Brilliant. This character is so nuanced. Her physical comedy and that exploding laugh is priceless. Her head movements as she reads her lines takes much concentration and disciplined practice, I’m sure. I get a Marx Brothers feel from this.
