What really pisses me off is Kate is so narcissistic that despite the fact that there is numerous instances of her treating Colin, particularly horrible if she just denies and denies and denies and cannot see that she is a bad mother. She's so convinced of her own perfection that if Collin has any issues it's squarely Jon's fault.

My heart ached at that part. It's so sad. He put thought into that gift and selected it because it was a mama bear with her cub and it reminded him of himself with his mom. He chose to gift it to her as something special to cherish and remind her of their relationship. Her response was cold, unloving, criticizing and sent the message that he chose a bad gift and she didn't appreciate it. Kids choose gifts from the heart when they choose something like that. She shattered it. She's a monster and I didn't like her attitude even back when I watched the show as a teenager. My heart goes out to Collin and all of his siblings and to Jon. Collin, if you are reading this - just know despite how you’ve been treated and the experiences you had to experience, just know - continuing to have a positive mindset can get you far in life. No matter how your mom treated you - good or bad, and same with your dad, you have nothing but nice things to say and that says a lot about your personality. No ill intentions or mean thoughts, shows how strong you are. Also the fact that out of everything you discussed, you got emotional talking about how much you love your siblings is amazing. Yes your parents are your parents and will be there forever, but you can’t forget the bond between your own siblings is just as strong. Keep working hard, don’t push yourself too much, know your boundaries & remind yourself to slow down if you’re balancing too much. Always take care of yourself, but always strive to be the best you can 💓

I don't agree with or like the majority of things Kate said/did, but... to be absolutely fair, Collin had long term behavior, diagnosed opposition defiance & more. Kate could not have gotten him into inpatient care without many doctor, specialist & psychologists making that decision. Jon wasnt' around for any of the kids after they split... until he went & got Collin. Jon has also had issues & dealt w/ bouts of violence, etc. from Collin since he's been there too. Collin, at his young age wanting to ignore or dismiss the issues he's had & has, not good either, imho. I think all of them are wrong, personally. Kate is no angel but imho did the best she could trying to raise those 8 kids totally on her own. Jon was off, worried about "Jon" & Collin was probably, for all we know, right where he should've been. I mean, seems the treatment somewhat helped him be who he's becoming. It sucks for all 8 kids, most of all.

This young man shows absolutely no form of disability at all. Kate said he was different, wasn’t like the other kids, was difficult etc. I see a very intelligent young man. Very well spoken and polite. Has some pretty awesome goals of wanting to be a marine and to be a dad someday. He’s working and in highschool with the goal of graduating. He’s also capable enough and responsible enough to be driving. The accident was just that an accident. Im failing to see why he needed to be institutionalized not once but twice. It doesn't actually state what the special needs were, like it could be legit, but more along the lines of dyslexia, then the mom blew it up & used to it so she could get leverage and find something to manipulate for her agenda. Just like he was saying-- he knew she had an agenda So instead of Mom getting son the resources he needed, she went the way a lot of psycho parents do-- either get you no help at all and lock you up in a room, or they lock you up in an institution- eitherway, brainwashing their scapegoat. I think it's one of the reasons so many of us that do have special needs, get a bad rap just for being alive. I watched them as babies and toddlers while I was a daycare teacher and pregnant with my first baby. Their show was on in the hospital room while I was in labor. Colin was always her “difficult” kid in her eyes. Because he was independent and spoke his mind and didn’t give in to her bullying. Even as a toddler she came up against him so damn hard. None of this is surprising. Aiden was her angelic boy, Joel was her silly love bug - Colin was too aware of his own autonomy for her. And Hannah was always a mini-mama (not kate, just a very mothering little girl) - I’m not surprised she stuck by him. From what I remember, Alexis was also like Colin, so was Maddie, but somehow they were tolerated more - maybe just by being girls Kate saw herself in them? I don’t know. It broke my heart for Colin back then and still does now. I can actually see a clip of him sitting at a little plastic picnic table in their garage or driveway and her being angry at him for being “defiant” in some way (don’t remember) - I remember thinking, “Jesus the kid just needs you to love him and be patient with him.” Hurts my heart to see how much he’s been through. Thank god Jon has been there for him - he probably feels for him a lot.

Heartbreaking that his siblings don’t even reach out to him💔 His mother did so much damage to this sweet kid & it’s unthinkable that she would continue to stay away. Why? He’s a sweet young man & his mother is a narcissistic monster. Wishing him the best as he navigates through life. 💛

The kids are still in high school. Once they get away from her and can make their own thoughts and have their own opinions maybe they will. In the meantime, she’s in control of everything and I’m sure they can’t.

She's probably staying away cuz I'm sure she doesn't want to face guilt or know that she did wrong. And I agree with other comment probably the others will hopefully reach out once there away from there mom's grasp

I remember watching the show as a kid, thinking how similar Kate's energy was to my mother's. I found out years later that my mother is a narcissist. I figured out the hard way that the way to dealing with a narcissist is not dealing with them at all. Run and don't look back. You're better off.

Amen! I had a narcissist. I eventually ran but it took several times before I never looked back. The mother should be ashamed of keeping the kids from him and also by all of her actions.

As someone that watched the show, I'm proud of Colin as if he's one of my own family members. Jon isn't perfect but he fought for his kid and his well being and for that I'm grateful, because Colin is doing so well now. What he said about Hannah touched my heart.

Jon did nothing wrong. It was Kate who had the affair and insisted on the appearance of still being together for the show, and finally it was Kate who sought the divorce when Jon refused to tape and tried to keep his kids off TV. Lastly, it was Jon who saved Collin!

What's so sad is that these children didn't sign-on to being put in the reality-tv spotlight, and how sad to hear him say that he hadn't spoken/seen his siblings in 5 or 6 years. Collins seems to be doing very well, and I imagine he will go on to do great things.

Kate has always reminded me of my mom - me and my 5 siblings used to watch this show and we would make comments about Kate and my mom would be completely on her side about everything. My mom is also terrible towards my dad but they’re still together. Me and my siblings have always said behind their backs how we don’t understand why our dad is still with her because we continuously watch her verbally abuse him (and sometimes physically during arguments by throwing things at him). She used to be like that to us too when we were kids but now that we’re adults she’s gotten better which I think is because she knows we could choose to cut ties with her if we wanted. When we lived with her, we had no choice but to put up with her.

Breaks my heart that a mom who didn’t know how to handle her kid sends him away. So unfair. It’s amazing that he has Hannah who knows what he has been through and went with the same upbringing can be such a relief. They can be each others rock and understand each other like no one else can.

Most important is the fact that this institution didn’t see the need to assess the mother as well. It is easy to tossed your kid and go live life like he is the problem, he will thrive away from her.

I'm not saying he was troubled enough to be in an institution... but to watch an interview and decide everything about that person based on edited short interview seems inadequate to get a good realistic impression.. Kate has huge issues... so did her husband... but this boy may have been having extreme problems.. he certainly had reasons to be troubled.. being a premie of 6 and on TV all tge time along with the personality problems with his parents?.... but I certainly wouldn't decide how great a person is doing based on a short interview on TV.
