WOW, nice job Adam. The Collings is so clear and projects as expected of a Collings acoustic even with older strings. Collings are "take no prisoners" type guitars that will certainly be heard in a jam. It'll be interesting to hear that same Collings in 20 years to see what difference age makes - if any. The Martin is much warmer and softer in it's tone signature to my ears having a clear advantage in moving toward a vintage tone as one would expect from the Martin. The PW sounds very similar to the Martin and I doubt I could tell them apart if not looking at them. You have three very nice acoustic dreads.

You should look into the Collings CW Indian. It’s their version of Clarence White/Tony Rice’s guitar. Which is what the Martin LSV is based on. You’ll probably have an easier time finding the Collings, and they’re superb instruments.

Thanks Bill! The SC are probably the best wearing strings I’ve ever played, the strings that were on my Collings for this video are still in service and they still sound too good to change in my opinion. I’ve only ever used these, EJ17s, or D’Addario NBs and I think the SC are the best for my Collings but he PW sounds better with the NBs. They are 3 great guitars. As usual listeners substitute their taste for what is actually there. I listen to lots of folk and roots music. So I prefer both the Martin and PW. Like old jeans, the tone is softened and comfortable. From that perspective, the Collings sounds really crisp and sharp. Too sharp for me. Not criticizing the Collings. It is great. Strange, I greatly prefer the Pre-War. The Martin is also great, though being a Rosewood guitar it's a bit of an unfair comparison to two Mahogany guitars. The Collings is nice but I don't like the way it voices the notes nearly as well as the other two. BTW, my impression changes if I listen through my studio monitors as apposed to the headphones I listened through.

That martin has so many sad stories to tell. the Pre-War sounds just like an old Martin though, it's super "mahogany" deep. I'm a Rosewood guy so I picked that Martin. It sounds deeper. This is largely a matter of subjective taste and what you grew up hearing. I own a 91 Martin Custom 15 and a 08 Santa Cruz TR. The SC fits nicely between the Martin and the Collings which almost has too much clarity for me. I prefer the warmer undertones of Martins. The SC is more balanced than the Martin but with less low end and with a lot of the Collings clarity. Very nice comparison video and great playing.

I gotta echo a few of the others that chimed in-- I really liked that Collins’

Collings ALL DAY! The Martin and the Pre-War sound great, but too quiet and muffled for me. I'm in the same boat with my two dreads, an Aged Tone Bourgeois Vintage D with torrefied Banjo Killer bracing and a Reimagined D41. My 41 sounds great, but quickly becomes boring to me, due to bass-centric, mid-scooped tone. My Bourgeois, on the other hand is LOUD, dynamic and has tons of clarity. I can see how it could be too much for someone who prefers that classic Martin tone, but I'll take "In your face" over boring any day on the week! Your playing was OUTSTANDING too!!

@adambrown71123 жыл бұрын
I’ve never played a standard Collings D1 which was a the closest thing to a standard D18. I have played some D1As and D1ATs and really there’s no comparison, those Collings models are going to be quite a bit louder, responsive, and balanced than a D18. I traded a D18 up for this D1AT and I’ve never regretted it, but I do think the D18 is the best all around guitar Martin makes and if I could only own one guitar and my budget was less than 3k I’d be keeping a D18, you can usually find used D18GEs for around $2700 which will have upgraded bracing and an Adi top, they are awesome guitars.

The D1AT is a hell of a guitar, I think it’s one of the best all around models available today and I’m happy to have mine.
