What a final. I got chills watching. Nail-biting contest. As Darcy Moore said, who said a low-scoring game couldn’t be entertaining? It was one of the best games I’ve seen. 98,000 crowd was insane. It could’ve gone either way, but Pies were better in the end. As good as GWS were, a few things hurt them (like players going for shots instead of passing, and not kicking straight). Uncharacteristic of them. De Goey was outstanding. If there was a tackle, he broke out of it. Thrilling game. Devastating for GWS, but Pies were deserving winners.

@@Marcelo-hf5xl "the umpires were bad for both teams" I disagree, thought this was one of the best umpired games in the season, they actually let the game flow and not blow a whistle for every petty minor infraction. This is how all games should be umpired imo. 50/50 over analytical BS soft frees and most of the 50metre penalties are ruining the game, it was refreshing that they let the players play the game for the change. Only 24 combined frees were given this game, usually it's 40-50 per game which is ridiculous.

Toby Greene crying after the match got me 🥹🥹🥹 They were so close. Could’ve gone either way. It’s been a helluva season. 15th on the ladder at Rd 12, record-breaking away wins at so many different venues, back-to-back finals games with no rest, a 6 day turnaround for the prelim, and they only went down by 1 point. They’ll be back even better next season .

I was there in this Prelim.....I was also there in 2019 Prelim.......I know how both feel, I was crying after both.....but for different reasons. 2019 was utter heartbreak.......2023 was utter joy and relief. I am not a person that is usually confident, cocky or anything of the sort, I was so nervous leading up to the game, but when I heard the Giants themesong come on and heard the absolute chorus of boos.......all of a sudden I got this guy feeling and said right then and there "No......this time we are winning this, we are going to put them down in the ground today, we are going to avenge 2019 and make them feel the pain that we did that day, they won't even hear their fans, we will reign cheers on our fans." and we did, we belted out the team song and even though we only won by a single point, we did so well.

Non-Collingwood supporters seething at the umpires - to be fair they were terrible on both ends. - Mihocek getting flipped on his backside inside 50 and getting man-handled all game - Paying 50 to GWS for a protected area violation that would never pay in any other game - Sending Cox off for a ripped shirt - really? Making up rules on the spot lol - Crisp tackle on GWS, who then blatantly threw the ball (last 2 mins of Q4) - Toby Green dragged the ball back and made no attempt to dispose of it, holding the ball (last 2 mins of Q4) - Blatant high on Darcy Moore (final mintue of Q4) The umpires put their whistles away in the last 2 mins of the game, both teams had their oppurtunity, but there can only be one winner

People will also forget the Papley decision which robbed Collingwood of the preliminary final last year + the 3 50 metre penalties in favour of Sydney.....but hardly anyone complained about that. At the end of the day, that's just footy!

That being said, the umpires missed frees for both teams. Umpires (like players) are susceptible to having a bad night. That's footy, at the end of the day!

One of the best games I’ve seen all year in terms of pace and action, one of the poorest games I’ve seen this year also, in terms of umpiring. Don’t let finals footy be an excuse to ignore blatant free kicks on either side, pay them. Nick Dacos’ tackle on Greene was as high as they come, hand wrapped around his neck for a good 2 seconds. I’ve been critical of players ducking into tackles but this was as free as they come. GWS should have won the game but due to their selfishness in the forward half they lost the game, I counted 4 easy goals they could have had if the players didn’t take the selfish option. They will learn from this and rebound next year. Congratulations to collingwood for making the GF

this is how the game should be played, a team getting ever so slightly ahead, and the other chasing the game, and the team being chased putting on all stops to lock the other team down/ stay ahead on the scorecard I know its bad for the fans who cant stand the unbearable tension / uncertainty of a close game when one false move means theres no tomorrow - and some people prefer the final quarter of a 3 hour game to be 'a victory lap' for half an hour , but its a good advert for the game for those who dont follow it (eg me)

Collingwood missed by a point in the prelim last year to Sydney (who went on to get smashed) and GWS beat us by a 4 points in the 2019 prelim. (who also went on to get smashed). A poor spectacle. I'm a Collingwood supporter too but about comparing this to the FIFA World Cup: more popular ≠ better. Of course an English sport like soccer is far more popular than an Australian sport like Aussie Rules. The English invented modern spectator sports in general and soccer is a far more accessible game to play and was promoted around the world from the very beginning. Australian Rules was originally invented as a method to keep cricketers fit during the winter, it then turned into a local spectator sport later on. But at the end of the day, whether it's the AFL or the FIFA World Cup, it's merely just a game.
