A work of art. The radio and the restoration.

I'd say you have done as good a job restoring this receiver as Paul Carlson does. Both of you do world class museum quality work. Job well done my friend.

I am in the midst of doing this exact same process. Have replaced the main filter cap, all the Bettys or Bumble Bees and they are referred to, the electrolytics, a few of the micas and a couple of resistors. Found a couple of bad tubes and now have the front panel off for cleaning and polishing the knobs. Everything is a learning process with this radio. Thankfully I was able to join the Collins group, to get some help from the Elmers out there in radio land. The strangest problem I found so far was a dead spot about 3-4Kc's wide, in exactly the same center spot on the dial, on every band. Yesterday I found it after much searching and probing. The dial cord on these machines, is a linen covered stranded metallic one and it had 2-3 wires broken and splayed out. As those wires passed over the right side top pulley, one of them was contacting a terminal on the noise limiter pot and shorting out the signal on every band.

It's realy great video to whom challenges the maintenace like me. I have struggled to remove dial parts from the shaft and found you are using a puller, that is at time 1:42. In my case, this plate was already enough loosen and freely rotate from the shaft but can't be dettached. Was it same for you? And how didi you attach again to the origial position? Using puller again? JJ1HMR

My latest projects have been 2 Hammarulund HQ 129 X Receivers. not as complex as Collins radio but still pretty good set 11 tubes in it , Radio sits on work bench and fix little at a time. im on the second one now. SSB sounds excellent on the Hammarlunds. CW too is good, Ham operators did wonders before with these sets. very good radios and you can still fix them today with bit of tube know how. ohhh and AM modulation on short wave or AM broad cast band you cant beat it really. Beautiful set on AM broad cast band at night. excellent. no little transistor radio going compare with 11 tube set. The Collins radios top of line sets. I had one before. Worth all the work to restore them. . And again thank you sharing the video of your Collins beautiful set it is . Tony ve4akf
