This is Colmanara (Oncostele) Catatante Pacific Sun Spots orchid, which is a cross between Oncidium Sphacetante and Oncostele Wildcat. It produces rusty orange flowers on a tall flower spike that can branch out. The flowers are not fragrant, but they have a sort of plastic smell to them, not powerful though. Easy to care for and really vigorous, like any Wildcat :) Enjoy!

My colmanara has these spots on the pseudobulbs and leaves as well. It doesn't seem to bother the plant and I totally agree with you! And we're on opposite sides of the planet almost, so I think that says a lot!

I leave mine outside under my patio all year long and it has four spikes of flowers this year! I live in Zone 9 in California. I barely water it and it’s in loose soil. Love your channel !

I just got one of these and reddit identified it for me. Though the employee did say oncidium I thought she said obsidian and I was confused. Mine has so many leaves and psuedobulbs I think it might need a bigger pot soon already. I'm excited for all the buds to bloom since it only has one bloom with lots of buds and 2 more spikes coming!

Hi dannie, my colmanara is growing a spike and how exciting it was! However..I noticed that the spike is cracked! Do you think it will grow anyway as a (small) part is still attached? I'm so upset! Thank you have a nice day x

Hi Dani, I bought an oncostele with spike and buds and it is pot bound. About once a week I let it soak from the bottom of the pot for about ten minutes. It seems to be doing well. Is there anything I should be doing?

it is a big plant with tall spikes only because each flower is equally large. you should also say that and place your finger next to a flower to illustrate its size. as it is, i think i can estimate it to be 2/3 of a finger length because i can barely compare it to your finger.

Hi Danny! Congrats for your acheivements and big orchid garden! I had also a Colmanara (Oncostele) Catatante Pacific Sun Spots, I liked it very much. I was my second Cambria. After the flowers faded and fell down, the leaves of the pseudobulb started to dry not from the top but near the pseudobulb, and fell like being cut. I thought that it is a normal process. But when the pseudobulb left all the leaves I checked the root system and I discovered that it had died. Having only a dried pseudobulb without leaves and roots at all, I threw the plant away thinking that I could do nothing for it anymore as with the other combria I did not have such problems. So, now I wonder if I could save it?

That is the most amazing flower. A friend gave me a plant, which she thought was this (complete with spots on the leaf), last year. It hasn't flowered for me yet but I have my fingers and toes crossed that it is like yours. If not, this is definitely going on my wish list. It looks very good with Hansueli 'Isler'.

Gardening at Douentza yes I like how the colors of these 2 orchids look together :D fingers crossed it is this one :D it will bloom most probably this year, sometimes they need a bit of time to adjust if they went through a shock of division or a bad case of no roots :)

Mine had 5 flower spikes this year. All spikes died off and have been trimmed two months ago. It has 7 pseudo bulbs and I just noticed today a VERY SMALL new growth. As it is a robust orchid, what can I do to promote more new growth?!?! Help!

I just purchased this orchid today and mine smells just as much and of the same as my Nelly isler. And so did everyone of the individuals i checked(about 10-15) at the florist. So i guess you can get lucky

Growing Things it's always rewarding to watch them bloom for the first time and seeing what they are, I used to do that a while back, buy discounted orchid without flowers :P but when my collection grew I stopped, I was sure I'd get a lot of duplicates lol

The color in that orchid is beautiful. it would go along with the other two that I have. the burr and bartley Schwartz. I just noticed that I lost the tag out of my burrageara. But I believe it would be good with the two

I wish I could upload a photo of mine. It is 3 feet tall!!! I think mine might be a miniature, my bulbs aren't as big nor are the flowers, they are about the size of a 50¢ coin. But then again, I live in Montana, USA, so maybe that has a lot to do with it?

Hi danni that's the spotting on my leaves but it's really weird as I think it's less of an i breeding issue and more of nutrient defficiency spots as all the orchids which have them are growing a lot and don't have very many pseutobulbs to reserve energy plus on my cymbidium I have found something weird a new shoot for a growth is appearing under a non fully developed new growth weird right? Plus looking forward to those repotting vids😉

Andrew Usher the spots can be hard to identify really, I have all sorts of spots on my leaves, starting with spider mite damage, to bad media spotting and ending with natural spotting.. the colmanaras and some oncidiums came with them, they all had them and in many pictures I see them. So I am guessing they really are related to some genetics :)

I recently got an oncidium sherry baby three weeks ago. I waited about a week after repotting to water it because I've been having problems with white mold forming in my recently repotted orchids, I kind of think the medium I bought is contaminated. :( I noticed my oncidium's bulbs are not staying plump but it is growing two flower spikes. Should I be worried about its health? I've read oncidiums don't start producing new growths until after they have bloomed.
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 9 жыл бұрын
Mevlinn Gusick Most probably the media is contaminated yes, or you are not cutting all dead roots. Mold usually forms on dead material. That is true, most of the times Oncidiums start new growths after flower spikes. The bulbs are shriveling because they are struggling to grow the spikes, they take up a lot of energy, this is the reason why I cut all spikes on sick orchids. So it will have to be your decision, if the orchid gets horribly shriveled, you might want to give up the spikes until the orchid becomes healthy again.

I have and oncidium type and it has those spots too, but i don't think it's a colmanara, the pseudobulbs are small, maybe it is in her parentage... or not, i don't know :D Funny thing is I was about to ask the shaping pseudobulb thing, I'm really happy for that video :D Off topic: do you think household led lighting can affect orchids? I don't know much about those growing lights and so, but few of my phals recieve led lighting almost daily for a few hours, by the way they are in a rather shady room, and they seem to like that. Even the flowerspike decided to put out new buds, which didn't happen til this year for me.
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 9 жыл бұрын
Zane Leroux Hi Zane, the LED are ok for orchids, if they supply enough light, but this depends on the species of orchids. Phal don't need too much bright light, they can do well in intermediate light as well. I'll make the psb shaping video soon :)

What potting medium is it in and how often do you feed it. Nice.
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 9 жыл бұрын
andrea g depends on your environment really, I usually use a mix of bark and sphagnum moss for all my oncidiums, coupled with side holes on the sides of the pot. I water about every 5-6 days in summer and about every 10 days in winter, without soaking it in winter time. So just take into account the temperature and humidity of your environment, that will dictate what potting media you should use and when to water it. Will make a video on this soon though ;)
