HI Bob 😍💐 thank you for your feedback and for letting me know that this video was helpful / interesting with the content and information. 🫶🏼 oyster shell is amazing! In Kenya, many of the orchids that were growing in the landscape, when not in tree canopies, would be chiselled or mounted on ancient coral rocks to grow wildly on that. If they were chiselled into the rock, as the natural ground on the coast was old reef old coral with a lot of sand to fill in all the gaps, they would have the appearance to be growing in the sand only. It was so simple yet so effective. 😍 I never thought twice about the salt in the air, or possibly in the rock and still, the oncidiums and many cattleyas absolutely loved their location. Even angraecums while small at the time, were chiselled into that rock at the base of palm trees and then left to grow up the trees. Which they did, like ninjas!! Amazing visuals that I have in my brain. I miss those visuals so much. Being able to go and look at the specimens and stand below them see the root network doing it's spaghetti and seeing those that were at ground level taking over. It was a magical time. The orchids didn't always look the part because wildlife and such would take some structures out, but it was all beautiful to me 😃 thank you for watching and thank you for the flashback by mentioning oyster shells 🫶🏼 hope you had a wonderful day ❤️🌸

🌸🥷🏼Kris San 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 hi! Thank you!! I am glad that you can find use in them. Even if there is a genus that is not specifically mentioned in a card, sometimes, just having a format helps to understand what another orchid needs, without being bombarded with info from a google search. This way, it is like having bullet points without feeling overwhelmed. It helped me a lot, back in the day, because I was getting this collection arriving with 3 boxes / week, so I needed to be prepared for what was coming. Revamping was fun, adding other genus that I do not have was also useful for me to get a refresher on. I am glad that you like them 👍🏼 I have recipe cards as well, if you would like to check out that video? It is not to say what you should do, but why I do what I do and how I keep track as to who gets what, without even having to check any notes. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aHWVdIKCZt2BgJI in case you are interested. I so appreciate your comment, Kris! I want videos like these to be for Orchid Ninjas only, however, I am way behind my target for the growth of my channel, so, unfortunately they are out for the public. But this is the kind of content (The MasterClass) that I would really prefer to have on for the Orchid Ninjas. One day, I hope that I can make the distinction and close this playlist down and keep it for 'us' 🤞🏼 thank you, so much for your support, for watching and your kind comment! I hope you had a great day, 🌸🥷🏼

I didn't realize I had oncidiums when I bought the coconut orchid, miltoniopsis, and now the psychopsis, but they all have pseudobulbs and are thirsty. Compared to the coconut orchid and miltoniopsis, I prefer the thicker leaves of the psychopsis. They seem to be better for preventing pests and they're mottled.
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids Ай бұрын
😍Hi Joe 💐 amazing to have another piece of the puzzle fall into place, huh? 👍🏼 I agree that the psychopsis are prettier orchids and unless there is a spike to contend with, they also do not take up so much space. I would not have bought a maxilliaria if I knew that they could not stay outside during the winter, here. Just because of their size 😅 if you are into the fleshy, sturdy type of leaves like the psychopsis, check out Mule Ear Ocidiums. I don't think the leaves are mottled, but they have a similar look to those of the psychopsis 👍🏼 thank you so much for watching, Joe! Have yourself a wonderful day 🫶🏼❤️🌸

@@NinjaOrchids There were two videos of the Mule Ear orchid (Trichocentrum) that had nice color patterns. One video was by Bumblebee. I wonder how long the flower spike lasts compared to a psychopsis. I guess a long flower spike is another sign that the orchid could be classified as an oncidium. I like the ones with the star shape, white and pink pattern (maybe Aliceara?), but I'm totally out of space right now. 😅
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids Ай бұрын
Yes, Alicearas have the star shaped blooms and usually smell of cracked pepper. I have the Aliceara Peggy Ruth Carpenter, which has similar blooms to what you describe. Watch out though, when you look into getting an Aliceara, while they are vigorous, they do have a bit of a climbing habit which is obnoxious when growing in pots. 🙄

Rafiki Sue 😍💐 sawa sawa hapa 😘 na wewe?? I am glad that you have some left, Sue, even if they are the weaker ones. I am sure that bringing them through is a lovely project to have and well, they won't be sickly for that long... I am certain of that 👍🏼 oh, ... I am an instruction follower, because it saves me from thinking too hard. With the dyslexia, I can tell you... a, b, c , 1, 2, 3 and I am all over it. Eventually, I will come out and ask questions and then I want to know why, but first, I have to have things in easy to understand steps. What a learning curve that was, up to the age of 36, when I understood what was 'wrong' with me 🤪 I used to read dictionaries like others read novels, just to see words and learn how to place the letters. Impressed my dad with my German after a year 😂😂 after the German language went through a reform, I bought the newest dictionary I could and started reading from foreword to end (true story!) then I could correct him on the new spelling 🤣 so far so good... gimme instructions, gimme a week, and then I come with questions and if they don't make sense, I can become a leach 😂😂 much love to you, rafiki!! It is always so good to see you in the comments! Thank you so very much for watching 😘❤️🌸

🌸🥷🏼Ann San 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 hi!! Thank you so much for your feedback, for watching and for being so encouraging, I so appreciate it 🙏🏼 it really is all relative... I don't grow any miltoniopsis for the reasons of my climate. Same with odontoglossum... love the blooms, but I am not needing orchids that grow super large in a limited winter space, and having them outside to hopefully tolerate those conditions, I do not want to go through that and possibly failing. Just because my Masai Red can handle it, doesn't mean I am going to think that cool growers can as well. Just when we get complacent, you know how quickly orchids will tell us.... naaahhh 😅 hope your day was fabulous, 🌸🥷🏼. Have a lovely evening ❤️🌸

The leaf color break can be avoided, but if it is a genetic thing, then it is something that we learn to live with, as long as the orchid is otherwise growing and blooming well 👍🏼 so good to see you again 😃 thank you so much for commenting! @@NinjaOrchids It’s good to hear from you, too. I’m totally frustrated. I’ve lost too many orchids lately. I’m not sure but I think the issue is a bacterial infection. I’ve lost most of my phals. So I’m sterilizing media as much as I can before any repots. I should probably use a systemic fungicide/bactericide but I’ve held back because I have 2 cats and one sometimes chews some of the leaves. Meanwhile, learning about the nutritional needs of the orchids may help me improve the strength of the orchids to fight off infection. I’m reviewing some of your older videos and those of some of the other channels to see what else I can learn to help my orchids do better. Wish me luck. I’ll get in touch if anything comes to mind. Thanks so much for your feedback. Stay well. 💗💗💗🙏🤞🙋‍♀️

goodness, someone went all out on this one. Strangely, Oncidium are one that I struggle with, I think I want to water them too often and I can't seem to stop myself. I've got a massive Bratonia Estrelita outside in a basket hanging high in the tree and, well, I know that one doesn't get watered a lot. But in the house, I panic that they're getting too dry and I rot the roots. I'm getting better, but the struggle is real. And I have got to do better with the Tiger Crow that Yoshi just sent me. I've been searching for it, he happened to find it in someone else's greenhouse, I can't lose it.

I have no Miltoniopsis because I don't want to have to deal with a hybrid that I do not know the parentage, and if whatever is in it, would tolerate the warmer months of the year. Getting the warmer varieties would then pose a problem during the colder months of the year, soooo, yeah! It hurts my heart to see them at the garden centre, because I doubt very much that even 10% that are sold live on to see another bloom, or they just die right where they are at, when not sold. Positive thinking is a great approach though, and then... the feeling of success is priceless 👍🏼👍🏼❤️

Good, comprehensive video. I keep my Odontiodas and Odontoglossums in an unheated room in mid autumn through mid spring, which is when they seem to be happiest. Outside, they take night temperatures as low as 6 to seven degress Celcius without complaints. I would not say that the classic Odontiodas are easy, but I will also say that it is hard to generalize. If you look up the individual Odontioda (now unhelpfully labelled 'Oncidium') on Orchidroots, the parentage will give you a hint at how heat tolerant it is. The higher the percentage of Odontoglossum crispum/Oncidium alexandrae, the more stressed it will be by prolonged exposure to high temperatures. On the other hand, Psychopsis I would class as 'easy' - in terms of temperature requirements, it is an ideal house plant.

Hi Nina, discoloration on leaf tips on oncidiums is an indicatiion of over watering. I grow oncidiums mounted. Oncidiums love indirect sunlight and humidity at the same time. Mounted oncidiums throw a lot of aerial roots. By observing the root tip, we can gauge the health of the plant. Recently I have added two Sherry babies and two, three oncidium ( yellow long flower) all mounted to the guava trunk I got from our neighbour. Waiting to see the results. Oncidiums with expert seal, I don't want as I grow out. Thank ypu so much Nina for the ton of information.
