This week, we delight in amazing Alsatian wines through a white wine tasting, explore the enchanting city of Colmar, France (where we're staying), and visit Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg. Colmar is beautiful! We disagree about whether Haut-Koenigsbourg is worth it!
Colmar is on the Alsace Wine Route, and the wines we try are varied and interesting! All clearly different from one another - a Moscato, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Blanc, and Riseling. Colmar city itself has an intriguing history! We did our wine tasting at Domaine Martin JUND.
As a border town between France and Germany, control of the region changed hands many times. The influence of both cultures is self-evident in everything from place names to the food and especially the architecture! Colmar is the French city that looks German.
Finally we visit the hilltop Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg. It takes some effort to get there by public transport. The foundations of this Chateau date back to the 12th century, and the interior was carefully restored in the early 1900s. Is the Chateau worth it? Watch to find out!
THANKS FOR WATCHING!!

I appreciate the information about the castle. This is really helpful because we have limited time and I agree, I am not so interested to see a castle that was renovated as recent as 100 years ago. Love the different perspectives between you both and honesty too! So helpful in planning our trip.

Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg is definitely worth it, even given the long hike we had from way down the hill!

What a cute area! “Have baguette, will travel”. lol 😂 Enjoyed seeing the wine. I didn’t expect to hear bagpipe music outside a French/German castle. Cool!

The music was unexpected and sort of reminded me of a Renaissance Fair atmosphere! They did a good job of making that visit fun. 😊 Thanks for watching!!

15:42 If you want to see a real castle that has never been destroyed and reconstructed. That has a continuous history and is in the same hands since the 11th century, you should visit Burg Eltz in Germany near Luxemburg (it was the castle that was printed on the 1000DM notes).

My mother used to have that same problem when drinking red wine. She eventually got over it by drinking small amounts and building up her tolerance.

Ohhhhh, she also used to throw up? I've never run into anyone else with the same problem! You think I could possibly change it, given time? That's an interesting idea. Thank you!! 🍷

@@TalesFromOurPocket Yes, she did throw up after drinking just 1 glass of red wine. I'll ask her more about it. I don't think she had a problem with Chardonnay though.

Hi there, I wonder if Heather has an issue with Oak or malolactic fermentation. Both of these occur in Chardonnay and red wines. ( I checked with a winemaker friend of mine. You could try a Chardonnay which is explicitly not aged on oak and has not undergone malolactic fermentation to check. I am enjoying your videos. Cheers Rosemary

Your problem with wines might be connected to the sulphites added. Sulphites are pretty much in all alcohol drinks mainly as a preservative for colour... for some people sulphites are deadly, especially asthmatics, other people react with other types of allergic reaction. I discovered how deadly sulphites were to me when I began making my own humus from canned chick peas and a variety of other apparently healthy foods also treated with sulphites, it destroyed the thiamin in my body and made me seriously ill. I was on my way to developing beri-beri a condition that can be fatal. It's hard to believe you can get that eating a normal balanced diet, but you can due to the sulphites ability to destroy thiamin. It was just lucky that I had experienced food allergies when younger so was very aware of how food can effect me. I realised in the end all the foods that made me feel most ill were laden with sulphites. It took me over a year to recover and even now if I have food with sulphites when I'm eating out I can feel a strange pulsing feeling in body and my heart starts beating faster for 20 minutes or more and I feel a lack of oxygen. I've not heard of anyone throwing up due to sulphites, but it possible it may have that effect. Maybe your body is violently rejecting the sulphites to keep you from harm, similar to food poisoning? Or maybe it's some other chemical they add to wine? Yes, it's best to avoid sulphites... they should never be allowed to be added to food and drink. I discovered your channel today and have been watching for a few hours... really enjoying your lovely travel videos.. I shall be back again!🥰👏

Welcome to our channel and thank you for watching!! I've actually wondered about sulphites before, but there are more sulphites in white wine than in red (and literally the only white wine I've had trouble with is chardonnay). It's the most bizarre thing!! I'm glad you figured out what you were reacting to! 😊😊 I'm tempted to try more reds, to see if there are some I can drink - but the reaction to them really sucks. A quarter of a glass is all it takes for me to throw up. 😳 I wish I knew what it was! Thanks for the suggestion!!
