#Colocasia Esculenta, also known as Elephants Ear Plant or '#Taro'.#elephantearplant
The rhizome (bulb or corm), is edible when cooked but can be poisonous raw. Wear gloves as parts of the plant may cause irritation to the skin.
The plant has huge leaves up to 60cm which resemble Elephant's ears, hence the name.
These amazing tropical plants require warmth and moisture to thrive. In the UK they are not hardy and require special treatment over winter. Move to a cool place, always above freezing, stop watering and allow to dry out so that the plant becomes dormant.
They propagate themselves by producing tiny side growths. These can be divided off and planted as a separate plant.
I have tried slicing some off with part of the corm as an experiment, subscribe to my channel and I will update you.
If you have any question please comment below.
If you are uk based and are interested in purchasing a plant please email me mark@marksgardenuk.com

Normal price in my country for a taro shoot is $2 NZD (about $1.20 USD). I've paid more but those were bigger, more mature shoots.

Hi Mark. I’m new to Alocasia plants but have recently purchased three, two Regal Shield and one Low Rider. I paid £21.99 for each plant from my local garden centre. I looked on the internet before I found those and they we’re asking silly money. I put them out for the first time today and they wilted. The temp was only in the 60’s, is that to hot for them? I live in the North of England. Good look with the nursery.

Hi carol. Mine are colocasiq whereas yours are alocasia. Alocasia is a houseplant which can go outside for our summers. Perhaps you made the move too suddenly and shocked them? It might be an idea to take them back in, let them recover and then gradually harden them off over a few days gradually. Hope that helps. Mark

You can save water by just 'forking' the roots with bonsai rake or fork rather than spray them.
