PlantzNThings wow you must be up north, we can do that here in south because it really doesn’t stay cold for that long, longest cold period we have is about 45 days and even then it’s not a deep freeze for too long. Once the ground heats up, it’s on!

I live in northern Arkansas and all the people here leave their elephant ears in the ground. Although it can get pretty cold here, sometimes below zero, it doesn't stay cold very long. I am going to mulch mine about 6 inches deep to overwinter and hope for the best.

Dude, what's up, I have a similar plant it's a little smaller, but it / she has produced many babies and seeds that I've planted, given a-way or put in flower pots all around my porch. It's awsome giving these away, my crops; that leaf is taller than half your height and your a beast, you said your 6'6", that 6' foot fence us no match for you. ,Your educational video is, much appreciated sir. Your information will be utilized, not to overwater my plants. My plants are all potted outside year round, they get Simi-dormant when it's under 60 degrees sometimes it drops to about 40 degrees over here, but the leaves keep sprouting up, no flowers until it gets warmer in spring. Why don't you make your own stepping stones using the leaves of this as the mould? Next year, if you planned ahead, you could use a variety of your large leaves to give you some variety of stepping stones to choose from without having to sacrifice a leaves during the high growing season. Make your stones a few days or the week ahead of the day you plan to move your plant(s) indoors. They would make such a statement or conversational piece in front of YOUR porch. There are lots of really good instructional videos on the internet that. You are so lucky to have such wealth to choose from. I have a neighbour in Downtown TO, who grows a few in a highly shaded spot near my local dog park and as much as I covet his leaves, (his plants, even, though I could never over winter them), I've never approached to ask for one as I know how much work goes into keeping these plants in our area, especially for him as he only has deeply shaded gardens available on his property and I know I wouldn't like to part with even one of the leaves were I in his situation.

Your plant is amazing. A friend living at my apartments had one on her patio I’d say small to medium. She gave me one in a small pot with two leaves . Kinda like the babies in the pot you have after cutting yours. It was doing well and started getting a third leaf and the second leaf died . It has been repeatedly doing this for three years now .Every time a new leaf comes out one dies .Have you ever heard of this? I even re potted it so it could have more room to grow. And nothings changed. Any idea why?

Thanks for the video. Do you spray the plant before bringing it in the house…to get rid of bugs they might get on other houseplants? I have read that bringing elephant ears indoors will bring the in mites with it.
@PlantzNThings
@PlantzNThings Жыл бұрын
i try to spray everything down with an insecticidal soap when they come in... but to be honest elephant ears are spider mite magnets.. you'll likely need to clean the leaves regularly when they're in the house to keep the pest population in check.

I am loving all your videos on bananas and giant plants. I've taken the blunge and just bought a small (1 ft tall) Alocasia 'Calidora' in a small 4" pot. It only has 2 leaves so I'm wondering if I should I cut it back to let it rejuvenate over winter or can I try to grow it indoors so that it's bigger when it goes in the ground in the spring? I'm in zone 5a (ahhh!).

When the time comes to cut my leaves off, I am going to take a couple of the largest and make concrete bird baths out of them. I made a couple years ago and I am going to try my hand at it again. All it takes is sand to form them on and a couple bags of dry concrete mix. I oiled the leaves before the concrete and used glad wrap so the leaf didn't stick to the concrete. I am not too good at creative painting so I will look for someone to help me.

Im not sure why you would add water if the plant is going dormant and going inside like a basement or crawlspace. Why so much water? I've read you can winterize in pearlite and vermiculite combination then place in cold climate like a cool/cold basement For people storing in a crawlspace, make sure you protect it from mice chewing for moisture, so use a very small wire net or build a frame around it.

PlantzNThings i May try to do that but in the off chance we get a worse winter this year I’ll move them inside just to be safe. I do have many bags of mulch in the garage. Thank you for the reply!

Hi Bill! How are you? Awesome plants. Shame to see those huge leaves cut. Do you recommend using systemic insect killer to water with before bringing outside plants inside? I havd a gorgeous Mandevelia and I am afraid of Fungus Gnats hitch hiking in too. Please let me know what you think. Thanks! Gerry

hey there :) systemic is a slippery slope... if I was able to use it for plants I'm bringing in ... I would for sure... but I would try not using it on anything that is staying outside... the issue with systemic is in not only kills the bad bugs... it can harm the beneficial ones too... like bees... use caution... but it will help you when the plants come inside

Thanks for your reply. I value your opinion, since your plants are gorgeous. A neighbor brought one of her big plants back inside and had an infestation of Fungus Gnats. Enjoy the rest of your summer. Gerry 😎

Can you leave them in a dark basement over winter?

with many Colocasia they are easily stored dormant in a dark place. but with these thailand giants I have not had them successfully come back after being dormant. the corm/bulb rots before they can really start growing. The Thai giant i try to keep at least 1 leaf on the plant over winter.

Hey I pulled a pup off of my plant last summer. Its already giant. I was trying to think of the best place to plant it the ones I currently have are in the south west corner of a eastern facing house. The front of the house has drainage issues and the only thing I can get to grow there consistently are tulips. What are your thoughts as to best location direction wise?

Gator Fan not too sure... the best place is a well lit spot that is protected from wind. make sure to use lots of organic material when digging the hole... and you might need to water these daily... when actively growing they are water pigs.
