Just found your channel. I’ve known about Colocasia for a long time but had not found a source here in Central Pa. This year I saw them at Lowe’s and picked up two tubers/bulbs of the Gigantea. I planted them adding a generous amount of Epsom Salts(magnesium) and worm castings. I planted at the end of May and by August they were five feet tall. They are absolutely gorgeous and looking forward to next year.

Great presentation. I have a couple elephant ears and they die back in winter (Dallas) but return in June. My fence border is aralia but damaged by the freeze. The little troopers are are coming back but because they were 6 feet tall and the new growth is now about 2 feet from the ground I have some big open spaces. Going to plant about 10 elephant ears to fill the spaces this summer. Next year I will let them fight it out. Big back yard I try to keep looking tropical. 4 of my 8 fan palms are showing life, the other 4, still waiting.

I bought the that you got from your sister....Love the purple under the leafs also when the leaves are young they have a velvety shine to them that is absolutely stunning. I bought it at a local nursery ( I'm in Toronto ) at 1.5 feet tall back in June of this past summer since then I had to transfer it into a larger pot and is now 5 feet tall and flourishing inside the house (was outside in the pot) It also flowered 2 flowers and believe its developed seeds. Also there are several babies that will need to be removed and replanted...Im absalutely fascinated with this tropical plant 🪴 . I really enjoyed your video and subscribed to your chanel so I can learn more about this variety of this plant ...Cheerz Great job.

Excellent. Just what I needed to know about growing outdoor. ❤🎉🎉🎉. I thought I'd lost an alocasia Stingray indoors. It looked dead, so I placed the pot in the garden hidden by ferns. The following spring, while tending to the fern area, I discovered the hidden pot. It had a tiny leaf and sure enough, it was a stingray. I brought the tiny thing indoors and to my surprise another plant surfaces beside it. It's doing really well even though it is now really bushy the leaves are yet to grow larger than my hand. None the less, it's so healthy and , fingers crossed None have died. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉❤

I live in Ukiah California which is zone 14 so we do freeze. I've notice if I cut all the leaf stocks short except the last to sprout. I then cut the leaf and leave the stock. The next sprout will stay protected from freeze and spout earlier then ones cut at the base. By the way nice video and great yard.

I bought what were supposed to be the “regular” EEs and they all grew as big as what you’re thinking is gigantea. I don’t know if they just like my dirt, but they grew to 4-5 feet tall and huge leaves. My Filipino neighbor got very excited because she recognized them as Taro, which she didn’t know would grow here (I’m in Katy). My taro got as big as my Jack’s giants; to only way you could tell the difference was the Jack’s had much bigger corms. If I had pictures I would send you a few, but I never took them. I’m afraid I’m starting over from scratch this year, because I had asked my handyman to weed the bed- showed him what was not a weed and what was- and for some reason he decided my EEs were all dead and he pulled them up. I was furious because I had showed him exactly what to pull out. He even cut my Jack’s Giant corms in half because he couldn’t get them out easily. I was sad for a week, then started looking at EEs online and planning to start over. You have some beautiful plants. Have you been successful at getting mojito to grow? I’ve tried twice and they were just too tender. I was sad.

Oh my, how awful about the handyman!!! Were you able to salvage any of them?! I still don’t truly know what mine are but they’re great! So, I have the Illustris variety, not mojitos, and they’ve proven to be very hardy & they multiply quickly!

I found this video so helpful. I recently got a Colocasia teacup or coffee cup as some call it. It was labeled as an allocation so I thought it was maybe a dark star or a black stem which I've heard do well indoors but I don't know much about the teacups I've heard their perennials and I'm afraid it's not going to be a good house plant 😕

You can definitely grow it indoors! It does love humidity though, so put a layer of rock/pebbles on the saucer under the pot to help with that. Then mist it often too. Indirect light is best and it should do well! It would love the bathroom if you have good light there!

However, I just found out that they can be very poisionous to pets, kids and people--causing many problems for many people writing in to the Gardening channel.. Gosh, I am so bummed out- was really looking forward to growing them, but with my dogs, I am not sure that it would be worth potential issues, if they were to find a leaf on the ground and chew it.. You are so chill! We're beginning our elephant ear planting journy here in Okinawa, Japan. There are tons of these in the jungle around our land I was planning on digging some up however my friend said they may be poisonous. Are you familiar with the poisonous variety?
@planttodaywithamyrae
@planttodaywithamyrae 4 ай бұрын
How exciting! All elephant ears can cause GI irritation to humans & animals if eaten. They can also cause a rash & burning if the liquid gets on your skin during pruning. Many people eat the Taro root (and the leaves) but all of it needs to be cooked properly so it’s not poisonous. So in most situations, it’s not considered poisonous to grow it for aesthetic purposes (just take care when pruning).

Are they brown spots all over on each leaf? If so, that’s most likely rust & you should spray a Copper Fungicide to get rid of it. If it’s just browning/yellowing of some leaves just chop those off & it’ll regrow new ones.

I have new elephant ears and it has sent out a long shoot about a metre long 3 and a half feet long that lays across the ground and it is in a pot on gravel. Is it a new shoot? Should l put it next to soil so it can grow. It also has a flower spike, which l didn't realise it can do?

Yes, many types send out runners which become new plants. It’s up to you if you want it to colonize somewhere then putting it in the ground would be the way to go. If it’s sending runners out of the pot, does it appear to have outgrown its pot? And yes, mine flower often :)

Hello. I have a colocasia in a pot and I noticed it’s roots coming out the bottom.. I really want to put in the ground but I’m too scared to.. will it survive In the ground? It gets part sun and I’m in Belton Texas. Thank you

Yes absolutely, it will love it but definitely put it in a spot you’re okay with it spreading or you could share the babies :)

Hey Amy I have 1 large Colocasia growing in my small yard and it flowered! (4 flowers so far) The flowers are still new ish but I was wondering if any of yours ever flowered and if you`ve gotten seeds from them. ?
@planttodaywithamyrae
@planttodaywithamyrae 3 жыл бұрын
Wow 4 is a lot! Yes mine also flower but I’ve never “assisted” them to pollinate & so no I haven’t gotten seeds. From what I read, they don’t pollinate very often and they need a little bit of assistance.

I have been trying to get the proper name of of the regular colacasia , you said it was a esculente ? Are you positive? I’m seeing on the internet the Elephant ear ears with wavy sides is that name. Someone please help
@planttodaywithamyrae
@planttodaywithamyrae Жыл бұрын
So the ones I call “regular” that are more pointy downward shaped are technically xanthosoma sagittifolim, i only later learned that and I edited my description to note it. They are different in that the base of the leaf separates where the stem comes out, whereas colocasia has more leaf behind where the stem comes out and it’s not separated. It’s hard to explain without a picture but I hope this helps.

@@creolelady182 honestly, I’ve just gotten lucky finding them at local nurseries or even big box stores. Home Depot recently had black ones in gallon pots!

Beautiful garden! I've subscribed. Where I live nurseries don't offer colocasia, however I can find Taro roots in the grocery markets occasionally. Will Taro root (planted correctly) give me these big beautiful leaves?? Thanks!

@@planttodaywithamyrae Oh, terrific! I'm going to give it a try then. I live in Jerusalem Israel and went to 5,6 nurseries, and none of them carry them. We're 9b so they should be a good here. My guess is that since we've usually had water shortages here people didn't plant them because they like to drink! In the past 5-10 years we've pretty much solved our water problems by desalinization, so it'll be interesting if gardening habits will change. Love everything in your garden, are those stromanthe? I only know the indoor type, those are magnificent!

@@planttodaywithamyrae yeah, you're right. I looked it up, variegated shell ginger, they're absolutely Jurassic, never heard of them before but I love them now. Unfortunately I googled them and they don't appear to be available here either, *sigh*. Yes, you must visit Israel, bring plants! lol. happy gardening, looking forward to poking around your channel some more and seeing what your growing!

I want to try the black diamond and white lava, but don't want to waste time and money. I'm originally from Beaumont, TX, near you but now in Dallas...we get a lot of dry summer heat versus the humidity I was so used to back home. would you try those two? My growing area is all full sun🥵
@planttodaywithamyrae
@planttodaywithamyrae Жыл бұрын
The Diamondheads can definitely take the sun but the white lava would prefer some shade in the hot afternoons. As long as you can water them well, I don’t see that being a problem!

@@planttodaywithamyrae thanks. I'll stick with the diamond heads since my area is full sun and forego the white lava. My wife works from home and can water frequently or set the irrigation to do so.
