For some unknown reason the photographs of the rescue attempt of Omayra kept triggering the KZbin 18+ rating, meaning that the video would not appear in search or browse, and that basically nobody would see it. I tried many times to re-edit the video but could never figure out what exactly the KZbin AI found offensive. In the end I had to block out most of the photographs to get around this problem.

There was also an older girl who was also trapped, (she was looking after the house after her parents had to go to the capital for a family emergency) and she was actually laughing and joking with her rescuers. They got her out too, and she insisted on walking to the helicopter on blistered legs and feet, grimly joking all the time. She had a massive heart attack in the Helicopter and died.

My Ex partner's sister was a 4th or 5th year medical student doing volunteer work at the clinic in Armero at the time. On that day, luckily for her, she had left around 4pm to drive to Ibague about an hours drive away. She was supposed to go back the next day. It may not sound ad bad as some deaths, but death by infection is an absolutely terrible way to die. I got a nasty cut on the back of my left leg from some razor wire atop a fence located on the horse ranch where I was living at the time. It ended up becoming badly infected because I was an undiagnosed diabetic at the time and my blood was full of sugar for the infection to feed on. I was in the hospital with a nasty fever and blood and puss pouring out of the wound on my leg. It took a full week of round the clock antibiotics just to bring the infection under control, let alone killing it. Worst week of my life

Excellent treatment of this tragedy. i have a comment on Lahars. The heat of the eruption melts so much ice so fast that the water is never ice water. It's boiling water that's highly acidic as well. It wouldn't be boiling by the time it reached the town, but it would still be hot. In the video of the lahar in Japan you can see steam raising from the flow. i am not trying to make this any worse than it was. Objectively speaking, i believe boiling acid water is far worse than ice water. Thank you for your diligence in documenting these stories !:-) 💜🙏⚡️ 💜🙏⚡️

I live 76 miles from Mt Rainer in Washington State, and the ancient lahar routes go from the summit to Puget Sound - some 90 miles away. There are many developments and towns existing in the shadow of the mountain. Many of the towns near the slopes have now grown so large that officials admit that a hurried evacuation would be difficult, if not impossible. The lessons of nearby Mt. Saint Helens were not applied.

@@saragrant9749 Censorship has gone so far to treat us all like children. It's not about morbid curiosity but the consequence of reality. Walk through the American War Museum in Ho Chi Minh City and you'll be brought to tears from the atrocity of senseless war. Facebook goes as far as demonetizing anyone using the most basic of words, like alcohol, abuse, drugs, etc. As much as neo-liberalism loves censorship, it's authoritarian and a war on the freedom of speech, no matter how stupid or fallacious that speech, it prevents open discourse.

@@meowzic open discourse is fine, but if you have this driving need to see graphic, disturbing images or videos you’re free to go look them up at sites that have proper age restrictions in place, to keep young children from viewing. The general public has no need of seeing things like this- much like having controls on the tv for parents. Because of people like you, who see no harm in having such subjects out there for all to see are the reason we NEED such regulations and restrictions. I can understand that things can be triggers for people, but censorship of painful truths is getting out of hand. The images of that poor little girl, in some cases smiling for the cameras and full of optimism while being unaware that her rescuers can do nothing, doesn't merit censorship. They aren't graphic. They aren't exploitive or lack respect as some would claim. The worst that can be said of them is that they are heartbreaking. The censorship of her photos and others speaks volumes about the people who demand, and grant censorship. They are unwilling or unable to accept that life can be downright monstrous to people who didn't deserve it. Censoring such photos doesn't magically make things go away. It happened. It sucks. Look, cry, think, and learn.

It made such a refreshing change to hear someone talk about a disaster in a suitable tone, no wierd voice alterations and better yet youve clearly done research for your video, rather than what far too many channels do and just giving what they assume a witness statement would sound like after mixing in some over dramatic unnessessary details 👍🏼

Lahars are literally concrete. They are what inspired the Romans to invent manmade concrete. The first recipe for concrete ever created called for lots and lots of volcanic ash.

As a side note, governments have told people that they were safe with tragic results. Armero is a tragic example as this video noted. As another commentator below noted, there is the instance of business and political interests dismissing the danger from Mount Pelee on Martinique back in 1902. A similar story is that of the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. In 1975 Mount Baker, also in Washington, began to show unusual signs that the USGS worried might be signs of an impending eruption. The state took the correct and responsible actions (lowering a reservoir and restricting access). The volcano never erupted and business interests and the public were angry at lost profits and being barred for their own safety. Then 1980 and Mount St. Helens happened. The USGS was more cautious and general about its predictions. The government was less decisive as it didn't want more angry businesses and people again. As the infamous bulge on the north slope of Mount St. Helens formed and grew outward, the USGS became more concerned and convinced the state to establish restricted access zones. Predictably landowners and businesses were angered. Logging companies didn't want to lose possible income and loggers weren't overly worried. Home owners in the red zone were upset that they were being kept away. The blue and red zones extended out roughly to the distance recommend by the USGS to the south and southeast. But the boundaries stopped at the property lines for logging companies to the north and west. The USGS tried to make the danger of a massive landslide clear and persuade government officials to push out the boundaries of the blue and red zones. The people in charge mostly dismissed the predictions, remembering the fallout from Mount Baker. As the bulge grew and the USGS became more strident, paperwork to extend the restricted zones further out was drawn up, but by the time it was ready for the governor's signature, it was sitting on the governor's desk over a weekend. By the time Monday rolled around Mount St. Helens had erupted. Tragic, yes, but what followed was obscene. People who died in the eruption were victim blamed with the lie being started by the governor. President Carter repeated the lie believing it to be fact. The friends and families of the victims were cruelly traumatized repeatedly. When it became known that all but three of the victims were outside the zones, (two of whom had official government permission) there was no apology or even an admission that the claims of victims sneaking into restricted areas were all wrong. In most cases victims were far enough outside the red zone that they couldn't see the volcano. What is the cherry on this ugly sundae is that the governor went to great lengths to avoid apologizing, instead consistently shifting blame anywhere else she could come up with. She defended her slander and doubled down on her lies about the victims. To this day many people still believe the falsehood that victims were completely at fault. The only fault the victims had was that they trusted the people they elected were impartial and acted with their best interests in mind. See this video by Washington PBS for more on the ugly saga: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oofLY2V7fcihnrs

As is so often the case where economic gains outweigh the risks of loss of human lives, the final harvest is black with nothing but the crimson tinge of the blood of the dead and dying. It should make one wonder, that when basketful of crops is all that stands between a meal and hunger for billions of people, what would an objective, intelligent observer from another world think of humanity? I'm persuaded to think the that a cursory glance would illicit a thought that beggars belief. Humanity and civility are mutually exclusive. Thanks for another great but tragic tale.

Looks like the two biggest killer eruptions in the 20th century were relatively avoidable. Had the people of St Pierre not been threatened with being arrested for leaving the town because of a stupid election, and the inhabitants of Armero given warning that the volcano was going to unleash hell, most if not all of them could have survived. If the respective volcanoes had not gone off then yes, the officials would have looked a bit foolish, but at least the citizens would be ALIVE to look 'foolish', rather than dead and suffering through an unimaginable horror. Over 55,000 dead from both disasters.

They did a wrong call for time of evacuation... if only they make it earlier and more immediate... it wouldn't happened that way... unlike in Philippines where the volcanologists make a decision to alert the whole towns around and the authorities to evacuate on the spot... not to mention that while the Mt. Pinatubo is erupting, there is a terrible storm with heavy rains and strong winds rolling in... making a devastating lahar flow flooding and buried the surrounding towns and cities... but because they make a wise decision to put the people to safety and do it quickly... it only took 800+ lives in casualty... although it's quite a number... atleast it far from the worst case scenario...
