This is me: for years I had these thoughts too! Although never so eloquently expressed; people always seemed a bit caught off guard, even annoyed by my use of colons and semi-colons - as well as my use of other types of punctuation. It was such a struggle for me, that -after a while- I found it very difficult to have any sense of how to use them anymore; it felt as if I had unlearned a part of language; unlearned, repressed, a part of myself: a part of my personality; playful use of language and punctuation, but still intentful, while content with the grey messiness of translating speech and thought to writing.

All of my teachers growing up absolutely hated semicolons, because they found it hard to tell if someone had used it correctly. It’s easier to tell if someone understands the use of a colon because if what they right isn’t a fact after the colon then they are clearly misunderstanding it. Semicolons, like you said, link ideas together that can be related but aren’t a definitive. Because if this, I haven’t been allowed to use semicolons in my school work, and now find it hard to write with them.

This is it! Semicolons deserve so much more love for the fantastic function they possess! I have always gotten complaints from teachers in school that my sentences are too long and that I should use more full stops; in my defiance I just continued using multiple commas and semicolons. For me a sentance is the totality of a thought, not in the grand scale of a philosophical concept but rather a meaningful thought in context. I don't think we really think with full stops most of the time, I suggest that we think with commas, semicolons and abrubt endings and beginnings.

Tofran Bohk colons : is for a fact and semicolon ; is for a describing one thing that could contribute to a statement If you had a feeling for example (easiest way to use a semicolon) it would be: Jim was sad; it’s nearly fall. This suggests that the change in season isn’t the ONLY reason Jim is sad, but is one reason. It suggests that Jim might not know the other reasons for him being sad, but knows that one of them is because of Fall.

If you're unsure how to use a semicolon, remember this: both of the parts that a semicolon separates must be able to stand alone as sentences. Example: "One is for a winky face; one is for a normal face." A period (full-stop) would've worked too. There are plenty of good articles online about when & how to use semicolons.

Thanks a lot for this wonderful lesson! From now on, I definitely like the semi colon better! But I must say that we should be very grateful for having something like a colon too :- ) Because even if it is just for a second, it gives you the kind of security and certainty that you will never find in life. How interesting that in Greek, you use semi colon as a question mark. Does anybody know why? I have always wondered... By the way, what a great concidence: one of the latest episodes of Malcolm Gladwell's excellent podcast " Revisionist History" is entirely dedicated to semi colon! The episode is called: " Divide and Conquer, The complete unabridged history of the world's most controversial semi-colon" I don't want to give away the story, but what they are talking about is still an issue and it could change the U.S' history in some ways. So don't miss it! It seems that Shakespeare liked semi colons a lot too. Especially when he thought about death I guess... 1. As flies to wanton boys, are we to the gods; they kill us for their sport. ( King Lear ) 2. The sense of death is most in apprehension; and the poor beetle, that we tread upon, in corporal sufferance feels a pang as great as when a giant dies. ( Measure for Measure ) 3. Cowards die many times before their deaths; the valiant never taste of death but once. ( Julius Caesar ) 4. Men's evil manners live in brass; their virtues we write in water. ( Henry VIII ) 5. " Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears; I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him. The evil that men do lives after them; The good is oft interred with their bones". ( Julius Caesar ) ( Himmmm. I am not sure If I agree with this one; indeed the good remains too, right ? At least we must hope so. ) 6. Present mirth hath present laughter ; what's to come is still unsure. ( Twelft Night ) But this one by Jonn Donne is my favourite: "No man is an island , entire of it self; every man is a piece of the Continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the Sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a Promontory were, as well as if a Manor of thy friends, or of thine own were; Any Man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankind; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee"
@jodicompton55616 жыл бұрын
Hi Lua, I always like to see your comments on SoL videos. I"m by no means a Shakespeare scholar, but I think a certain amount of punctuation was added by later scholars. His original folios aren't known for using a lot of punctuation and stage direction; probably because he was right there with the actors in rehearsals, and a lot of that information was just conveyed through conversation. (ps that is a legit semicolon in the second sentence. I'm a semicolon addict from way back)
