I like to think that, because the cursor was there, Alan saw all this happening and just let it 'cause he thought it'd be funny. After filling the head, I can see him just hitting the undo button and then letting them play around with the colours like that. I'd also like to headcanon that the sticks have their colour ID's memorized so it wasn't hard for them to get back to normal.
