Jeven- really really great tutorial. You obviously know your stuff way way better than the average smo who is even giving tutorials on KZbin. You explained it better than anyone I’ve heard. Basically - get to 709; then you can color grade to anything you want, but that is the necessary baseline to make the footage the way it should be straight out of the camera. Thank you!

Hello, I saw that you added the Rec.709 profile directly to the clip in your timeline -- This made me think of the question below. Do you think it would be easier to add the Rec.709 profile to an adjustment layer instead and copy that adjustment layer across your footage and then add another adjustment layer over that one for your desired LUT (if you even need to add a LUT at that point)?
@jp_itze2 жыл бұрын
I thought about it as well. But then I came across a problem in FCPX when editing multiple clips from different cameras in the same shot. Your adjustment layer applies the settings to all clips below it. So if you have a clip from a different camera below it, your layer will affect them both. If you put it above it and add a LUT for this camera it's the same thing around. Maybe therefore you have to create compound clips... Correct me if I am wrong. :)

This is great info Jeven! I have stopped using the GH5 Log because it just doesn't look good. I have been shooting in a modified CineD which, I have been liking but, I am going to try the Panasonic download to go from Log to Rec709 and grade off of that. I will see how that works for me. I didn't know that was available on the Panasonic site. Thx!
@JevenDovey6 жыл бұрын
I try not to shoot in LOG unless I need the dynamic range. My favorite settings are using the Natural Profile and doing a grade from there. Let me know what you think about grading using the Panasonic LUT
@HarvyDangerFilms6 жыл бұрын
Jeven Dovey will do. I have been considering using natural more again. I used it all of the time when I first got he GH5. What are your settings for the natural profile? I have mine at -5 -5 -5 -5 0. Also, do you adjust your master pedestal level? I have been playing around with it a bit. I have had it to -10. Felt that was too much. Went to -5 But, am thinking of backing off more to -3. Maybe I should just keep it at 0. ?

@cinematicjohn4 жыл бұрын
I guess, any high contrast scene where you need to fine tune dark and bright areas which is not possible during shooting, log comes handy. In a controlled studio environment, if I have faders to each and every light source and if I could adjust the lighting ratios to my liking, I won't require to shoot log, resort to ETTR and tweak exposure, and saturation in the post. We shall have to consider which method is less expensive and time saving. Please correct me if I am wrong!

I love the color grading in your portrait shots, and I like the content, but some suggestions: 1. I wouldn't apply a 709-like LUT, as those kind of profiles is what robs the picture its much desired cinematic look (among many many other things) as they make highlights too punchy instead of compressed... In fact, I wouldn't apply any LUT at all. I don't. 2. I wouldn't shoot myself so close to the camera. That close your face gets always distorted regardless of the sensor-lens. Also, some persons could find it uncomfortable or intimidating. Excuse me for being so annoying. ;)

Don't use the Panasonic Rec 709 Lut as its designed for the varicams V LOG and not the V LOG L. That's part of the reason it sucks for colours particularly making everything look magenta and red.

Color checkboards are for studio camera testing and comparison only. You have to control light temperature and direction or You will end up with nasty results. Been there done that. I had even a crazy DoP who used "Passport board" all through shooting. He end up very disappointed at grading stage.

Wow. Lots of BAD information here. Rec.709 isn't a look or a "base" to start your grade. It's a standardized color space for HDTV. By applying the manufacturer's Rec.709 LUT to your log footage, you are conforming the log footage to this HDTV gamma and color set. No real colorist would ever first apply a Rec.709 LUT to their log footage, then start grading. They'd just start with the log footage, correct it , then start their grade. You need to take a break from creating "educational" videos and learn about the topics you are discussing. Wrong info seems to pop up a lot in just the few videos of yours that I have watched.

Hey Jeven, I was wondering why you followed me on Twitter and then unfollowed me. Since I never heard of you I'm assuming that you initiated the exchange. I'm relatively new to Twitter and I'm trying to figure out why this occurs frequently. It’s seems with people like you who have lots of followers (≈︎125K) and very few that you follow (≈︎35). Is it a status thing? Do you look for people with channels to follow, then when they follow you, unfollow them so you look more important? I'm pretty sure it’s a business decision of some kind, So, I'd really like to know...please don't think I'm just acting trolly. I'm really puzzled about why so many people do that? Does it make them look weak if they follow the people that follow them? I realize I'm grasping at straws for logical explanations here. But has been bugging me for a while and as luck would have it you came up in Tweepsma as having followed me...then a few days later unfollowing me. I was lucky in this instance because there's a vehicle which I can actually use to ask you why. Seriously though...no probs with the unfollow...frankly, I could care less. The only reason I even pay attention to those numbers is because my WordPress website includes Twitter followers as website followers...that's a number I do pay attention too. Frankly you're not my demographic for my website followers. And since this happens frequently...it seems to me to be with a certain class of twitterers who like that very skewed follower ratio. I'm hoping you'll get that I'm not trying to be catty, but that I really want to learn and understand the answer. Feel free to delete this comment since it’s not very flattering to you. But if you could let me know somehow I'd REALLY appreciate it! Awesome video btw. If my channel's videos were more professional I'd probably subscribe. But it’s primarily for support media that I use to illustrate complex subject matter that I write about. Therefore, it’s not the kind of channel that people would typically subscribe to.
@Warumduscher6 жыл бұрын
I doubt that you'll get a honest answer here by the Jeven. So I take over: This "follow-to-get-a-refollow" technique is a common way to increase somebody's social media audience. It's one of the more darker, unfriendlier ways of growth hacking. He follows you and you think he's is interested in your feed. Bun then you see his strange follower ratio and realize that he only used a social media bot to follow und automatically unfollow thousands of accounts in a batch. Unfortunately it's like the PopUps on a webpage. They are really annoying, but they do the job. You annoy thousands of people but gain as many new followers. More than with conventional ways to promote your account. Why do these accounts follow so few other people? Because a higher follower/following ratio makes the filterin algorithm on the platforms tend to rate you as followworthy and they suggest your feed to more people. If you have a gazillion followers like Justin Bieber you have can follow thousand of people and still have a very uneven ratio. But if you have fewer followers you can optimize your ratio by keeping the number of people low that you actively follow. But don't think that they don't follow other people at all. They just use other accounts than their main accounts for that. Unfortunately it's a thing you tend to have to do if you want to rely on social media platforms as KZbin or Instagram as your main income. The main currency is "audience" and if you want to be considered as an A-Blogger/Vlogger in order get the premium promotion deals, you have to do the same what your competitors in the online business are doing - even if you dislike the methods for being deceitful and manipulative at the bottomline. The only upside in this case is that Jeven is one of the better content creators in the business. So refollowing him is a better thing than subscribing to other channels with crappy clickbait content or advertisement for an evil Bitcoin pyramid selling scheme.
