In this tutorial I show you how I edit a new music video I did for Anna Cyzon, titled "Never Broken" using DaVinci Resolve 12. I use Adobe Premiere CC 2015 for editing and then I export my edit to Resolve. You can do this even if you are using other editing programs.
You can watch the finished music video here: • Video
Watch the making of this music video here: • Making a Music Video "...
You can download DaVinci Resolve 12 here: www.blackmagic...

Hey Tom! Thank you so much for this. Recently, I was able to have my old 8mm family films transfered to digital files. Using Davinci Resolve and your great tutorial on grading, I managed to color correct those films from the sixties. The result is AMAZING! Your tutorial made it so easy. I can't believe I was initially going to go straight from editing to rendering! Thanks a million!!! Serge

VERY nice!! With this easy to follow tutorial I was able to quickly get color and exposure correction completed for an interview video that I had overexposed a bit. Now it looks great. Thank you. I look forward to an easier learning curve now that I've been "introduced" properly to this lady.

Very comprehensive! Subscribed. Actually decided to use Resolve now for editing after I went round & round with Adobe tech support over audio tracks not importing into the timeline. Their solution was for me to go in and delete some folders. And I told them, a technical issue like this that has been complained about for over a year from several users was not a problem to be foisted upon the users. I told them to fix the issue before my subscription runs out next year, or I would not be their customer. As, such, I've decided to become a master of Resolve. It's a lot different. But, so far I like it a lot. There is a bit of a learning curve. But once you see how they lay everything out, it starts to make sense. And it most importantly has yet to fail to add audio with the video track in the timeline editor.

Just a quick tip for everyone looking into color correction or grading. Alex Van Hurkmans "Handbook of Color Correction" is like the holy grail for learning it. Currently working my way through it, wow, just so much knowledge compressed into 600 pages. As he wrote the manual to Resolve, he often refers to Resolve itself, so that makes it easier to adapt. Though Speedgrade and Baselight etc seem to be very very equal.

One thing that made color correction make more sense is realizing that color correction for video is pretty much the exact same thing as using an equalizer to adjust sound... you can boost the bass, but not the treble... just like here you can boost the blacks without boosting the whites. More people are familiar with a sound equalizer which i think makes for an easier to understand analogy.

You definitely got me interested in Davinci Resolve. Especially with how you tracked shots. I need to look into how it differs from Nuke and After Effects. Tom Antos , this is a great video, probably the best video explaining how to color grade in DAVINCI RESOLVE that i have seen so far. I do wonder though, is it possible to export your clip from premiere when edit it with transitions, so for example you if you use time ramp and dissolve to black etc is is possible to export all this data to davinci?

I watched all of the adorama videos and this, and I must say this is so helpful, I can't believe how well everything comes together. One quick question, I've been using Premiere Elements but I just built a more powerful PC so I can use more advance software. Would you say Premiere Pro is worth the price or should I just use Resolve for my editing or something like hitfilm or even just continue using Elements? Curious to your response, thanks
@TomAntos
@TomAntos 8 жыл бұрын
+mestuptim Depends what type of videos you plan on editing. The free editing programs like Davinci Resolve are great and will work 99% of the time. For that extra freedom and speed of working you might want to consider spending the money on Premiere Pro but it's not necessary. Really your call.

Nice work Tom, I am learning this at the moment. I notice you shot on the A7s but your files are DNxHD - did you convert them before the edit and if so was this because of the processing demands required to edit XAVC-S straight off the A7s?

Nice Tom! The techniques should apply to most color correction scenarios, Resolve or no. Speaking of which, do you ever bother with Speedgrade? I have a CC subscription, so I have access to it, but so far I haven't found a compelling reason to use it (or Prelude for that matter).

great one Tom! thanks. If I'm working on a documentary and I have to have overlays/cutaways for the interviews. Do you still suggest I put all that on one track, do the grade and then re import to final cut and re do my overlays? i.e a messy timeline. One more thing, I am thinking of moving over to Adobe's video editing system, does it work just as well on a Mac computer?

Tom great tutorial. If you are using the Cinema Camera Raw, can you edit in Premier Pro first and export to Resolve for grading in Raw via the XML route or do you have to open in Resolve first and then round trip via XML proxies? It would be so much easier to edit raw footage first so just wondering if that flow is possible. Thanks
@TomAntos

it is possible but you will need a very powerful computer that can play back raw footage in real time. Most can't. Specially laptops.

Thanks, Tom! The question I have is - what if you have certain edits on the clips in the Premiere timeline (say RedGiant's denoiser, etc.) Will the rendered clip export in daVinci or just the source un-touched footage? Should we do a render timeline in Premiere before saving as an XML? Thanks!
