I read that the SpectreVision production company has dropped Richard Stanley because of these allegations, which is not surprising. I think this likely kills any future plans for a new "Dunwich Horror" film, let alone a third movie. After the failed plans of del Toro's "At the Mountains of Madness", this is yet another blow to the hopes of fans for high-quality Lovecraftian films in the foreseeable future.

another fun fact about Robert E Howard. he helped a lot with Lovecraft's Xenophobia, in letter correspondences he described cultures he was researching. that was the difference between Howard and Lovecraft, Lovecraft was afraid of the unknown, Howard embraced it and celebrated it.

I had always assumed the "blasted heath" would be dark, and black, like charcoal or burnt wood. Seeing being depicted in white was VERY clever, I think. Depending on weather you're using additive or subtractive colours, 'white' is either the presence of ALL, or complete ABSENCE of colour. There's certainly something to be said about the visuals of going from an "imaginary" colour to either a complete saturation / lack of colour, even beyond the atomic imagery.

Well… I always envisioned it as grey, like volcanic ash, as that was how Lovecraft described all of the “affected“ life forms. They would turn grey and lose their integrity. As a matter of fact it did always remind me of the damage done at the genetic level by high levels of ionising radiation. I.e., your skin would just stop being skin and start falling off, because the cells could no longer maintain the integrity of their membranes. I imagined this phenomenon happening simultaneously all throughout every biological system of all life in the region, resulting in a roughly circular region - with the well as it centre - consisting of entirely discorporate matter, sucked dry of all organic or life-giving compounds, leaving nought but alkali salts. I guess another way to put it would be to say that it looked like a piece of the surface of the moon had been transplanted into the middle of a lush and fertile region of upper New England, as there is no organic material in lunar soil.

Interestingly the symbol on Lavinia's forehead at the end of the movie is the rune 'Othel' and runes are used a lot by wiccans and pagans alike as a magical alphabet. In its upright position Othel 'indicates one who is consumed by an ideal or vision' or someone 'inspired by the past' (quoted from The Runes by Lisa Pechel). Which is cool as she is literally giving Ward a vision, and experiencing one herself. It also represents possessions and things money can buy 'usually land or a building' which connects to the fact that it's the land being effected, and the house that is then taken. And also, could literally be a reference to her being 'possessed' by the colour. With regards to her use of the Necromicon as a non-fiction book of magical spells/symbols, I have come across one or two people in the pagan community who do believe in its lore, treating it as similar to the Key of Solomon. Sounds silly, but yeah, it happens.
@Legather2 жыл бұрын
Wrote this elsewhere but I'll add it here too, her carving 'solve' on her right hand is possibly a reference to Eliphas Levi's Baphomet which has 'solve' on its right arm and 'coagula' on it's left which are terms apparently used in alchemy for taking apart and conjoining which we obviously see in the film. I guess it hints not only at her desperation to try anything for aid but also the influence the colour has. Also regarding the Necronomicon, obviously for us the Simon Necronomicon is a real thing but in universe after so many years perhaps there are bastardised mass market reprints of bits of the 'real' Necronomicon. While people can't take it out of the libraries that hold copies those libraries do let people in to read them, perhaps someone with malicious intent or just enterprising might decide to print stuff they recall and pad it out with other assorted occult knowledge

I don't know if anyone mentioned this, but the quote on the wall of Benny's room "No Flesh Shall Be Spared" is likely a reference to a movie called Hardware that Stanley directed in 1990, and was also the title of a 2009 documentary, where Stanley is credited as himself. The Simon Necronomicon is an all Sumerian based book with serious padding of a dramatic Lovecraftian sort. (I slightly knew the typist through mutual friends. She poured salt over her typewriter as she worked.) Oddly there are no banishings, only calling spells in the book. Lavinia should have invested in a better grimoire.

Lavinia is such a weird name, it sticks out like a sore thumb. Especially since the rest of the family has normal modern sounding names. And being a Lovecraft fan, Lavinia sticks out even more because it's a singular name even in his mythology. What would have been interesting is if she had survived the movie but the color leaving had made her an albino. Or at least bleached her skin similar to how it bleaches the earth. And had driven her mad. Then she could become Lavinia Whately in the next movie. GImmicky, yes. But a way to tie the trilogy together by having one character lead to the next movie.
@tuskinekinase4 жыл бұрын
Since the Color messes with time and space, she could have indeed been transported into the Whateley household many years before to become "the twisted albino". And given how you mentioned her albinism could be seen as similar to the blasted earth, it wouldn't be out of place at all!
@CommadoreGothnogDragonheart4 жыл бұрын

This was always my favorite Lovecraft story because it was always a great way to show a truly alien lifeform and it was so amazing for its mutations and the mental degradation making it seem like it is something that even if you survive will change you forever. (which actually seems like its a perfect reason for the people going mad in modern day instead of the Lovecraft troupe of going nuts after only a few traumas or weird things.) It rode on my shoulder for over an hour as we walked along. I say hot pink, but it was much like the color filters this movie presents. Going back to my childhood crayon sets, magenta was darker. 15:54 - 16:08 Maybe Cage asked Stanley to throw in the reference as a bit of closure for Superman Lives not being made. 🤣🤣🤣Just kidding.

I seem to recall The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath implying that the Elder sign is a hand gesture. I like to think of the it like the term Old One, a handy, vague catch all word that Lovecraft and his circle can drop in any strange gestures or insignias they wanted to include in a story.

I think we've all had that exact copy of that book at least once in our lives... Just sayin'. I had the same one I bought at a Hastings when I was a weeee lad. Also, that praying mantis edit in my face scared the shit out of me with my cig and morning coffee lol. Great review as always man.

Yeah pretty much. I bought that book from...I think it was a Borders in the local mall. Printed with hellish INK, and bound in unholy...tagboard.

@@BuildEnvironmentTV lol same here... Same here. Something tempted me to go down that aisle. It was scary.

I really like your idea of each person's presentation being what they bring to the color, rather than what the color brings to them. I had the same thought while watching, as Cage's character becomes his father around the presence, the mother pushes more to prove she is useful/productive which was also set up, the stoner son finds himself mostly impacted by losing time, the goth/wiccan daughter with tattooed marks on her skin becomes the stereotype common people assume wiccans/goths are by cutting herself up with those same marks, and the young child that always wants his mommy becomes literally fused to his mommy. Everyone becomes an almost parody level extreme version of the traits set up at the start.

Surprised there was no mention of the original attempt at adapting the color out of space into a film with the movie called the curse (1987). Would've loved to hear you're opinion on that take of the story.

At 49:51 if you look at the tree that is behind the Color smoke column, it heavily resembles the Elder sign. The fact all other trees in the scene have a fair amount of leaves except that one makes me think it's an intention addition.

I’m willing to and frequently get a bit out there with theorising but, thats quite a stretch, genuinely cant see anything
@ArtbyDanielP4 жыл бұрын
@@deusdeaconReviews It might be me putting my own mental spin on it and thinking too much on it. Mainly it's the way the main part of the tree goes up, then all the branches are also curved upwards on either. I know that is a general tree thing to do, but it's location behind the Color, how the branches are highlighted by the daytime sky, and quick glance made me think it could be an almost subliminal thing for viewers. Should also mention, a great review and break down.

If you haven’t yet, you should give Annihilation (2018) a look. I saw it just after watching Colour Out of Space.

She may be Wiccan but that spell she's doing at the start is ceremonial magick of the Golden Dawn tradition which had roots in Rosecrucianism and Freemasonry. It is the Western Hermetic tradition.
@deusdeaconReviews4 жыл бұрын
Well she also uses a paperback necronomicon i dont think anyone is surprised her “magic” is all over the place.

Kind of a weird thought I had but I wonder if some of these entities that we can't comprehend also can't really comprehend us.
