Thank you so much for creating your color theory video series. I am going into Graphic Design and I have been searching far and wide for a good color theory video. Most videos jump right into designing rather than really explaining colors. I am the type that likes to understand the foundation and tools I am working with i.e colors. This has been so helpful. I can't thank you enough.

Zoe thanks for talking about the DIFFERENT color wheels, i didn't know why some people were using blue-red-yellow for mixing because it did feel like some colors were left out, but i didn't know if i should use the cyan-magenta-yellow for the complementaries because it felt weird

Best CMYK video on the market IMO... and I've watched a lot of em!! I especially love that you use so many ceruleans and a pthalo that is a true cyan instead of a blue. I see a lot of 'true blue' pthalo in CMYK tutorials and it is NOT cyan! ***TLDR: I think RBY and CMYK are good for different uses. Try both, see how you go.When the basic colour profile of your subject matter changes, consider switching from RBY to CMYK or vice versa.**** So many of the other videos use blue instead of cyan, or a yellow that is way too warm, or a 'magenta' that is way too muted / warm and they end up with a colour wheel that is so similar to a standard RBY wheel that it just confirms the traditional bias toward RBY again. I find them so frustrating to watch. I'm painting a lot of florals at the moment and during that journey I discovered CMYK. It was so so huge for me and is a complete game changer for florals because it provides you with so many more fresh, light, bright and clear colours which are just impossible to achieve using RBY - especially greens and violet / purples. That said, I still value the RBY technique for other subjects. I think if you want to know whether to use CMYK or RBY, think about what colours your subject has. Are they muted or clear? Bright or dark? With RBY you will get rich, dark, muted colours. With CMYK you will get clear, bright colours. CMYK will make your life very difficult if you want dark, rich colours. It will wash out to grey too quickly. RBY will be extremely frustrating if you want a wide range of purples and greens.

Thank you for this! I've been reading up on whether or not to use CMYK or RYB for watercolor painting. All of my art teachers and most authors on the subject have advised RYB, not because they don't believe CMYK theory isn't true, but that the physical properties of CMY pigments are less reliant than RYB. But paints have constantly gotten better. Plus, if the science behind paint manufacturing has advanced well enough for printers to use CMYK, then watercolors might as well be trustworthy. All I needed at this point was physical proof that CMYK watercolor paints work (considerably well), and your work has proven that they can be trusted. My only concern is that it appears that the Cyan you used did have some slight discoloration (might be from blending of colors though or drying of paint). Anyway, thanks again for the video!

I honestly think it stems from the way that the American education system and culture views art. We view artistic ability as something that you are either born with or not. The fact that art is a skill that can be learned seems to be something only artist know. My art education was minimal and over by middle school. In high school you had to take a test showing you had a certain amount of artistic ability to get into the art program. This was at a public high school mind you. I always loved art, but I didn't even try to get in. I didn't think I was gifted enough. After high school I gave up art all together for 10 years, because I thought it was a waste of my time when I'd never improve. It is only thanks to people like you on youtube that I have rediscovered my love for art, and I've actually have seen a great amount of improvement in my art in just a few months time. As silly as it may seem moments like this, something as simple as seeing red being made when I though it wasn't possible, are the moments that encourage me the most. These are the moments that I realize how little I really know. And as long as I have more to learn I can still grow as an artist. So thank you.

Yeah this took me down a rabbit whole of color theory reading especially when I learned magenta has no actual frequency it IS red and blue which are on opposite sides of the frequency spectrum. Magenta as a color exists only in our mind. Here what is happening is that yellow paint absorbs blue light but still reflects a great deal of red light as red and yellow light are similar frequencies. In magenta paint about half of blue light is absorbed half reflected same with red light, in yellow paint most blue light is absorbed most red light is reflected. This leaves a very small amount of blue light being reflected but a lot of red light so we see it as red.

If I dont use my big studio palette, I have to make sure that I have 4 spare small pans for my go to palette. I dont need more than 4. 3 of them are the colors of CMY color wheel, in my case Pthalo Blue PB15:3, Quinacradone Rose and Lemon Yellow. In practical use, however, I need to use a 4th color in order to achieve more natural, earth-tony colors and mix black easily. Which is why I put Burnt Sienna or Burnt Umber on my palette. ;) I never found why people think that using at least 10 colors for a travel palette is essential after figuring out the CYM one.

@richiejourney1840

That’s funny. Thats not a CYM pallet either. Your using a BVg/Yg/Rv palette. That’s a green leaning Blue Violet, a green leaning Yellow, and a violet leaning Red. In essence your still using a BYR system. Your “bias” just leans the opposite way of traditional paints used to explain theory. But don’t fret…Science does not use correct colors for RGB either and neither did traditional RYB so…have at it at call it whatever you like as do most. As for me…I like to carry a larger palette with well chosen representations in each hue-not only because CYM does not cut it all the time but neither does traditional RYB. I have found that you need many “primaries” to cover the largest gamut and pigment properties effects. The actual palette for this is still small and carried easily in my pocket.

A video just on different yellows would be neat. Honestly I kind on hate yellow since it's well just yellow. It's alot harder to have a subtlety off yellow so instead of there being . Bunch of kinds of yellow it just sort of seems like there aren't any options other than a pastel, or a fully saturated yellow.

Dear Zoe, very eye-opening video! I’m new to color theory and have been reading the Designing with Color book that you recommend. One question: both you and the book mentioned how important it is to mix colors with the same temperature to get a bright, saturated new color. But here I see you creating very vibrant saturated colors using only three colors. I’m confused because pairing these color up I assume there is bound to be at least one pair that is of opposite temperature.
@zoehongteaches
@zoehongteaches 6 жыл бұрын
The whole point of this video is to show you can paint any color with these 3 (plus black and white). The mixing other colors thing is about how to handle what other colors you have in your paint kit, how to choose one paint over another when mixing colors, why some colors look weird, and why mixing using CMYK is so much better than mixing Red Yellow Blue.

I've been using watercolor for a little over a year now and started off totally overwhelmed thinking I needed a zillion colors.... I HAVE a zillion colors, but for every piece I eventually realized that it's best to stick to like four or five colors for the whole thing so you one, don't get overwhelmed and freeze from color picking overload and two..... To make the piece more cohesive. Eventually, using a minimal palette totally made sense to me and mini travel palettes are now my best friend. A couple of months ago, I thought about trying to experiment with marker art like I used to a million years ago in high school, but immediately realized that it would be INSANE trying to get all the colors and tones I'd need! I'm sure there are ways to make the usability of your markers stretch.... But after being spoiled by the mixing capabilities of paint? There's just no comparison. Anyway, that's all to say that I appreciate this video and totally agree with it all!
@zoehongteaches

I think that's why companies are getting into the "pigment marker" or "watercolor marker" game, because people enjoy the mixability of paint and the overall efficiency of markers. I still haven't found one that really nails it, but I'm having fun testing out these products!
@MeowMeowKapow
@MeowMeowKapow 7 жыл бұрын
Zoe Hong yeah, I really don't understand the pigment markers, because they're still limited by the functionality of actual markers, regardless of what pigments are inside. I think the water-soluble crayons and pencils make slightly more sense for what they're aiming towards, and the watercolor sticks aren't really great or convenient for drawing but are certainly great for painting or mixing. Maybe we're on the cusp of a new medium being created?

I'm beginner to painting using oils. however I think you picked the best three primaries. but I have problems with oranges, they seem hard to mix and on your color wheel also a small portion is orange, like 10 degrees out of 360. should I use an orange tube? cuz even with split primaries of cad yellow light and cad red deep I'm still not satisfied. the cad yellow deep which itself is orangish and cad red work fine together however they're not good for split palette I think. thanks for your attention. 😊

The design process I lecture in my videos is the same process whether you're doing gowns or sneakers, whether it's a very simple concept or very complex. You practice the same process over and over again until you become very fast at it. When you work in the industry, it's still the same process, just very fast. Concept, colors, fabric, shapes, working out design details, first patterns, fitting, figuring out more 3D logistics, final samples.

1. nope u aren't annoying teacher I love you ❤❤ 2. can you please! please! teach us how to use water color? m really bad with water color because I've been using poster color since last 2 years and I dnt like my work being dirty and when I try water color that's what happens dirty assignment bt when I mix water color with poster color the effect goes away and it's much of poster color and water color combo and I love it!

Go look in my Fundamentals Friday playlist and start with my Shading with Watercolor video. And all my rendering videos feature a way to do things with watercolor.

A teeny bit of vaseline around the cap will keep it from getting stuck.

That doesn't affect the paint when things accidentally get all on top of each other?

Thank you Zoe for another helpful video! I have a watercolor pan set that I find problematic to get vibrant colors because its too watery and everything gets worst when mix colors because you need to put water and scrub your brush harder in pan to get a more opaque color that its still watery. To get a fair amount of a specific color (skintones) I had a lot of work mixing a lot of colors (my pallete its limited) for something thats still translucent. So I decided move on to paints and now I see so much difference! Its beautiful and less time consuming task and I get opaque or watery easily! I will try to replicate those effects in Photoshop and see what I'll get! premierart.com.au/image/cache/data/PW/PW715-500x500.jpg Its beautiful for ethereal and simple art that dont require a lots of shades or mixing colors but for me doesn't work at all

Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of the pan watercolors for the kind of work that I do. I'm not a watercolor artist, it's important to me to be able to mix larger quantities of a very specific color so tube paints are my preference.

I still come back to this video. Oddly enough I needed to figure out what colors to get to match the pansexual flag and those colors look suspiciously like the CMY colors and Zoe is even using the same windsor and newton cotman colors that I'm using. I've been learning a lot more about color theory and mixing colors in the last year. There's still a lot of good information in this video and I like coming back to watch it again.
