In this video, I will be sharing with you a concept that I invented to compose with colors based on chroma. It will help you realize that if you harmonize colors well based on chroma, you can associate any given hue, even those you think don’t go very well together.

I am an artist living and working in France. Here’s an exercise to help understand how much light, medium and dark percentages effect a composition: Start with rectangle 3in x 5in, within the rectangle start by dividing the space with a horizontal space(below or above the center). Then in one of those sections, divide that into two shapes again(unequally), now you have three. Now in those three shapes have dark, middle and light values(allocate one section for each). Create another identical rectangle with different sections and then a third one and compare all three with dark middle and light values to understand what different values do to a composition.

One experiment that's a bit of fun is to do a study where your light dark values and saturation are correct, but make the hues completely different from your source. It forces you to address saturation and value without worrying about exact color. It can give some good abstraction, too.

Maybe I just have a sweet tooth, but I’ve always loved a lot of abstract expressionist & psychedelic art that is overwhelmingly dominated with saturated colors (in some cases even every color of the rainbow). Although, I will admit, my absolute favorite color scheme is probably something like that, but with the saturated rainbow colors counterbalanced by a deep black, so I suppose even with a bunch of very saturated colors dominating a piece, that low chroma counterweight does add a very pleasing contrast & balance. However, I do think it provides an example of how color palettes can be designed that don’t obey this 60-30-10 rule or the mostly low chroma with only 1 or 2 higher chroma colors guidelines. This stuff was all very useful to think about for more realistic/representational art though.

Hi Florent, thank you for this video !! I just have one question, can we use any color as long as the chroma, value are correct ? For exemple, in some portraits I have seen, Green (medium-low chroma) is used. Is it just for kind of transition ? (In my case is between thé very beginning of the hair and the "end" of the skin part- Without the painting it can be complicated to imagine).

In the a couple of the paintings you analyze you don't mention the importance of the skin color areas on the "tonic" section. The high value skin tones help create a compound tonic that is a chord made up of multiple notes ie. red plus flesh color, or light blue plus skin color etc.

Well I’m color blind so my approach to using color is to throw a ton of saturated, bright colors on the canvas and then hope for the best :)

For good color harmony ....one color should dominate the space...a second one should take up less space and the third.....which takes up the least space....will be the star...the accent in the centre of intrest... Colors are like personal friends....and we need to know them well....the more we work with them...the more familiar they become... Eventually....we find some we like better than others and more comfortable to be around. .. There are a limitless combinations of colors....and they all have merit...but...if we find our own personal group with occasional variations they will become as important as our signature.

I have questions. In most of the pictures you showed us tonal color as the ones that make up the primary subject stand out. The accent colors are almost used to harmonize the paintings or create a triangle in the composition. At 7:15 you describe the sun as being the accent since it's just a touch of color in the space. But unlike the other pictures the sun is also the focal point. Does that mean the it's also the tonal, since the sun is the first thing that draws the eye in? Or would you describe the dark ships as the tonal or even the seas reflection? Also Can the tonal and accent colors be dark or dull assuming the background is then highly saturated? Thank you for posting this. I have been struggling with color for so long, my art is eather full of conflicting contrasts that are unreadable or everything is muted, flat making my subject indistinguishable from the background. I really appreciate this video and will try to keep these concepts in mind when I'm working on my art projects.

5:58. When something is used in a dominant way, in this case an overall cool or warm temperature...the lesser used complement becomes the focal point and the dominant complement becomes a background for it. Majority does not rule!!

Choosing colors....consider the simplicity of the musical scale...and the complex arrangements that can be made from notes...like musical notes... colors can be raised.. augmented...and combined in thousands of ways ... Experiment...find..your palette of hues....your musical notes....

I have many difficulties with color and I appreciate this type of content is very helpful. I have a doubt, how did painters like Matisse use so many saturated colors and achieve a balance? I find it hard to understand why the method you give is correct but seeing the variety of ways to use color I feel that it is reductionist.

The one thing I haven't seen in regards to color theory, palettes, mixing, ect., is the importance of "value," including keys, variance & mid-tones (luminance). * It does not matter how good or not a compositions color is, if it's values aren't correct. * In this regard, I think that when you discuss color theory, color harmony, ect., value should be discussed first (yes, including before you even argue which color wheel is best). * Just my opinion. I almost never paint with bright, saturated hues like that, dye-based colors. I paint almost entirely with earth tones and then add in the metal-based pigments, like real Naples yellow, for brighter, stronger hues. Of course, I paint mostly wildlife and nature paintings anyway.
