@ beginner artists: The tips here are extremely helpful. Definitly take them into consideration! But remember, tips aren't absolute *laws* If you like neon colors, use neon colors! If you like to shade with black, go for it! Like the airbrush? Airbrush! These things look ameture when theyre sloppy and poorly thought out. but with *practice, thought, and balance,* it can be something cool!

@lianasmith3161 Жыл бұрын
That's kind of funny because I have a character whose skin color in royal blue. And also good job for learning how to saturate the colors. :) I haven't yet tried to really saturate a whole lot of colors. I got the basics down, but that's about it. With time and effort I will learn. ^^ Anyways, great job. :D
@sheppin_6 жыл бұрын
Tips for people who like neon colors: If you want to use them then go ahead. But a good compromise between soft and neon is to make a pastel character and then add neon as an accent color of sorts. Maybe make the eyes neon or the earrings or something. Using bright colors in small amounts can be eye catching but using them in large amounts, while looking unpleasing, can also be nauseating so keep that in mind aswell.
@lambybunny71734 жыл бұрын
There is a subset of art called eyestrain art that uses a small number of neon colors and uses them for the whole drawing, though. So if you like neon colors you can do that too.

if you want to learn lighting, don't practice it with colors. it won't help. practice with black and white alone. use gray as your main color. and try to create a simple 3D object. like a ball or a cube. start from the basics. but you can't use fully white or fully black. cause this type of lighting rarely exist in real life. once you learn that look at color theory. and try to create a harmony or emotion using nothing bit color. play around with it. and than you should be able to draw it.

@d00dle318 жыл бұрын
Eh, don't worry about it. I just had to look it up, since I didn't know what it was either. Basically, it's shading without any distinguishable light-source. So, the outline of the entire object is shaded, while the center is highlighted (the end result looks somewhat like a circular gradient). A quick google search for 'pillow shading' will help clear things up.

Leah'sCrappy ArtShow Wrong, if you are skilled enough you can mix the color pencils to get other colors or at least give the general idea that they are diffrent colors
@vikshere6 жыл бұрын
+Matt Scashtodraw yeah but most younger artists dont have that skill. theyre beginners, so blending isnt always something that comes to mind. plus most color schemes are set. color pencils like crayola and such are readily available to young artists and they often come with very vibrant, saturated colors. i remember being young and pushing hard against the paper with a pencil of crayon to make the colors really pop. i never thought of desaturating anything until i had more experience.

If you don't mind me adding; an additional tip for painterly shading is to know what type of shadow you're making; if you're drawing, say, a ball on a table, the shadow that it casts on the table will have a hard edge, whereas the shading on the ball where it slowly turns away from the light will be softer; this helps define the shape of the form!
@d00dle318 жыл бұрын
I think that's some pretty solid advice. When it comes to shading, I tend to overlook small details like that.

i usually do the soft shading. i never really tried the hard shading
@rainbowsparkwarrior58 жыл бұрын
Caitlin Brendon I only do hard shading, because I animate and soft shading is so hard to keep consistent. I do soft shading if I'm just illustrating, but never when I'm doing an animation. I usually don't even shade at all on animations.

An art style is something you earn, not something you automatically get. Only once you've mastered (or nearly) the basics, for example, the principles of art, have you actually started on a path towards an art style. So saying coloring like the right is your style isn't valid. It clumsily breaks the 'rules' of art rather than modifying them or skillfully bending them. Being an 'art style' is not an excuse for sloppy composition. And if coloring however you please is fine, then what's the merit in being a professional?

A good cure for using the super bright colors - search for a photo of a sky with colors that seem very vibrant to you. Orange, blue, whatever. Load it in Photoshop. Take the color picker and use it on the most vibrant parts in the picture. See what color you get. Is it the most saturated and brightest orange/blue? No, most likely not. It's often in the middle of the palette, often very far to the left (less saturated) and bordering on grey. Still it LOOKS very orange/blue. Take a while to think about why this is. Read about color theory and how you make colors pop with other colors. Practice this.

The reason red and green are an annoying or distracting color combination is because of something called "Reverberation". It's basically where when two high contrast colors are placed next to each other, they start to mess with the eye and look as if they are vibrating and/or mixing together! Pretty cool being an art student haha
@mattscashtodraw99956 жыл бұрын
Poppy, this is only when you use the colors wrong. For example by using the same amount of red as green or by not using the right saturation. They actually go great together when used right, since they are complementary colors.

I'm just gonna say this so people are less confused when coloring. The right way to nice looking colors isn't over using pastels but it's all about complementaries. Believe it or not but choosing your back ground color is the first thing you need to do. Now you will find what you would usually color with but adjust it scording to how close it is to the background color on the color wheel. After that your colors should fit well together and look real to life rather than just "pastel" or "over saturated"

they are both good, but there's a few things. 1). People can shade with black if they want to, as long at it's more light in the color. 2). The shimmer on the hair, can be used both ways. 3). They can use the burning tool, they can just layer another layer of the color over, and it wont seem that bright. 4). The eyes' shimmer is okay, it gives more of an effect. 5). And at last... The colors can be ''too'' bright, and can maybe not give the effect of a darker aura. sorry if i offended anyone, i just think these needed to be pointed out...

using a black shading can be a good thing *IF* you try to bring the life out of something so like a skeleton in a dark dungeon, right?
@doukzu8 жыл бұрын
it definitely can, although using a dark purple or blue is still probably a good choice for that :0
@Matthimeo8 жыл бұрын
Ima Play Games yes and no, usually solid black is never used in anything but cell shading, and when it is used it is never with the default airbrush
@a_arrow8 жыл бұрын
When looking at how light actually works, the shading is pretty much never black unless you are in space (in which case, black would actually be a good choice, if done correctly) So with the dark dungeon setup, it's probably going to be more purple/blue/red depending on the specific setting and mood. I think black can also be a good shadow color for a more stylized approach (see: Mike Mignola)/Film Noir type feel, but the video's suggestion that black is never a good shadow color is pretty accurate for shading with any level of realism, and a lot of beginning artists use black in a way that shows their lack of understanding of color more than anything else.
@juantamad988 жыл бұрын
