Another weakness a lot of artists have are color values. You have picked colors, but if you turn the image gray, you can see that everything is the same value which makes the drawing very flat. You might also wanna check your values now and then, Towne.

Character design tip I do: When I make a character, I start with a defining feature. Ex: If I can't figure out clothing, I'll move on to hair. How can the hair define them? Then I'll conclude: oh, they have neat pigtails, it gives a cutesy vibe so I'll go with kawaii themed clothes!. Hope it makes sense and helps

About the flipping canvas thing. Im not a digitalist, I'm primarily traditional, so flipping my sketchpaper/canvas isn't an option for me, but one tactic I do use is taking a picture of my drawing and flipping the image, it really helps to see the smaller flaws that my eye cant really pick out sometimes. Another method Is just, holding the picture in front of a mirror, i use this more often, it works the same way, and I'm usually closer to my mirror than my phone.

Also, anyone else out there suffer from mountains of ideas and inspiration but extreme lack of motivation to actually finish said ideas/make them as intricate and detailed as you wanted?

one thing ive noticed that has helped me with anatomy and proportions is taking old vogue issues, and breaking down the models into basic drawing skeletons (shapes and lines, etc) of course, since vogue is more focused on "the ideal female body type TM", I make it a point try to look up refs for other body types (and genders lmao) so I can learn more than just that body type.

The big thing I have trouble with: Coloring. I’m more of a traditional artist, and my main utensils are pens and watercolor pencils. The only problem is that I have trouble shading, and making the picture eye-catching and vibrant. If you wanna see an example of this, look at my profile picture. Even if it’s changed, I have sworn to draw my pfp so that I have a unique image that represents my style. Any advice for this?
@c4creativecorner513
@c4creativecorner513 3 жыл бұрын
Coloring? Yeah me too. But a way to make it vibrant is to press hard on a color pencil and keep doing it to make it bright and vibrant. U can also trace it with sharpie. It will make it pop out! But... u might need to sharpen ur pencil ALOT. So I use markers (I don’t recommend it though)

Two things you missed out. (1) When someone asked if you can draw them. I started a couple days ago looking at anime characters and drawing them on paper and my friends are all w8eebs I was surprized at myself and I've already had a request to draw someone as well as some of my friends wanting copies and I've only been drawing a couple days and it gets really stressy. (2) When one part of the drawing doesn't look the same as in the photo. Most people would leave it but I'm staring at it for ages fighting temptations to fix it and I give in and since I like to draw on paper and the paper almost rips AND IT STILL DOESN'T LOOK RIGHTTTTTTTTTTTTTT! *side note I like to draw anime not realistic stuff*

Oh- oof I know how you feel. I felt like that when I first started (I still feel like that sometimes). When drawing from a reference and it doesn’t look right I’d recommend just taking a break from your drawing. Like when you hit a trouble area and you feel “oh no I’m gonna have so much trouble with this” take a break it’s a good way to freshen your brain and try to not be super strict with yourself it’s okay if it doesn’t look right. With the having people wanting to draw you problem you either say “okay that’ll be 5 bucks” they usually leave you alone after that (and if they don’t leave you alone you can just be persistent and they’ll leave eventually and if your lucky you might end up with 5 bucks) If it’s a friend and you don’t wanna hurt their feelings say “I’m sorry it’s kinda overwhelming if I take requests from everyone so I’m trying to limit the amount of people I’m gonna draw” if they are a good friend they should understand that art can be hard and time consuming

Make sure they don’t look like the one from the page before. I also like to loosely base my character’s clothing off of clothing I’ve seen on other characters on people I know or sometimes clothing I have(often cool pieces of clothing I have but don’t wear all that much because they need to be worn for particular occasions.)
