I took this exact route 32 years ago and fell in love with Handies. Your video brought back a flood of memories of a great day spent in the San Juans. Thanks!

The hike back down is beautiful. This route is so much better than coming from American Basin.

Another good beginners route with a couple of good short side hikes . Use the same trail head for redcloud and sunshine and a couple of high 13ers .

What an incredible hike!! I can’t wait to be able to get up and do this now that I know that can drive to trailhead as I have seen comments that you need a high clearance vehicle to get to it . What amazing views !!

Your videos are fantastic! For those without 4x4, where could a regular sedan park and then hike to the TH in summer? Thank you.

Check out my website linked in the description of the video - I talk all about the drive in.

amazing video. I was wondering if you think Wetterhorn peak would be a good first class 3?
@TheVirtualsherpa4 жыл бұрын
Merin Ingalls one of my favorites, a solid choice if you are okay with route finding and exposure.

Great videos man, thanks for all your good work! I was wondering if you’ve done handies in winter and if so if you have any tips?
@TheVirtualsherpa3 жыл бұрын
Haven’t done it in the winter - loaded with avi risk and a long ass approach with road closures. If you can snag it - just prepare for long day / overnight and make sure snow is stable.

Great video. You said you were hiking redcloud and sunshine the day after that, me and my dad hiking redcloud and sunshine in about four weeks, I was just wondering if the video would be out by then? Also me and my dad are thinking about hiking snowmass as are first class 3, do you think that would be a good one?
@TheVirtualsherpa4 жыл бұрын
Dara McKinley video should be out in 2 weeks for that 👍🏽 If you guys are okay with very long mileage it’s a fine one but if you want something shorter check out mt Lindsey

snowmass is really pretty but the boulders are endless, and the exposure was too much for me

Is the trail conditions with the rock near the summit better or worse than Sherman & Bierstadt?
@TheVirtualsherpa4 жыл бұрын
Percy White Music probably pretty similar to Sherman but worse than Bierstadt. It’s not horrible, just very steep but it’s such a small section.

I am headed to do Redcloud and Handies next week. Is there somewhere at the trailhead that I could hang my hammock to sleep in?
@TheVirtualsherpa4 жыл бұрын
For sure - loads of camping near the trailhead and along the forest road. I talk more about it in the full trail guide which is linked in the description.

The Virtual Sherpa Are there some decent trees to hang a hammock from?
@TheVirtualsherpa4 жыл бұрын
I didn’t use a hammock so I can’t speak for a specific tree but yes, there are trees in the area.

American basin so long as your car can get up there

How far in can you go from the trial head to set up and camp
@beccakreidler82904 жыл бұрын
It looks like they set up a base camp in some dispersed camping along the road to the TH. If you want to backpack in you should be 1/4 mile in from the TH/road. And, for LNT, it's polite to be 200 ft off trail/out of sight.
